YUSHU,Qinghai,May 5 (Xinhua)—Chinese authorities are working to protect the quake survivors in northwestern province of Qinghai from potential secondary disasters.

The government has provided sufficient food, drinking water and tents for more than 200,000 quake survivors, but landslides, floods and disease outbreaks may still threaten their lives.

The magnitude 7.1 quake has killed at least 2,220 people, with 70 still missing and more than 12,000 injured.

Recent rain has raised the risk of landslides as the devastating quake and aftershocks has destabilized mountain slopes. The rainy season starting in late May or early June will make the situation worse.

A total of 139 survivors were evacuated to safety 7 km away from their make-shift homes in Changu Village of the quake-hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Region early Tuesday morning as rain-triggered landslides threatening their safety.

“It's still an arduous (艰难)task to prevent and guard against secondary disasters,”said Wang Jianbin, deputy director of the Qinghai provincial land and resources bureau.

In the hardest-hit Gyegu Township where 85 percent of the buildings collapsed, potential secondary disasters in 10 areas posed threats to the safety of 1,924 residents,Wang said citing an initial survey.

“How did you do it,Dad? How have you managed to not take a drink for almost 20 years?” It took me almost 20 years to have the courage to even ask my father this very personal question. When Dad first quit drinking, the whole family was on pins and needles every time he got into a situation that,in the past, would have started him drinking again. For a few years we were afraid to bring it up for fear the drinking would begin again.

“I had this little poem that I would recite to myself at least four to five times a day,”was Dad’s reply to my l8-year-old unasked question.”The words were an instant relief and constant reminder to me that things were never so tough that I could not handle them,”Dad said. And then he shared the poem with me.The poem’s simple, yet profound words immediately became part of my daily routine as well.

About a month after this talk with my father,I received a gift in the mail from a friend of   mine.It was a book of daily affirmations with one affirmation listed for each day of the year.

It has been my experience that when you get something with days of the year on it,you   automatically turn to the page that lists your own birthday.

I hurriedly opened the book to November 10 to see what words of wisdom this book had in store for me.I did a double-take and tears of disbelief and appreciation rolled down my face. There,on my birthday, was the exact same poem that had helped my father for all these years! It is called the Serenity Prayer(宁静之祷).

Eating nuts may help lower cholesterol(胆固醇) levels,US research suggests.

The review of 25 studies, involving nearly 600 people, showed eating on average 67g of Nuts-a small bag-a day reduced cholesterol levels by 7.4%.

The US Loma Linda University team believes nuts may help prevent the absorption of cholesterol.

UK experts said the research showed nuts were an important part of a healthy diet, but warned against eating nuts covered in sugar or salt.

Previous work has indicated eating nuts regularly is beneficial, but the Archives of Internal Medicine study set out to put an accurate figure on the effect.

The people involved ate 67g of nuts a day on average, over a period of three to eight weeks.

As well as improving cholesterol levels,it also reduced the amount of triglyceride,a type of blood fat that has been linked to heart disease.

Howeverthe impact was least pronounced among the overweight

It is not yet dear why nuts have this effect, although one suggestion is that it is down to the plant sterols they contain, which are thought to interfere with cholesterol absorption.

Lead researcher,Joan Sabate said increasing nut consumption as part of a healthy diet should be recommended.

He added:“The effects of nut consumption were dose related, and different types of nuts had similar effects.”

Ellen Mason, senior Cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, agreed, but she urged people to go for unsalted nuts.

“Apart from salted peanuts at the pub, nuts in sugary cereals or the traditional Christmas selection, nuts have been largely lacking in our diets in the UK,”she added.

The study was carried out by independent researchers, although it was partly funded by the International Tree Nut Council Nutrition Research and Education Foundation.

Absolute poverty is a condition where people lack the provision of basic human needs, including food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities(卫生设施),health, shelter, education and information. In 1990 about 2 billion people were living on 2 US dollars a day or less.In 2000 the UN estimated that 3 billion people were living on that poverty level or below, which is approximately half of the world’s population.

The wealthiest 20% of the world’s people use 58% of the world’s energy and consume 45% of all meat and fish. They own 87% of the world’s vehicles and have access to 74% of all telephone lines.

Public and private spending on health care average about $2,000 per person in Finland and $3 in Vietnam.

An additional $6 billion a year would be needed to achieve universal basic education--- about $2 billion less than what is currently spent in the USA alone on cosmetics(化妆品).

An additional $13 billion a year would be needed to ensure basic health and nutrition for all---only a small part of the amount spent in Europe on cigarettes ($50 billion) or alcoholic drinks ($105 billion).

An additional $9 billion a year would be required to provide clean water and sanitation worldwide. That is about half the money currently spent on pet food in Europe and the USA.

Do you know that shortly after hearing something, most of us can recall only 50% of the original message.Within two to eight weeks,we can recall only 25% or less of the original message. Our mental attitudes reduce our ability to retain what we hear.

Some suggestions to being a good listener are mentioned below.

First of all, stop tailing----you can’t listen while you are tailing.

Ask questions when you don’t understand, when you need further clarification, when you want them to like you and when you want to show that you are listening.

Don't interrupt----give them time to say what they have to say.

Concentrate on what they are saying----actively focus your attention on their words, their ideas and their feelings as they relate to the subject.

Look at the speakers----by looking,it gives them confidence that you are, in fact, listening. It helps you to concentrate too.

__________----try to forget your own worries and problems. Leave them outside of the meeting room. They will prevent you from listening well.

Understand the main points----concentrate on the main ideas and not the illustrative material.

Use the difference in rate----you can listen faster than you can talk. So use this rate difference to your advantage by staying on the right track, anticipating what they are going to say, thinking back over what they have just said and evaluating the development of their argument. You speak at about 100 to 150 words per minute, but you think at 250 to 500.

Learn to listen and you will achieve a great success in your life.
