It was graduation day at Etihad Training Academy, where the national airline of the United Arab Emirates holds a seven-week training course for new flight attendants.

Despite her obvious pride, Ms. Fathi, a 22-year-old from Egypt, was amazed to find herself here. “I never in my life thought I’d work abroad,” said Ms. Fathi, who was a university student in Cairo when she began noticing newspaper advertisements employing young Egyptians to work at airlines based in the Persian Gulf.

A decade ago, unmarried Arab women like Ms. Fathi, working outside their home countries, were rare. But just as young men from poor Arab nations poured into the oil-rich Persian Gulf states for jobs, more young women are doing so.

Flight attendants have become the public face of the new mobility for some young Arab women, just as they were the face of new freedoms for women in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. They have become a subject of social anxiety and fascination in much the same way.

For many families, allowing a daughter to work may call her virtue into question. Yet this culture is changing, said Musa Shteiwi, a sociologist at Jordan University in Amman. “We’re noticing more and more single women going to the gulf these days,” he said. “It’s still not exactly common, but over the last four or five years it’s become quite an observable phenomenon.”

Many of the young Arab women working in the Persian Gulf take delight in their status as pioneers, role models for their friends and younger female relatives. Young women brought up in a culture that highly values community, have learned to see themselves as individuals. The experience of living independently and working hard for high salaries has forever changed their beliefs about themselves, though it can also lead to a painful sense of separation from their home countries and their families.

For almost two months Dominic York, a 23-year-old hairdresser, wandered about hospitals all night, wearing a white coat and pretending he was a doctor. Yesterday he proudly claimed in court that despite his complete lack of medical experience or qualifications, he had saved several people’s lives. He had even been allowed to assist a surgeon during an emergency operation on a patient who was about to die on something she had swallowed.

“I watched one of those TV dramas about a hospital and suddenly I felt like playing one of the roles myself. So I put on a white jacket and a stethoscope(听诊器)and walked around one of the biggest hospital in London. At first I just watched. Once you learn how doctors talk to patients, nurses and others doctors, it’s easy to take people in,” he said.

She didn’t think there was anything wrong. “I would never have realized he was a fake if a policewoman hadn’t showed me his photograph a week later. When the policewoman told me who he really was, I could hardly believe my ears.”

Judge Raymond Adams told York that he was “ shocked and horrified” that he got away with his deceiving for so long, and then sentenced him to eighteen months in a special prison for criminal with mental disorders.

“I can only hope that this will not lead to further problems. After all, you will have considerable opportunity to study the behaviour of the psychiatrists(精神科医生)who will look after you while you are there. If you try to persuade people that you yourself are a psychiatrist after you are set free, I shall make sure that you are given a much longer sentence.” Judge Adams warned York.

     A. She had swallowed something and almost died.

     B. She had to have and emergency operation.

     C. She had been injured in a road accident.

     D. She had lost consciousness while driving.

Making friends can be difficult, especially these days with so much peer pressure(同龄人之间的压力). If you want to develop a more pleasing personality and make friends, become  genuinely(真诚地) interested in other people. Show kindness. You may be wearing the latest  designer label clothes, the hottest brand shoes, and the coolest jewelry, but if you display sourness  and selfishness, you'll have a battle ahead of you to make good friends.Smile, smile and continue to smile. It costs nothing, enriches those who receive it, and  happens in a flash but the memory lasts forever, it creates happiness in the home and classroom. A smile can not be bought, begged or borrowed; it comes from the heart. If you want other people to   like you, make the other person feel important - and do it sincerely!Choose your friends carefully. If others try to persuade you to smoke, take illegal drugs, steal, gamble, fight etc. dare to say NO. Doing the wrong thing is the quickest way to lose friends, especially honest, good and upright friends.

Being mentally strong is not always easy, but let me assure you that the more you practice it,__________. Soon those who thought they were trendy will want to dress like you, talk like  you and be with you, because you have a personality which is different. People like being different!By being an individual with your own personality, you can achieve the very best experiences in   your life.

You may not ever have many friends, but let me tell you that it is better to have one good  friend than ten dishonest friends who will stab(伤害)you in the back at the very first opportunity  that arises.

The United States will introduce a new and comprehensive(综合的) exam for students who seek to study in American and other English-speaking countries, Xinhua News Agency reported from New York.

The exam, which stands for a great change from the current English level test, was disclosed by Theresa Chang Wei Jen, associate director of the International Service of the US College Board, America’s leading educational organization.

The Advanced Placement International English Language (APIEL) will be offered for the first time throughout the world on May 10, 2002, said Jen.

However, the APIEL is a strange title to most Chinese students, and it is unlikely to soon gain the similarity of other already existing exams, such as the TOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language), the GRE(Graduate Record Examination), or the IELTS(International English Language Testing System).

“I have never heard of such a test and I would prefer the IELTS if I need another exam,” said Xu Jingyan, a graduating student from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, who wants to study in England and has already taken the TOEFL.

Most of Xu’s classmates have never heard of the APIEL. “The APIEL is designed for international students who wish to get university studies in English-speaking countries, including the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia.” said Jen.

The APIEL has been adopted, said Jen, because the TOEFL can no longer accurately reflect the abilities of students of using the English language comprehensively in an academic environment. Xinhua reported that a fairly large number of foreign students who earned high scores in TOEFL exam turned out to be very ordinary educational performers after admission.

Compared with the TOEFL, the APIEL measures a student’s ability to read, write, speak and understand English through testing his or her skills in listening comprehension, speaking with accuracy(精确) and resourcefulness, and writing with clarity and fluency(流畅), Jen said.

72. The United States will introduce a new exam because _______.

   A. more and more students want to get further education in the USA

   B. the Chinese people pay special attention to English studies with China’s entry into the WTO

   C. the already existing exam systems seem to be far from perfect

   D. it will bring the US government quite a lot of money

73. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the selection?

   A. It will take quite a period of time for people to accept the APIEL.

   B. The TOEFL is more popular with the Chinese than the IELTS.

   C. A student will have to take the APIEL if he or she wants to study in English—speaking countries from 2002.

   D. Chinese students will prefer the IELTS rather than the APIEL even in the future.

74. The underlined word “current” in the second paragraph means _______.

   A. modern              B. present             C. standard           D. formal

75. Please decide which of the following would be the best title for this news report.

   A. The Key to English-speaking Countries      B. The Four Skills in Learning English
