When I was a little girl, my mom would say, "Half the fun of doing anything is sharing it with others."
1   Friends and mates allow us to enjoy our successes and our joys, comfort us in our hard moments,
and provide a mirror for us to learn more about ourselves. I've always looked at friends as the family we
choose. They enrich our lives. As Robert Louis Steven once said, "  2  "
To be a good friend or partner, it's important to be a good listener. Hear what your friend or mate has
to say first rather than jump to conclusions or get defensive.   3   When they hear their words repeated
back to them, it can help them to realize what they said was not exactly what they meant to say.
4    You know the old golden rule,"Care for others the way you would like them to care for you." The
support of a friend during a tough time could make the difference between success and failure.
Encouragement and confidence are the gifts that can help change a person's life.
Take care, though, with whom you choose to have close relationship, for they can have a great effect
on yourself-respect and life path. As someone once told me,"   5   They will either take you up or down."
A. I am afraid so.
B. It is quite true.
C. Friendship is the most important factor.
D. Sometimes it is useful to be their mirror.
E. A friend is a present which you give yourself.
F. The attitudes of your friends are like the buttons on a lift.
G. Patience, sympathy and understanding are also important qualities.

                                                                   Life in 2060
Let us suppose it is now about A.D. 2060. Let's imagine it is about fifty years from now. Of course, things have changed and life is very different.
Voyages to the moon are being made every day. It is as easy to take a holiday on the moon today as it was
for the people in 1960 to take a holiday in Europe. At a number of scenic spots on the moon, many hotels have
been built. The hotels are air-conditioned, naturally. In order that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery on
the moon, every room has at least one picture window. Everything imaginable is provided for entertainment of
young and old.
What are people eating now? People are still eating food. But many foods now come in pill form, and the
food that goes into the pill continues to come mainly from green plants.
Since there are several times as many people in the world today as there were a hundred years ago, most of
our planet's surface has to be filled. The deserts are irrigated with water and crops are no longer destroyed by
pests. The harvest is always good.
Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. It is possible to
run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then.
People are now largely vegetarians (素食者). You see, as the number of people increases, the number of
animals decreases. Therefore, the people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier both in our bodies and in
our minds, and we know the causes and cure of disease and pain, and it is possible to get rid of diseases. No
one has to be ill any more.
Such would be our life in 2060.

A. Many tourists.
B. Many other animals.
C. Many plants.
D. A sea.
2. What will people eat then according to the passage?
A. Biscuits in pill form.
B. Foods in pill form.

3. The passage tells us that in 2060, _____ on the earth than now.
A. there are fewer population
B. there are more pests
C. there is less water
D. the crops are getting better
4. Why are people largely vegetarians in 2060?
A. Because they don't eat meat.

C. Because the number of animals decreases.
D. Because all the animals have died of diseases.

While being laid off and entering into retirement are far from the same, they both often leave one half of
a couple with extra time on their hands, and plenty of pent-up(被压制的) energy that their significant other, coming home after a long day at work, can't handle.
WSJ.com recently wrote an article that shared a few words of wisdom on how to deal with this situation.
Here are a few of their tips:
     1. Be nice to each other and have a positive attitude.
As hard as it may be, try to not be discouraged during the job search and make sure to support your
spouse(配偶). If one of you says something negative, the other should try to come back with a positive.
And don't forget, compliments can go a long way.
     2. Encourage your partner to take up a hobby, get a side job or join a club.

Typically, people work an average of forty hours a week, eight to nine hours a day. So is it any wonder
that someone suddenly unemployed might go crazy with all that free time?
In order to squash the boredom before it begins, encourage your partner to stay as busy as possible. Stay
healthy and join a sports team, or learn how to cook (this benefits your spouse as well).
Another option is taking up a side job serving food or working as a sales associate. This will allow your
sweetie to interact with other people as well as earn some money. But, of course, new hobbies shouldn't
take up the time needed to continue the job hunt.
     3. Encourage them to continue their existing friendships and to foster(培养) new ones.
As WSJ.com points out, those who recently lost their jobs are sometimes embarrassed and therefore
shut out family and friends. They might cling(依靠)to their partners for support. Tell your wife or husband
to talk to their families and friends. They know and love them, and can be a good support system (rather
than a support group of one: you).
     4. Give each other a little space before and after "couple time."
You may be happy to spend time with your significant other but need a little alone time after working all
day. To the recently laid off: let your partner settle down, drink a beer, and watch a little television before
you bombard (发出连珠炮似的问题)him with your idea to go skydiving or white water rafting. You may
have an endless amount of pent up energy, but they probably need some space to relax.
5. Trust each other.
When everything is going great, it's easy to be happy and to trust your partner is doing everything he
should. It's not nearly as simple when half of your income is gone. Stand by each other as a couple and
trust that each of you is doing everything necessary to get another job.

How to wash clothes in a flash
LAUNDRY is never an easy part of housework. But if piles of sweaty (汗水浸湿的) T-shirts and
smelly socks drive you crazy, then two Chinese scientists might have the answer.
Long Mingce and Wu Deyong of Shanghai Jiao Tong University have invented a kind of cotton that
cleans itself. No need for soap or water, the scientists say. All you have to do is put the clothes out in the
sun.
According to the Guardian, this magical self-cleaning ability comes from a special chemical mixture.
The material is covered with this mixture. It can break down dirt and remove bad smells after only a few
hours in the sun.
One of the chemicals is called titanium dioxide (二氧化钛). Scientists have known for some time that
titanium dioxide can clean fabrics (织物). However , it only works under ultraviolet (紫外的) light and so
is not yet widely used - ultraviolet light cannot be seen.
"We knew that self-cleaning cotton fabrics with titanium dioxide coating had already been developed,
but they cannot work, or they work weakly, under sunlight," Long said. "If we want to use the fabrics in
daily life, we must develop cotton that cleans itself under daylight."
The scientists worked hard for years to find a better chemical. Finally , they added silver iodide (碘化银) into the mixture. This made the chemical reactions in sunlight faster. The new mixture is also nearly
seven times better than the former one with pure titanium dioxide at removing dirt and killing bacteria.
The experiment was only carried out on cotton clothing. However, according to Long, the technology
can be "applied to all kinds of fabrics and their related products." It is also cheap and environmentally
friendly , he said.
The self-cleaning material is not yet ready for the market. Scientists still need to know whether it could
harm people. Although titanium dioxide is used in some foods, it can cause health problems if it gets into
the lungs (肺). Scientists need to make sure it is safe before we can start to enjoy the benefits of this
technology .
1. Thanks to this new discovery, we will be able to clean fabrics ___ .
A. using soap and water
B. using silver iodide
C. using sunlight
D. using moonlight
2. In what way is the new material better than previous materials ?
A. It works using any kind of light.
B. It works more quickly and effectively.
C. It is widely found in nature.
D. It can be used for all kinds of fabrics .
3. What might be a problem with the self-cleaning material ?
A. It will cause pollution.
B. It costs too much to produce.
C. It breaks down easily in the sun.
D. It might cause health problems
4. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. There may be many other kinds of self-cleaning fabric in the future .
B. We can already buy self-cleaning clothes on the market.
C. This was the first time that scientists discovered titanium dioxide.
D. Titanium dioxide is widely used in the food industry.

THE first night in Yosemite had been awful. I hadn't been able to sleep and I was stuck in a too small
tent with my wife and two kids. "Things haven't worked out," I said to myself. But, like so many other
things I complain before my morning coffee, this one was ridiculously off-key. Things weren't bad;
they were good.
A hundred yards(91 meters) away was Summit Lake, with its wonderful early morning mists (薄雾)
shimmering (闪烁微光)off the water. A couple of miles to the southwest was the base of the Lassen
Peak Trail. The base was 8,000 feet (2,400 meters) above sea level, huge snow banks dotting (点缀)
the place even in mid August. It was beautiful. We fired up the camp stove, got out our cold boxes from
the heavy metal locker(储物柜),fired up some bacon, cut open some bread, and boiled up a cup of coffee.
Half an hour later, my 6-year-old daughter and I were in the parking lot of the Lassen Peak Trail,
getting ready to hike. We wouldn't make it all the way- young legs get pretty tired on a steep mountain
path, but it didn't matter. We would see great views spread out below us, the volcanic ash (火山灰) that
layered on the earth turning the melting snow a mysterious pink as the sun struck it.
Later, on the hike, I felt stupid about my morning complaints. Everything had been worthwhile. It gave me enormous satisfaction to see my daughter so excited about the view from the mountain.
Yes, camping is uncomfortable. But there's also something wonderful about being so close to nature.
Just as importantly, there's something about getting young children out of their increasingly
technology-filled comfort zones and forcing them to encounter the non-cyber (没有网络的)world
around them.
We lose something when we spend all our time cocooned (束缚) inside a carefully constructed
modernity, when read about daily affronts (冒犯) to the environment, yet don't fully realize what is at risk,
removed as we are from nature. It's a good thing to reconnect every so often with the Great
Outdoors.

Psychologists in Britain have said that the last full week of January is the most depressing time of year
and labeled next Monday "Blue Monday".   1
Mondays are generally seen as the worst day of the week because people feel tired at having to go
back to work after a weekend with a different sleep pattern. There are various reasons why more people
feel depressed at this time of year. Many people have unpaid credit card bills for the Christmas presents
they bought, and pay day is often not until the end of the month.
2  People feel stressed because they have to go back to real life--work and commuting (go to work
by bus); and they may be unhappy with their body image after bingeing (大吃大喝) on booze, chocolates, and other food at Christmas-time. People may have already failed in their New Year's resolutions, such
as give up smoking. The bad weather in January can also contribute to people feeling tired.
3  They offered advice for any staffs who are feeling depressed. They hope that helping people as
soon as there are signs of depression will avoid absenteeism(旷工).Evidence shows that unreasonable
managers who lead to their staff feeling tired at this time can expect an uncooperative workforce.
However, it's not all bad!   4   They think that things can only get better. Psychologists offer suggestions of how to avoid feeling blue. These include spending 15 minutes doing a "gratitude exercise" thinking about and writing down what you are grateful for, such as health, family, friends and so on. Taking up a new
hobby, doing some exercise, going to bed earlier, eating a healthy breakfast, and listening to some uplifting music, are all recommended as ways to feel more cheerful.
A. The party season is over.
B. Blue is a slang(俚语) way of saying unhappy.
C. Many people feel optimistic at this time.
D. People should plan better next December.
E. Some companies are taking this quite seriously
