   A Week ago, "Sports for Life" programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport
they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for
more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones:
   Sports 1: Basketball
   We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised
to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To
cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball
courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
   Sports 2: Gym
   We will be using St. Peter's Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is
not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has a lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students
must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping, jogging, outdoor
aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on
duty for each of the activities.
   Sports 3: Hiking. (远足)
   Hiking will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later.
Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15
hikers. Each instructor will cost $ 75/hr.
   Sports 4: Swimming
   The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the
pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour
(i.e. 2:45pm to 3:45pm). Only students skillful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have
two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.

     It doesn't matter when or how much a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive.
That's what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al Herpin, it was said, never slept.
Could this be true ? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.
     Al Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for
sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he
made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they
never saw Herpin sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.
     The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers.
The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They found only one answer that
might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured
several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one could be sure.
Herpin died at the age of 94.

      I want to let you know about an event that changed my life many years ago. We were living in
College Station, Texas and my wife and I were on our way home from Houston, Texas one Sunday
morning. We decided to stop at a local gas station to get something to eat since we had enough time.
      When we finished, we got back into our car and before I started it, we noticed a homeless man
standing in front of the building. His clothes were worn and it looked as if he didn't have any money.
It was cold and I was sure he wanted something to drink. However, it was not this that moved(感动)
me.
     A dog was also walking up to the front of the building. Being a dog lover, I noticed that the dog
was a mother and that she had just had some puppies(小狗). She was hungry and weak and I felt so
bad for her. I knew if she didn't eat soon, she and her puppies would not live on.

but she still deserved(值得) better. But we still did not do anything, someone else did. The homeless
man, who I thought could not afford anything to eat, went back into a store and bought dog food with
all the money he had.

     In December, 2010, many American newspapers publish a list of the best books of the year.
Freedom by Jonathan Franzen is one of the most repeatedly praised books on this year's list of
favorites. It tells about the ups and downs of the Berglund family over many years. Mr. Franzen
fills the book with sharp observations about American politics, culture and society.
     Jennifer Egan's book A Visit from the Goon and Squad takes place in 13 chapters over 40
years. The story moves back and forth in time, from different viewpoints. One main character is
former rock musician Bennie Salazar who works for a record company. The other main character
is a troubled young woman named Sasha who works for Bennie. The reader learns about their
past and those of their friends.
    The main character in The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman is a failing English language
newspaper publisher in Rome, Italy. Each chapter of the book tells about a reporter or editor
working for this paper. Their stories are filled with intelligence and great personality.
     Two of the most popular non-fiction books of 2010 were about rock and roll stars. Just
Kids is by rock singer Patti Smith. It tells about her friendship with the artist Robert Mapplethorpe
in the 1960s and 1970s before they became famous. Life is the autobiography of Rolling Stones
guitarist Keith Richards. It is an honest and exciting look at the development of rock and roll and
the wild times this famous band has experienced.
    Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand tells about a man named Louis Zamperini. She tells about his
extraordinary survival story after his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean during World War Two.
     Stacy Schiff has received great praise for her book Cleopatra: A Life. It tells about one of the
most misrepresented and famous women in history, Cleopatra. She ruled ancient Egypt about 2,000
years ago. One critic said Ms. Schiff has brought Cleopatra to life by unearthing her story from
centuries of lies.

     Traveling should be easy and enjoyable, and one of the ways to make sure your trip remains fun is
to know exactly how to keep your valuables safe.
      If you are traveling alone, distribute (分散) your money through your luggage. Place most of it in
a wallet and put the wallet in your main suitcase or bag. Make a rough estimate of how much money
you will need on the journey, till you reach your destination. Add, say, $100 to that. Place this money
in a different wallet and carry this in your pocket. Spend from this wallet till you get to your destination.

     Have you ever seen a mini backpack purse? It looks really fashionable and is very smart. Plus, it's
really convenient to use. The best thing to do is to sling(悬挂) the mini backpack purse in the front, like
a baby carrier. There are two big advantages to do this: one, your hands remain free to carry your
luggage and other things; and two, your purse is always monitored, and it is just under your nose.
     Credit cards are very useful in many ways. But if you misplace your credit card, it is quite easy for
someone else to find it and use it to his/her maximum benefit before you even realize you have lost it!
If you lose cash, you lose only that much cash as you are carrying. But a lost credit card means the
money in your bank account is lost. So always try to use cash instead of credit card while traveling.

      Jenny Bowen, an American living in Beijing, was selected as the only American to carry the 2008 Beijing
Olympic torch on Chinese soil. She and seven other non-Chinese winners had been chosen from 262 applicants
from 47 countries in a contest organized by Chinese computer maker Lenovo Group and the official English-
language newspaper, China Daily. When Bowen ran with the Olympic torch, she was not only representing the
United States, but also representing thousands of Chinese orphans (孤儿).
      Bowen, a mother of two adopted (收养) Chinese daughters, is director of Half the Sky Foundation, an
organization which was founded in 1998 and aims to enrich the lives of orphaned children in China. In nearly
10 years, Bowen and Half the Sky have touched the lives of over 13,000 children. Half the Sky is now present
in 36 welfare institutions in 28 Chinese cities. About 4,000 children are active in the program, which provides
trained staff, educational tools, medical support and care for orphans.
      Bowen hoped that running with the Olympic torch would help draw attention to the children in China. She
was among 19,400 runners who carried the flame along an 85,000-mile, 130-day route across five continents.
Beijing organizers say it was the longest torch relay in Olympic history.
      Like Bowen, the seven other non-Chinese winners, including a German engineer and a Venezuelan designer,
live in China. Other countries represented were the Philippines, Colombia, India, Japan and Russia.
      According to Olympic organizers, candidates (候选人) were selected based on an online vote, committee
selection, their "love of Chinese culture and history" and devotion to "communicating information of a real
China to their native countries". Each runner carried the torch for 200 meters on Chinese soil.

      People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial
expressions-and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
      Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly (均匀地) across
a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
      "We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,"
Jack said. "Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes
and neglect (忽略) the mouth."
      According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is
more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally
recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
      The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the
eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive
faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared
how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
      It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors
than did Westerners. "The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of
cultural difference in facial expressions," Jack said. "Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole
