      You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the start they

success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is "blown up" in a battle scene, he has to jump out
of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.
       Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously
injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff (悬崖) a
thousand feet high. His parachute (降落伞) failed to open, and he was killed. In spite of all the risks, this is no

     Clear, 69°F
     My wife, Eleanor, and I took the train from Paris to Strasbourg, where we were met by our driver and
guide. And the minibus which goes along with the boat. We stopped off in Barn for an hour on the way.
Then we were taken to Nancy where the boat was kept.
     After the other passengers arrived, we had our first dinner on the boat. After dinner we walked into
downtown Nancy, a village with a large square and wooden houses.

     Monday, October 5
     Rained last night, cloudy in the morning, 69°F
     We spent about two hours in Nancy, then sailed on the Canal de la Marne au Rhine. Kind of a lazy day.
Eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner, after dinner we watched a tape on Baccarat. Where we will visit tomorrow.
     It was pleasant to sit out on deck (甲板) and watch the scenery go by at about 3 mph.

     Monday, October 7
     Light rain, 64°F
     This mourning we drove over to Baccarat and toured its museum and the church, which has this
unbelievable lamp that is going on a world tour the next day. We did lost of shopping, then walked across the
bridge to see a very, very modern Catholic church with special Baccarat windows.
     We drove to the top of the Voges Mountains and started down the eastern side Later we drove to
Sorrenbourg to see the 13th century church at the Cordeliers. It contains the largest window by Marc Chagall-
24 feet wide by 40 feet high.

     Today we sailed from Schneckenbush to Saverne. We went though two caves, an extremely unusual part
of the journey. This river scenery is very different. We were in a mountain valley with grassland on one side
and a forest beginning to show some color on the other.

     Having a husband means an extra seven hours of housework each week for women, according to a new
study. For men, getting married saves an hour of housework a week. "It's a well-known pattern," said lead
researcher Frank Stafford at University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research. "Men usually work more
outside the home, while women take on more of the housework."
     He points out that differences among households (家庭) exist. But in general, marriage means more
housework for women and less for men. "And the situation gets worse for women when they have children,"
Stafford said.
     Overall, times are changing in the American home. In 1976, women busied themselves with 26 weekly
hours of sweeping-and-dusting work, compared with 17 hours in 2005. Men are taking on more housework,
more than doubling their housework hours from six in 1976 to 13 in 2005.
     Single women in their 20s and 30s did the least housework, about 12 weekly hours, while married women
in their 60s and 70s did the most-about 21 hours a week.
     Men showed a somewhat different pattern, with older men picking up the broom more often than younger
men. Single men worked the hardest around the house, more than that of all other age groups of married men.
     Having children increases housework even further. With more than three children, for example, wives took
on more of the extra work, clocking about 28 hours a week compared with husbands'10 hours.

     These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new
shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of products say they can
shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to beauty or desirability.
     Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoter. The re they produce
are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.
     To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary? Understand
something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA (Food Drug Administration)
can require proof (证明) under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that safe and effective before it is put on
the market. But if the product is a device, FDA. has no author to require premarketing proof of safety or
effectiveness. If a product already on the marker danger to health, FDA. can request the producer or distributor
to remove it from the a voluntarily, or it can take legal action,including seizure (查封) of the product.
     One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, had been sold for

     Tens of thousands of theatre tickets will be given away to young people next year as part of a government
campaign to inspire a lifelong love for theatre.
     The plan to offer free seats to people aged between 18 to 26-funded with ￡2.5 million of taxpayers' money-
was announced yesterday by Andy Burnham, the Culture Secretary. It received a cautious welcome from some
in the arts world, who expressed concern that the tickets may not reach the most underprivileged.
     The plan comes as West End theatres are enjoying record audiences, thanks largely to musicals teaming up
with television talent shows. Attendances reached. 13.6 million in 2007, up 10 percent on 2006, itself a record
year. Total sales were up 18 percent on 2006 to almost ￡470 million.
     One theatre source criticized the Government's priorities (优先考虑的事) in funding free tickets when
pensioners were struggling to buy food and fuel, saying:"I don't know why the Government's wasting money
on this. The Yong Vic, as The Times reported today, offers excellent performances at cheap prices."
     There was praise for the Government's plan from Dominic Cooke of the Royal Court Theatre, who said:"I
support any move to get young people into theatre, and especially one that aims to do it all over England, not
just in London."
     Ninety-five publicly funded theatres could apply for funding under the two-year plan. In return, they will
offer free tickets on at least one day each week to 18 to 26-year-olds, first-come, first-served. It is likely to be
on Mondays, traditionally a quiet night for the theatre.
     Mr. Burnham said:"A young person attending the theatre can find it an exciting experience, and be inspired
to explore a new world. But sometimes people miss out on it because they fear it's 'not for them'. It's time to
change this perception."
     Jeremy Hunt, the Shadow Culture Secretary, said:"The real issue is not getting enthusiastic children into the
theatre, but improving arts education so that more young people want to go in the first place. For too many
children theatres are a no-go area."

     America hopes to start building a base that can continue to exist all the time on the moon within 20 years.
By the mid-2020s, astronauts will be staying there for six months a time. So what do scientists think food
and water will be like for those first moon residents?
     In the short term, food would have to be brought from Earth. The dream, however, is to grow things in
greenhouses on the moon. "You'd grow things in the liquid-there's no reason why that wouldn't work," says
Pillinger, a professor. This would mean floating plants in a nutrient-rich solution of water. "Soil is not a
necessary thing for plants; it's only to keep them standing upright," Pillinger adds.
     It would take at least a decade of experiments after the base was built before such a plan would work,
however. The main problem is working out how to get nutrients from the lunar soil. "Getting all that to work
requires a minimum level of infrastructure (基础设施) present before you can start experimenting with
greenhouses," says Pillinger.
     Finding strong plants to grow in space will also be hard, though scientists are already working on it:
scientist Amy Grunden of North Carolina State University has been working on genetically engineering food
crops that can be grown in harsh, off-planet environments.

     While small may be beautiful, tall is just plain uncomfortable it seems, particularly when it comes to staying
in hotels and eating in restaurants.
     The Tall Persons Club Great Britain (TPCGB), which was formed six months ago to campaign (发起运动)
for the needs of the tall, has turned its attention to hotels and restaurants. Beds that are too small, shower heads
that are too low, and restaurant tables with hardly any leg-room all make life difficult for those of above average
height, it says.
     But it is not just the extra-tall whose needs are not being met. The average height of the population has been
increasing yet the standard size of beds, doorways, and chairs has remained unchanged.
     "The bedding industry says a bed should be six inches larger than the person using it, so even a king-size
bed at 6'6"(6 feet and 6 inches) is falling short for 25% of men, while the standard 6'3"bed caters for (满足需
要) less than half of the male(男性) population,"said TPCGB president Phil Heinricy,"Seven-foot beds would
work fine."
     Similarly, restaurant tables can cause no end of problems. Small tables, which mean the long-legged have
