Two American scientists told the people in industrial nations that they would be much healthier if they ate more of the same kind of foods eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago.

The scientists say that the human body has changed very little since human first appeared on earth, but the way we live has changed greatly. Our body has not been able to deal with these changes in life style and this has led to new kinds of sicknesses. These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times. So they are called “diseases of civilization (文明)”.Many cancers and diseases of the blood system, including heart attacks and strokes(中风)are examples of such diseases.

Scientists noted that early stone-age people used very little alcohol(酒精)or tobacco, probably none.Ancient people also got a great deal of physical exercise, but a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and life today.

Stone-age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than farm animals. They also ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables, and fruits. They did not use milk and other dairy products, and they made very little use of grains. But today, we eat a large amount of dairy products and grain foods. We eat six times more salt than stone-age people. We eat more sugar. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein(蛋白质)and much less vitamin C.

People today probably do not want to live as people thousands of years ago did, but scientists say that we would be much healthier if we ate as those ancient people did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet foods.

Long bus rides are like television shows. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end with commercials(商业广告) thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. “Buy super Clean Toothpaste.” “Drink Good Wet Root Beer.” “Fill up with Pacific Gas.” Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of “You Need It Now!”

The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you’ve traveled that way before. Usually some things have changed-new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it’s fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so. If the driver is particularly reckless or daring, the ride can be as thrilling as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left-hand lane? After a while, of course, the excitement dies down. Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you’ve got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops.

The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there’s a kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat, of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. By now you’ve sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the arm rests-even with your hands crossed behind your head. The end comes just at the right time. There are just no more ways to sit.

     D. To describe the billboards along the road.

43. The writer of this passage would probably favor _____________.

     A. bus drivers who weren’t reckless

     B. driving alone

     C. a television set on the bus

     D. no billboards along the road

44. The writer feels long bus rides are like TV shows because ______________.

The American space agency opened for business on October first, 1958. NASA’s most important job was to    31 an American into space and return him safely to the earth. Project Mercury was the plan    32     doing this. It would use one of several dependable military rockets to launch a small, one-man spacecraft.    23  space vehicle would return to the earth and land in the ocean. For the first time in five decades, Taiwan buys water from the mainland of China to help soothe(缓解) a severe drought.

By WILLIAM IDE, Associated Press Writer

TAIPEI, Taiwan―Facing its worst drought in decades, Taiwan is buying water from the mainland of China   21  since the two rivals split amid civil war 54 years ago.

A Taiwanese ship on Sunday was expected   22  2,300 metric tons (2,530 short tons) of water back from the mainland of China to Taiwan’s outlying island of Matsu, just off China’s southeastern coast.

There are no direct   28  air links between the mainland of China and Taiwan’s main island, separated by   29  160―kilometer―wide  Taiwan Strait. But last year, Taiwan opened shipping links between the mainland of China and the outlying Taiwanese islands of Kinmen and Matsu―an experiment   30  links between the mainland of China of Taiwan’s main island.

It may be the season to be joyful at the time of Christmas, but a psychologist in Columbus, Ohio says as many as one person in four has a chance of holiday depression this time of year.

Dr. David Lowenstein says a lot of people “buy into the idea that the holidays should be a picture perfect, Norman Rockwell affair”, but he says that’s “unrealistic for most people”. Dr. Lowenstein says the potential is very high this time of year for psychological, physical and financial stress, so he recommends applying what he calls the “three R’s” to keep the holiday blues on the run.

First, says the doctor, be Realistic. Don’t set overly high expectations, acknowledge feelings of sadness and don’t’ repress them. Rather, seek out social support and companionship, such as through a community group or church.

Second, be Reasonable. Dr. Lowenstein says it’s best to eat and drink in moderation, rather than do more than usual just because it’s the holidays. By the way, moderation applies to money too. The doctor says a lot of people can’t spend what they’d like on gifts, or they spend more than they can afford. Either way, he says it’s depressing.

Third, get some Rest. Don’t try to do more than you can comfortably do. Watch your time, and schedule some breaks for peace and quiet. Also, share your load with someone else. Dr. Lowenstein says if you’re feeling stressed and/or overburdened, try to get relatives or friends to help take up some of your burdens.
