Generally, grandparents’ love for their grandkids is much more in a way than the love for their own children when they were young. They even wouldn’t like to say any serious words to their grandkids. That’s perhaps because they are becoming old and value life much more. But a new survey shows that they spend totally as much as 7 billion pounds at Christmas on presents and entertaining.

The average grandparent spends nearly 600 pounds during the festive season, with 6.5 million grandparents also hosting Christmas dinner, according to insurer Norwich Union.

Unsurprisingly, grandchildren are the main beneficiaries(受益者)of this spending at Christmas.Grandparents spend an average of 58 pounds on presents for each grandchild.Four out of ten grandparents say they treat their lucky grandkids all year round, spending an average of 200 pounds per grandchild during the year, while 41% admit they spend more on their grandchildren than they do on their children.

Daren Carter from Norwich Union Personal Finance, said,"They say that Christmas is a time for giving and our grandparents seem to have enjoyed it.However, all this generosity does come at a cost.A third of grandparents admit that they would buy things for their grandchildren even when they can’t afford to do so.Considering that the average weekly income of almost a third of grandparents is less than 300 pounds per household,it may be that this kindness isn’t acceptable."

When my friends went to college in great delight,I restarted my senior high school life.My spirit sank.Surrounded by strange classmates,I felt like I was in a maze and was sorry about myself. There were some complex feelings in my mind.I was frightened, nervous and lonely.

To make matters worse,I recalled my failure again and again, which put more pressure on me than I could bear.As a result,I was always feeling down during class time.

My teacher found me spiritless. One day he asked me to come to his office and told me about his attitude towards life:We might suffer from mistakes, but it’s important to learn lessons from them. All the pains and the embarrassing things we experience are part of the process. So keep up your spirit! At last,he added,"If you are optimistic, things you want may happen to you!"

Warmth rushed through my soul.I suddenly found the sun shining again when I stepped out of his office.

With the teacher’s help,I eventually got over my depression. From then on,I no longer bowed my head and began smiling to my classmates.I would put up my hand confidently in class and play with my new friends in my spare time.Meanwhile,I was gradually embraced by my classmates.

Now faced with fierce competition,we all study strenuously, and every second counts. Moreover, there is an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect between us.I love my class;I love my classmates!

To tell the truth,I still have a thirst for my dream university, but I’m not afraid of failure because I can profit by it.With parents and teachers' great expectation,I’m quite certain of my success and I’m sure I can fly high..

In Britain today,is it possible to tell a person’s class just by looking at him? Physical details alone tell us about health, diet and type of work a person does.A hundred years ago the working class often looked unhealthy, small and they were either too thin or too fat.The.upper classes were often tall, sporting types who were used to a good diet and looked healthy.Today living and working conditions have improved, and such descriptions are no longer true.People are taller now than a hundred years ago.Everyone in Britain today is able to have free medicine,a good diet, acceptable working conditions and enough rest and leisure.

The clothes people choose to wear, however,do provide information about their backgrounds.Expensive clothes look expensive and show their wearer is rich.Clothes can provide other clues(线索) as well. The upper classes appear to be less interested in fashion and wear good quality clothes in non-bright colors, made of natural material like wool, leather and cotton.Lower working--class people often choose clothes in bright colors, made of man--made materials.A sociological explanation for this would be that color and interest are missing from their lives, and therefore, any opportunity to produce this is taken.

Clothes are available at a price within most people’s reach.New clothes make the wearer feel good

and show some degree of wealth to the outside world.Today it is the younger people who spend most money on clothes.Fashion is no longer for the upper classes and the rich.Young people from all social classes spend a lot of money on clothes. Some new fashions are started by working--class people who want to look different and feel important. They want people to look at them.

1.In the past,a person’s appearance could not tell other people about his

A.health              B.diet                 C.occupation         D.habits

2.The clothes people choose to wear tell us about their

A.education          B.richness             C.backgrounds       D.hobby

3.A working--class person may start a new fashion because_______.

A.he wants to draw the attention of other people

B.he wants to look different and healthy

C.he wants to show his wealth

D.he wants to show his taste

4.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.Expensive clothes look expensive and show the wearer is rich.

B.Working--class people prefer clothes in bright colors because they lack color in their lives.

C.Today,it is still the upper--class people who spend most money on clothes.

D.Today, fashion is no longer for the upper classes and the rich.

Brazil’s next super star

Rom Ronaldo and Ronaldinho to Kaka and Robinho,Brazil is never short of football stars. If you have ever wondered who could be the next big name,18--year--old Alexandre Polo is a player to watch.

The teenage striker scored the only goal of the game on March 20 to help AC Milan beat Torino 10.The win ensured Milan can still maintain their push for a Champions League spot despite the absence of star playmaker Kaka.

Pato made his start in Serie A only in January and has scored seven goals for his club so far.He also helped Brazil’s national football team win the 2007 South American Youth Championship, qualifying the country for the football competition at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Pato is good at controlling football and moves intelligently. But most of all,he is quick.Looking at him play,it becomes evident why many people have connected him with a young Ronaldo.Yet Pato insist that the praise does not put him under pressure.Instead,he welcomes it."I was happy to listen to people saying I was a great player. It makes me want to do my best”

Pato started to play indoor football at the age of three. At only 11, he signed with the Brazilian football club International where he started sharing a house with 83 other teenagers.Much like him, they wanted to make a name for themselves in the club’s senior team.

Luckily,Pato was the one who quickly made his way to the senior team and landed in AC Milan at the end of 2007.

Was it easy for him to settle down in a totally different culture? Pato insists that he has settled in with no problems thanks largely to his compatriots (同胞) in the Italian league."These are the players I played with on Playstation and watched on television," he admitted."My dream of playing with my idol Ronaldo has finally come true."
