Dear editor,

Recently, Ministry of Education has announced to add Peking Opera as a compulsory course in primary and secondary schools. My classmates held a discussion on it the other day.

According to the discussion, there are two different opinions. _____________________

Yours sincerely,

                                                            A student from Class 5

A few days ago, Adrian bought six packages of ink for his printer at a $1 Store. Then he found a deal on better ink at the local computer store. So Adrian went back to the $1 Store to exchange the ink for some other items.

He put the ink into a plastic bag and tied it up. When he entered the store, he immediately showed the bag to a clerk and told her that he was returning some items. She looked at him but said nothing, so Adrian put the bag into a push-cart and started shopping.

He was midway through shopping when a female employee suddenly stopped him. “Sir,” she said sternly(严厉地), “you are not allowed to carry a plastic bag of items around in this store.”

Adrian was taken back. There was no need for her to yell. He opened the bag and showed her the six packages of ink. “I’m exchanging these for some other items,” Adrian said.

“You should have left the bag with the clerk when you entered the store. Let me see your receipt!” the employee demanded. Adrian was embarrassed. He felt like a shoplifter while he showed her the receipt.

By the time Adrian had finished shopping and exchanged the items, he was angry and asked what her name was. She mumbled something and he heard “Ursula.”

When Adrian got home, he called the store’s corporate headquarters. Two days later, Adrian received a phone call from a representative. “I’m sorry,” she said, “but there’s no one at that store named Ursula. Can you describe her? I’ll find out who she is. I assure you, we do not tolerate rude behavior, nor do we tolerate lying to customers.”

By this time, Adrian had calmed down. He didn’t really want the employee to lose her job. He told the representative to forget about it.

American TV and movies once gave a tough and cruel picture of the American police, though now there are TV series which have cops as heroes and defenders of society. The police are grateful for the good publicity and their new image, especially in cities where there are black Jews, who live under poverty line. White policemen are now careful of how they speak and act towards their fellow black citizens.

The cop is a city or a State employee. He cannot arrest anyone outside his city or his State. He cannot even cross the border into a neighbor State in search of a criminal. If he does, he can be charged with breaking the law of that State. The police who have to be really tough are those who operate in big cities, like New York,Chicago and Detroit, which have large ghettos(贫民窟) and organized crimes.

Since the majority of criminals are armed, American cops have to use their guns more often than most policemen in other places and the car chases through the crowded streets of Manhattan, which are a favorite feature of gangster movie, are not so exaggerated(夸张的). American cops get shot down, run over, stabbed, beaten up, and their wives are in constant fear that one day their men will not come home.

Many policemen do a lot to help children whose parents are criminals. They understand better than most citizens the terrible misery of the Jews. They feel sorry for the drug addicts, but often treat roughly the “pushers” who sell the drugs―when they can catch them. They have been accused of making no serious attempt to break up the various drug rings. They say that such task would be never-ending.

Thank-you cards ― heartfelt expressions of gratitude for gifts, services and general kindness ― seem to be rare in an age when the Internet continues to reduce human touch.

Although our society has changed greatly over the past century, the etiquette of thank-you notes has not.

While most people would agree that thank-you notes under these conditions are a necessity, there are still those who forever delay or are forgetful for unknown reasons.

And at no time of the year are thank-you notes more visible (or lacking) than June, the month of graduations, and the beginning of summer parties.

“ It' s a must-do thing. A real ' thank you' does not come by e-mail. It comes in the mail in an envelope. And what comes out of an envelope is a beautiful thing to touch and to handle and to pass around for everyone to read, ”said etiquette expert Letitia Baldrige.

Don't think for a second that Baldrige is old-fashioned. Handwritten thank-you notes ― any handwritten letter, for that matter ― have taken on an air of extra importance in this e-hyper (电子狂躁的) world.

Baldrige remains hopeful that the art may be enjoying a renaissance(复兴).

More than simply obeying rules of etiquette, thank-you cards are a sign of caring.

“They are more important now than ever,”expert Peter Post says. “You are building a relationship. And part of building that relationship is that you recognize it when someone has done something nice for you.”

“The payoff, ”Post says, “can be huge. The more we do it, the more it comes back to us, and it's a benefit to us all. It makes our world a little bit nicer place to live in.”

56.   Nowadays thank-you cards seem to be rare mainly because _____.

A. People think that they are out of fashion

B. It is cheaper to say thanks by e-mail

C. The Internet has reduced our chances of getting together

D. People are too busy to remember these things

57.   From the context, the underlined word “etiquette”in the second paragraph probably means______.

A.old objects for sale                  B. rules for people to obey

C. hand-made articles                 D. customs for polite behavior

58.   The author implies in this article that ________.

A. old-fashioned people don’t use e-mails

B. the changing society is making people impolite and lazy

C. modern technology is driving people apart

D. the e-hyper world is not a nice place to live in

59.   What is the author's main purpose of writing this article?

A. To remind people to express heartfelt thanks.

B. To criticize people's forgetfulness.

C. To suggest building a new relationship.

D. To emphasize the importance of e-mail.
