In my experience, one of the greatest reasons of unhappiness is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are. When we see something we don’t like, we wish it could be different–we cry out for something better. That may be human nature, or perhaps it’s something that has been grown in our culture.

The root of the unhappiness isn’t that we want things to be different, however, it’s that we decided we didn’t like it in the first place. We’ve judged it as bad, rather than saying, “It’s not bad or good, but it just is.”

Here is an example.I have written a paper, A Beautiful Method to Find Peace of Mind.Quite a few people think it bad after reading it because I think people should expect things to go differently than you planned, and that you should accept that, instead of encouraging people to change themselves or the environment as much as possible. You could accept it as the way the world works–as the way things actually are.And try to understand why that is, and follow it, as it is.

This can be useful to whatever you do: whether it be how other people act at work, how politics works and how depressing the news media can be.Accept these things as they are, and try to understand why they’re that way.

It’ll save you a lot of sadness because you’ll no longer say, “Oh, I wish things didn’t go bad!”

If you really understand what I mean, you can try a different way to live in this world:accept, and understand. It might lead to some interesting results.

Walking down any of Shanghai’s main shopping streets this week, newcomers might think the locals have been celebrating Christmas for centuries. Christmas may not be a customary holiday in China, but businessmen in Shanghai know it will bring something more valuable than tradition: people are willing to spend money. Most Chinese may feel little connection with the Christmas celebration, but with most shops offering discount (折扣), the message couldn’t be clearer-- it is the season to part with one’s hard-earned cash.

Much of that marketing drive is directed towards thousands of foreigners and foreign companies that call Shanghai home. But for Shanghai’s 13 million locals, regardless of personal interest, there seems no avoiding the season’s commercial greetings. Along some major roads, nearly every shop window displays some symbols to the holiday: a man-made fir tree(杉树) with lights, or a snowman.

With an increasing number of westerners arriving in the city for work, young Shanghainese, eager to keep pace with the latest western fashions, have begun to show their interest in Christmas. But some people still don’t think Christmas is an important festival in China. At least it is less important than the New Year and China’s Spring Festival.

. Why are people willing to spend money during Christmas?

A. They have earned a lot of money.

B. Goods are much cheaper during this period of time.

C. It is time for shops to sell goods.

D. Businessmen like Christmas.

Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Christmas is the season people will hold their hard-earned money tightly.

B. Most Chinese people think they have something to do with Christmas.

C. Christmas is the season for common people to earn money.

D. Few Chinese people feel they are connected with Christmas celebrations.

Why do some young Shanghainese show great interest in Christmas?

A. They think themselves connected with Christmas celebrations.

B. They think Christmas is more important than New Year’s Day.

C. They want to follow the up-to-date western fashions.

D. They want to part with their hard-earned cash during Christmas.

From the first paragraph we know that _______.

A. It is difficult for most people to earn money.

B. It is easy for most people to earn money.

C. Only foreigners in Shanghai celebrate Christmas.

D. Christmas will be as important as China’s Spring Festival.

Have you ever seen any students whose trousers hang so low that you can see their underwear? What do you think of that?Fashionable? Some of today’s teenagers are big fans of such a look. But recently this trend has been at the centre of an argument in Italian middle schools.

The headmaster of a school in central Italy has asked students to stop wearing low—rise jeans that expose underwear and parts of the body. His request came after a class trip.when he saw one boy’s baggy trousers slide to his feet.He pointed out that this way of dressing is not suitable for schoo1.

But in Italy,a nation that takes fashion very seriously, the suggestion caused a debate among parents.teachers and students. The issue is whether the head teacher’s request will limit students’ freedom—or whether dress in Italian schools is too casual(随意的).

A parents’group praised the proposal in favour of good taste, while others advised schools to stop worrying about fashion and fix up old school buildings.

“We do not want to kick fashion out,’’ the headmaster explained.“But extremes of fashion like this are not right in schoo1.”Many other schools have now requested that their students also stop wearing such trousers.

Most students have simply ignored the request.Ludovica Gaudio,14,wore extremelv low trousers exposing orange underwear in class. It was cold,so she wore a matching orange scarf(围巾).Another 14-year-old said she should probably respect the request, simply for practical reasons.”I don’t really feel comfortable in those sort of jeans”,said Sarah Lattanzi.”In winter, when dressed like that,it’s quite cold and I am afraid my stomach will ache.”

The advertisement appeared in my e-mail—“1-800-Flowers: Mother’s Day Madness —for just $39.99!” I almost clicked on it, forgetting that those services would not be needed this year. My mother, Margaret Feiddman, died at the age of 89, and so this is my first Mother’s Day without my mom.

In my childhood, my mom appeared to be a typical suburban housewife of her generation. She sewed many of my sisters’ clothes, including both of their wedding dresses and boy’s suits for me. And on the side, she won several national bridge tournaments(桥牌锦标赛).

My mom left many indelible marks on me. The first was to never lose heart and to be independent. My dad died suddenly when I was 19. My mom worked hard for a couple of years. But in1975, I won a scholarship to study in Britain and my mom surprised us all by announcing that she decided to go with me. When I met difficulties, she always said: “You’re a man, so never lose heart, never be knocked down, and try your best to pursue(追求) your dreams.”

My mom’s other big influence on me is a sense of optimism (乐观). She had taken her knocks. But every time life knocked her down, she got up and kept on marching forward, encouraged by the saying that pessimists(悲观者) are usually right, optimists are usually wrong, but most great changes are made by optimists.

How I wish to listen to my mother’s words, and give my best regards on this Mother’s Day, but I have no chance now! My best friends, treasure(珍惜)your mother’s love!
