The average kid has a busy day. There’s school, taking care of your pets, running around with friends, going to sports for practice or other activities , and doing your homework. It’s tiring just writing them all down. By the end of the day, your body needs a break. Sleep allows your body to rest for the next day.

Everything that’s alive needs sleep to survive. Even your dog or cat curls up for naps. Animals sleep for the same reason as you do to give the body a tiny vacation.

Not only is sleep necessary for your body, it’s important for your brain, too. Though no one is exactly sure what work the brain does when you’re asleep, some scientists think that the brain sorts through and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solves problems while you snooze.

Most kids between 5 and12 get about 9.5 hours a night, but experts agree that most need 10 or 11 hours each night. Sleep is an individual thing and some kids need more than others.

When your body doesn’t have enough hours to rest, you may feel tired or cranky; or you may be unable to think clearly. You might have a hard time following directions, or you might have an argument with a friend over something really stupid . A school assignment that’s normally easy may feel impossible, or your may feel clumsy playing your favorite sport or instrument.

One more reason to get enough sleep: If you don’t you may not grow as well. That’s right, researchers believe too little sleep affect growth and you immune system-which keeps you from getting sick.

First lady Laura Bush announced that she plans to focus America’s attention on making sure that all young children are ready to read and learn when they start school and on recruiting the best and brightest to the detaching profession. She will also highlight the need for more Americans to become teachers. And she will encourage everyone, from young adults to retirees, to bring their talents, energy and enthusiasm to classrooms throughout the nation. Learning to read starts long before a child starts school, and reading skills help make children good students. Reading skills make all other skills possible, she noted.

In 1989, doctors at Boston City Hospital created a programme known as Reach Out and Read(ROR). In ROR clinics, doctors actually ‘prescribe” that parents read to their children. Volunteers in waiting rooms show parents creative ways to read to their children, and every child leaves with a new book. In 1997, Mrs. Bush helped start a ROR programme in her home state of Texas. With her support, more than 60 ROR l=clinic sites have opened in Texas. As the nation’s First Lady, she is committed to supporting ROR in communities across the country.

Finally ,Mrs Bush will encourage others to pursue teaching as a career. “As a former public school teacher and librarian, I have tremendous respect for people who teach,” she said. “Teaching is challenging, sometimes thankless, but incredibly rewarding. We need many more dedicated Americans to teach our children how to learn so that they may ultimately lead successful lives.” She will encourage America’s best and brightest college students, professionals, and military retirees to bring their talents and experiences to classrooms across the nation, especially in inner-city schools where the need is greatest.

There are two general kinds of voice lifts. In some cases, implants(植物)are inserted(插入)through an incision(切口)in the neck to bring the vocal cords(声带)closer together. Doctors also inject fat or other substances(物质)to make the cords bigger so that the voice sounds younger

“If I spoke a great deal, or I was shouting on a particular day, at the end of the day I would feel very tired,” said Robert Anzidei, 75, a retired man who had the voice lift several years ago. “I don’t know if I sound younger, but the hoarseness is gone, which is a great improvement.”
