During the Great Depression, food and money were extremely short and bartering(以物易物)was used.

One day, I was buying some early potatoes from Mr. Miller   36     I noticed a small poor boy    37    staring at a basket of green peas. To my surprise, Mr. Miller sold the boy a bag of peas―just for a marble(弹珠).

Mrs. Miller, who had been   38     nearby, came over and told me there were two other boys like him and that her husband often    39    with them for peas, tomatoes, or   40    although he didn’t need     41   any marbles. I left the stand, smiling to myself,           42  by this man.

Some time later, I moved away. One day I visited some old friends,   43   that Mr. Miller had died. I agreed to    44    them to the funeral to offer words of   45    . Ahead of us in line were three young men in dark suits. They came over to Mrs. Miller, hugged her,   46   her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on, wiping their eyes.

Our turn came. I told Mrs. Miller who I was and mentioned the story she had told me years ago. She said, “Those three young men who just left were just the boys I told you about. They told me     47  they appreciated the things Jim ‘traded’ with them. Now, they came to pay their debt.”

“We’ve never had a great deal of     48    , she added, “but right now, Jim would     49    himself to be the richest man.”

Then with loving    50     , she lifted the lifeless fingers of Miller. Resting underneath were three shiny, red    51    .

At that time I     52     that one would not be remembered by one’s    53     , but by one’s kind deeds. They say it takes a   54     to find a special person, an hour to appreciate him, a day to love him, but an entire life to   55    him.
