Our eating habits(习惯) are very important for good health and a strong body. There are times when most of us would rather eat sweets and ice-cream than meat and rice. Sweets and ice-cream are not bad if we eat them at the end of a meal. If we eat them before a meal, they may take away our appetite(食欲). It is important for us to eat our meals at the same time each day. When we feel hungry, it is a sign that our body needs food. When we feel angry or excited, we may not want to eat. A long time ago, in England, some judges(法官) used to decide whether a man was telling the truth by giving him some dry bread. If the man could not eat the bread, it showed that he was telling lies. Although this seems very strange and rather foolish, it is indeed a very good way of finding out the fact. A man who is worrying about something has difficulty in eating anything dry. Because he is worrying, he loses his appetite and does not want to eat.

As Christmas approaches, towns and cities around the UK are preparing for a very British celebration.

The switching on of a town' s Christmas lights has become an increasingly competitive event over the years, with some councils (会议) spending lots of money to attract A-list famous persons to do the honors.

The American singer Mariah Carey flew to London in November to switch on the lights at one of the city's biggest shopping centers, while Jim Carrey lighted Oxford Street and promoted his new film at the same time.

Traffic in the historic English city of Bath was brought to a halt as thousands of fans crowded to see the Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage conducted the switching-on ceremony.

Some celebrations do not go according to the plan, as was seen in Birmingham when dozens of people were injured as the famous British boy band JLS took the stage.

Not all towns can afford to bring in an internationally-known star, so many switchon ceremonies are handled by ex-TV talent show competitors.

Pantomime (圣诞童话剧) stars are also much in demand at this time of year, as they aim to promote their Christmas shows.

But if your council hasn't got the budget to bring in a famous face, what are the cheaper alternatives?

A town in the west of England chose to let the public decide by giving their suggestions online. The result: a 21-year-old DIY store worker was given the honor.

"I was amazed and delighted to be asked," said Scott Parker, "it's just a special gift and not something I'd, ever thought about before."

A new study in West Africa shows how farm irrigationsystems powered by the sun can pro-duce more food and money for villagers. The study-in Benin found that solar - powered pumpsare effective in 8upplying water, especially during the long dry season.

Sub - Saharan Africa is the part of the world with the least food security. The United Na-tions Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that more"than one biillion of the world' s peo-ple faced hunger last year.Around 265 million of them live'south of the Sahara Desert:  Lack of  rainfallis one oftheir main causes offood shortages. .

Jennifer Bumey from Stanford University in Califomia led the study. The research team helped build three solar - powered drip irrigation -(滴灌) ,systems in northem Benin. Between 30 and 35 women used each system to pump water from the ground or a stream. Each woman was responsible for farming her own 120 sqrurre meters of land. They also farmed other land  collectively.

The solar - powered irrigation systems produced an average of nearly two tons of vegetables per montb. During the first year, the women.kept a monthly average of almost rune kilograms of vegetables for home use. They sold the surplus produce at local markets. The eamings greatly increased their ability to buy food during the dry season which can last six to nine months. Peo- ple in the'two villages with the systems were able to eat three to five more servingsof yegetables per day.But making the surplus available at markets also had a wider effect.

The study compared the villages with two others where women farmed with traditional methods like carrying water in buckets. The amount of vegetables eaten in those villages also  increased, though not as much. The researchers note that only four percent of the croplamd in sub - Saharan Africa is irrigated. Using solar power to pump water has higher costs at first. But    the study says it can be more economical in the long term than using fuels like gasoline,  diesel  or kerosene. And solar power is environmentally friendly.

Don't believe all of the stereotypes (模式化的形象) you may have heard about Americans.Even the ones that are true in general may not be true about specific individuals or a large part of the population. For example, although Americans tend to be louder than people from other cultures(especially at athletic events),many of the people you meet will be quiet and polite. Some people may be intolerant, but most will be pleasant and welcoming.Remember that American films and television exaggerate(夸张)in order to generate excitement, and so present a rather false picture of what 1ife in the United States is really like. Therefore, tourists in the US are not always on their best behavior.

Americans do tend to be more informal than people from other countries. It is common for Americans to wear casual clothing to school and to greet professors by first name. However, good manners and politeness are always appreciated. If you are polite, and dress a little more formally than your American friends,it will not be poorly thought of.

However, some businesses require their employees to wear a uniform or a suit.It would be improper to wear a T-shirt and blue jeans to a job interview. Some of the more prestigious restaurants require a coat and tie.Americans tend to dress up for cultural events(the opera, theater and ballet)and to dress down for athletic events.Formal wear is required at weddings and funerals,or any other event with religious event. If you rely on the stereotypes, you will likely put yourself into an embarrassing situation

60. The underlined sentence probably means       .

A. Some of the stereotypes you may have heard about Americans are not true

D. American film--makers

62. The second paragraph suggests that      .

A. most Americans are polite

B. people who are polite are welcome

C. casual clothing makes others uncomfortable

D. American students are impolite to their teachers

63. We can learn from the passage that      .

A. American films are mostly poor comedies

B. it is good manners to wear blue jeans to a wedding

. Americans usually wear formal clothes in a theater

D. to dress formally makes others feel you are not easy to get on with

How Room Designs Affect Our Work and Feelings

Architects have long had the feeling that the places we live in can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. But now scientists are giving this feeling an empirical(经验的,实证的) basis. They are discovering how to design spaces that promote creativity, keep people focused and lead to relaxation.

Researches show that aspects of the physical environment can influence creativity. In 2007, Joan Meyers-Levy at the University of Minnesota, reported that the height of a room's ceiling affects how people think. Her research indicates that higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections. Low ceilings, on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook.

In additions to ceiling height, the view afforded by a building may influence an occupant's ability to concentrate. Nancy Wells and her colleagues at Cornell University found in their study that kids who experienced the greatest increase in greenness as a result of a family move made the most gains on a standard test of attention.

Using nature to improve focus of attention ought to pay off  academically, and it seems to, according to a study led by C. Kenneth Tanner, head of the School Design & Planning Laboratory at the University of Georgia. Tanner and his team found that students in classrooms with unblocked views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores on tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than did students whose classrooms primarily overlooked roads and parking lots.

Recent study on room lighting design suggests that dim(暗淡的) light helps people to loosen up. If that is true generally, keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase relaxation. Researchers of Harvard Medical School also discovered that furniture with rounded edges could help visitors relax.

So far scientists have focused mainly on public buildings. "We have a very limited number of studies, so we're almost looking at the problem through a straw(吸管)," architect David Allison says. "How do you take answers to very specific questions and make broad, generalized use of them? That's what we're all struggling with."

What does Joan Meyers-Levy focus on in her research?

A.  Light.      B.  Ceilings.     C.  Windows.     D.  Furniture.

The passage tells us that ______.

   A. the shape of furniture may affect people's feelings

   B. lower ceilings may help improve students' creativity

   C. children in a dim classroom may improve their grades

   D. students in rooms with unblocked views may feel relaxed

The underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably means that ______.

   A. the problem is not approached step by step

   B. the researches so far have faults in themselves

   C. the problem is too difficult for researchers to detect

   D. research in this area is not enough to make generalized patterns

70. Which of the following shows the organization of the passage?
