The physicians in a hospital form the center of medical staff. But they could not provide effective medical care to their patients without the help of numerous other medical employees. From the viewpoint of the patients, the nursing staff is particularly important. Nurses are usually in close contact with patients as long as they are in the hospital.

A nurse does not study for as many years as a doctor. However, each must be equally Dedicated. Caring for sick persons requires a great deal of patience and concern. Most nurses work long days, and they often must work at odd hours or during the night.

Under the supervision of the head nurse, the nursing staff must provide nursing services on a 24-hour basis and attend to patients' needs. This responsibility continues around the clock, and so nurses must work in shifts. A shift is a period of duty, usually eight in length. The nurses on the ward rotate their shifts. Some take turns working night duty; others work odd shifts.

A nurse must always be alert. She can never afford to be careless. This is true in all nursing situation, but it is especially true in the intensive care unit. Patients under intensive care arc critically ill, and they must be monitored at all times. The nurses who do intensive care duty have one of the most demanding jobs in the hospital.

Serving as a nurse can be a very rewarding job. But it is not an easy one. Not every person is suited to become a nurse. Only very dedicated people have chosen nursing as a profession.

Our sense of hearing is one of the most important means of knowing what is going on around us. We are warned of danger by sounds. The sounds of music please us. Sound has a waste product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better.

Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals and are alarmed by what they have learned.

Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is no joke. It is a threat that should be looked at carefully.

Sound is measured in units called decibels (分贝). At a level of 140 decibels people feel pain in their ears.

Trucks, buses, motorcycles, airplanes, boats, and factories all make noise. This noise bothers not only our ears, but our minds and bodies as well.

There is a saying about "it is so noisy that you can't hear yourself think". Doctors who study noise believe that we must be able to hear ourselves think most of the time. If we don't, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even mental problems. Noise adds even more tension to a society which already faces too much stress.

Some kids don't use alcohol. If the statistics are correct, about 30 percent of high school seniors don't use alcohol, and an even higher percentage of younger kids are abstinent (节制的). What helps promote abstinence? Research indicates that kids are less likely to engage in under age drinking when some or several of the following conditions exist:

1.Role modelling: Parents who do not drink or drink only a little have a stronger influence on their teens and serve as good models.

2.Monitoring: Teens who are guided in positive structure of their time and home environment are less likely to be bored and left alone to make their own decisions. High-risk situations are more readily recognized by parents and acted upon before they become serious problem.

3.Supervision (管理): Parents who stay actively involved with their children, showing interest in their activities and participate when possible, earn the respect and appreciation of their children. They also understand their children better and can identify danger signals more quickly.

4.Communication: Children benefit from healthy, open communication with their parents and other significant adults. Failure to communicate leaves children isolated. Parents who listen as well as speak――and when they speak, do so with respect and kindness, instead of ordering- -have a stronger rapport (亲善) with their children.

5.School support: Failure in school damages self-esteem and is one of the biggest contributors to child delinquency (犯罪). When school administer programmes that are child-sensitive, this helps children to be successful in school. A strength-based approach, gives children a better chance of maintaining interest and motivation.

Like most July days, it was hot. I stepped into a tiny ice-cream shop to cool off with a chocolate ice-cream. There was an old woman bending over a table near the door. Her back was so badly twisted that her face nearly touched the tabletop. I sat sown facing her couple of tables away.

" Poor woman," I thought "What does she get out of life? Why God let people live so long past their prime?"

As I thought, another aged lady entered the shop and sat down with her. Soon the two of them were talking about childhood days. They talked of how little the shop had changed in 70 years. . .In minutes, the two of them were trembling with laughter.

I looked again at the first woman, then in the mirror on a nearby wall, catching a picture of myself. I was wearing a dirty shirt. She was well dressed in white, her hands sparking with gold  rings. I was sad. She was laughing, smiling. I was putting the pieces of my life together. She had millions of wonderful memories to recall. I sat alone. She was sharing the day with a good friend. I was secretly worried about getting old. She was old, but it wasn't hurting her.

As I left the shop, I thought of my foolish question about God letting people live past their prime. Why, that woman was more alive, more sensitive to life than I was. Age has not bent her spirit.
