Geoffery Payne talked for the first time about the night when his wife was killed. The judge thought it was he who killed his wife. Now he wrote to a magazine from the prison about what had happened on the night of 13 October, 2007.

I had to stay late at the hospital that night to do an operation. I finally left at about 11 p.m. I drove home slowly because the weather was terrible- the wind was blowing and it was raining heavily. I was turning into our road when a man suddenly ran in front of my car. I almost hit him but I stopped just in time. I was frightened and the man looked frightened, too. I got out of the car but he ran away before I could ask if he was all right. It was strange.

When I got home, the lights were on but it was very quiet. I called to my wife but there was no answer. Then I remembered that she was out at a concert.

I was still very upset about what had happened on the road, so I made myself a drink. Then I went upstairs to have a bath. I saw that the window in the bedroom was open. This was strange because my wife always locked the doors and windows before she went out. She was afraid of burglars (夜盗者). When I went to close the window, I found Ellen. She was lying on the floor. There was blood everywhere. I rushed over and felt her pulse but she was dead. I sat on the floor beside her body. I was too frightened to do anything.

When I gained a bit of consciousness, the sky was getting light. I couldn't remember a thing about the night. In the morning I phoned the police. They arrived about half an hour after I phoned them. But it seemed like hours. During that time I tried hard to recall what had happened the night before. I couldn't stop thinking about the man on the road. What was he doing at that time of night in our quiet neighborhood? Why did he look so frightened? Why did he run away?

School was over and I was both mentally and physically tired. I sat at the very front of the bus because of anxiety to get home. Sitting at the front makes you stand out like a shiny   36   in a pile of dull pennies.

I had no reply. I was   45  . My heart ached for her. I sat on the old, smelly seat thinking of the great   46   my own mother was thrown into   47    my father died.

I saw how hard it was, and still is, for her. I wouldn’t like anyone to experience that.

Suddenly I realized Janie wasn’t only a bus driver. That was   48  her job. She had a whole    world of family and concerns too. I had never thought of her as anything   49   a driver.

At the moment I felt I was very   50  . I realized I had only thought of people as far as what their purposes were in my life. I paid no attention to Janie  51   she was a bus driver. I had judged her by her job and regarded her as  52  .

For all I know, I’m just another person in   53   else’s world, and may not even be important. I should not have been so selfish and self-centred. Everyone   54   a place to go to, people to see and appointments to  55  . Understanding people is an art.
