71   When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view.

The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels.   72  .

The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans.   73  It included such items as automobilesand new houses.

By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment.  74

One this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?

A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice.   75   In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

       A.Then a third level appeared.

       B.Human wants seem endless.

C.When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears.

E.At this stage, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure.

F.Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing.

G.Different people have different wants on each level.

Traditional media platforms such as radio, television, newspaper and the Internet still cannot satisfy people living in fast paced modern society.

The highly technical development of mobile phones also nurtures (培养) the "thumb culture" and a new alternative media.

With the aim of "putting the world in your pocket," Shanghai Dragon New Media Co Ltd has recently launched a special cell phone channel - the 5th Media, the first of its kind in China.

The channel provides all-day broadcasting of the latest metro, economic, entertainment, sports, fashion, food and travel news. Both China Unicom and China Mobile can use wireless devices to connect to the 5th Media net.

"All the programs on this channel will be specially planned and edited for cell phone users," says Wu Chunlei, general manager of Shanghai Dragon New Media Co Ltd.

Based on the programs of Shanghai Media Group, the video clips presented by the cell phone channel are more condensed(浓缩的), immediate and straightforward.

"'Infotainment' (information plus entertainment) is a core (核心的) concept for us," Wu says. "It is inevitable that the public's attraction to this new form of media will be greatly increased."

Last Wednesday, the cell phone channel presented a live broadcast of "My Hero" concert, which included performances by the winners of the star-making television show. It was the first time locals could watch a live concert on their mobile phones.

"The cell phone channel is a good supplement(补充) to traditional media," says Fan Yong, an IT worker. “But we are concerned about its price and the quality of the programs.”

Our spiritual intelligence quotient (精神智商),or SQ, helps us understand ourselves, and live fuller, happier lives.

Though we’re all born with SQ, most of us don’t even realize that we have it. Fortunately, you don’t have to sign up for classes to learn how to improve your SQ. Here are some simple steps that can lead you to this new level of understanding.

Sit Quietly. The process of developing spiritual intelligence begins with solitude (独处) and silence. To tune in to your spirits, you have to turn down the volume (强度) in your busy, noisy, complicated life and force yourself to do nothing at all. Start small by creating islands for silence in your day. In the car, instead of listening to the music, use the time to think. At work, shut the door to your office between meetings, take a few breaths and let them out very, very slowly. Enjoy the stillness in your home after the kids are finally in bed.

Step Outside. For many people, nature sets their spirit free. Go outside to watch a beautiful sunset. If you are walking with the dog, take the time to admire flowers in bloom; follow the flight of birds and watch clouds float overhead.

Ask Questions of Yourself. Ask open-ended questions, such as “What am I feeling? What are my choices? Where am I heading?”

But don’t expect an answer to arrive through some supernatural form or e-mail. “Rarely do I get an immediate answer to my question,” says Reverend Joan Carter, a Presbyterian minister in Sausalito, California. “But later that day I suddenly find myself thinking about a problem in a perspective(角度) I never considered before.”

Trust Your Spirit. While most of us rely on instinctive feeling to realize danger, spiritual intelligence pushes us, not away from, but towards some action that will lead to a greater good.

Most American kids love Halloween treats, but a bucket of Halloween candy can be a dentist’s nightmare. Some parents try to get rid of half of the candy after their children go to bed, but dentists say parents also need to separate the good kinds of treats from the bad.

It is not exactly what a child eats that truly matters, but how much time it stays in his mouth. According to pediatric dentist Dr. Kaneta Lott, the most damaging stuff is something that is sticky or very hard and thus stays in the mouth for a long time. This is because we all have bacteria in our mouths. When we eat, the bacteria take our food as their food and produce an acid that destroys the surface of the teeth, causing cavities to form. The longer the food stays in the mouth, the more likely cavities will develop. Therefore, potato chips are worse than candy because they get stuck between teeth. For the same reason, raisins and crackers are not the best choice. Hard candies take a long time to consume and are also a bad choice for Halloween treats.

If children really love candy, dentists recommend that they eat chocolate instead. Unlike hard candies, chocolate dissolves quickly in the mouth. Besides, chocolate contains tannins, which help to kill some of the bacteria in the mouth. But no matter what a child eats, brushing after each meal is still the best way to fight cavities.

I was sleeping for over a week after a traffic accident. The only sounds that could be heard were coming from the machines that were   36   me alive.

All my family members were   37   ways to wake me up from my silence.

Greg, my brother in law,   38   to take some of my songs I had recently recorded to a local radio station,   39   he explained about my illness. He told them he was   40   I could hear what was going on around me and that he knew having my own songs   41   on the radio had been a huge dream of mine. This would definitely   42   me and do more than any medicine or machine could.

The radio station agreed to help and gave him a specific date and time   43  he could have a radio “  40  ” at my hospital bed. Greg’s decision had filled everyone with   45   and now the moment arrived. Nervous from expectation, all my family members   46   hands and watched over me hoping for a   47  .

The DJ made a pre song announcement about my   48   to the general audience, and then spoke directly to me.

“Shelly, this is for you. I want you to really listen now. This is not just   49   song we’re playing, but your family’s song of hope. All of us at KKDJ wish you a speedy   50  .

Everyone in the room held their breath and watched   51   as the music began. Later they all witnessed the tears   52   down my pale cheeks. Though still not awake, it was obvious I heard my song.

Just a few days later, hope turned into   53  . I did in fact awake. Though not   54   unscathed (未受伤的), I did not suffer from the disabilities that had been predicted.

Hope is the part of us that makes us pick up the pieces and try again.   55   hope where would we be?
