     The name of Macau comes from the word Magao (A-Ma Temple), which were shrines (圣地)
dedicated to Mazu, a holy sea goddess worshiped by Macau people. It was said that when the Portuguese
people first came here in the middle of sixteenth century, one of the officers asked a fisherman the name
of the land. The man misunderstood the officer's question, and answered "Magao"- the name of A-Ma
Temple in front them.
     Many people wonder how Macau is spelled. Is it "Macao" or"Macau"? Both are actually correct. Macao
is Portuguese, and this is the official spelling backed by Macau SAR Government. Macau is English, that's
how they spell it in the U.S. and other parts of the world. However, most publications use"Macau" as the
preferred spelling.
     Members of the Southern Song Dynasty and some 50,000 followers were the first recorded inhabitants
(居民) of the area, seeking shelter in Macau from invading Mongols in 1277. They were able to defend
their settlements and establish themselves there.
     The Hoklo Boat people were the first to show commercial interest in Macau as a trading center for the
southern provinces. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1643), fishermen migrated to Macau from various
parts of Guangdong and Fujian provinces and built the A-Ma Temple in which they prayed for safety on
the sea.
     Chinese fishermen have been living and working in the Pearl River Delta for more than four thousand
years. The small peninsula and islands that came to be called Macau were first settled by the Portuguese in
the sixteenth century.
     In 1998, Chinese (Cantonese) was given official status and the same legal power as Portuguese, the
official language. The Chinese government assumed sovereignty over Macau on December 20, 1999, ending
329 years of Portuguese rule.

     Well before the 15th century, an Anglo-Saxon custom required that a prospective bridegroom break
some highly valued personal belonging. Half of the broken token was held by the father of the bride and
the other half by the groom. A wealthy man was expected to split a piece of gold or silver.
     The earliest engagement rings were also used as wedding rings, serving to seal an act of sale which

     Land Art, sometimes referred to as Earth Art or Earthworks, is a form of art which involves using physical
landscapes to create art, taking art out of the museum and into the outside world. Modern Land Art movement
really got going in the 1960s, when American artists began creating Land Art on a large scale (规模). Today,
works of modern Land Art can be seen all over the world, sometimes right alongside much older pieces of
Land Art created by people who lived thousands of years ago.
     Land art, which is not necessarily unchangeable, can take a number of forms. For example, in 1970 Robert

The American artist made a large jetty in a spiral shape which sticks out into the waters of the lake.
     Reshaping the landscape is a common characteristic of Land Art. It can be created by moving parts around. People can also add things to the environment to create Land Art, like salt, which is added to the Spiral Jetty. It
is possible to use plants. In all cases, Land Art is immovable.
     Land Art is designed to gradually form, change, and eventually decay (衰落). That's one of the biggest
differences between Land Art and most of the art one sees in the museums. Some works of art can exist only
for a few hours or days. Others are exposed to rain and wind so that they develop and decay over time, which
is part of the attractiveness in the eyes of the artists.

     The western alphabet, which is used in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Australia and New Zealand as well
as in other countries, originated in the Middle East. The people who gave the world this alphabet were the
Phoneacians, a people who established colonies all over the Mediterranean, including Carthage in Africa and

right of the Greek A becomes the horns of a little bull.
     Of course, the first two letters of the alphabet give it its name. Over the years there have been changes.
Latin developed an alphabet with some different letters to the Greeks, and other letters have been added since.
But really westerners are using the same system of writing which has served them so well for thousands of
years.

     Bright red post boxes, the Queen and queuing-what do they all have in common? They are all important
parts of British life. At least I thought so.
     However, the ability to queue for long periods of time, once believed to be a traditional characteristic of
the British, is no longer tolerated by people in the UK, according to a survey done for British bank Barclays.
     Once upon a time, queuing was seen as normal. During World WarⅡ, everyone had to queue up to receive
their daily supply of foods. In fact, if you didn't stand up and wait in line with all the others, it was seen as
uncivilized (不文明的).
     The famous English double-decker buses, with only one entrance, might also help explain why queuing was
seen as a part of British life. Almost always, there is queue to get on.
     But perhaps the British are tired of being pushed past by the Spanish, the Italians or the French as they
queue up to get a table at a restaurant. The people of these other European countries have more than one
entrance to their buses, which explains their more relaxed attitude to the queue.
     Two minutes is now the longest time most British people are prepared to stand and wait. But could it be that
the Internet, which allows us to carry out tasks quickly, is the main reason why British people are no longer
prepared to queue?
     "Used to buying without delay, customers are even giving up purchases rather than wait their turn," says
Stuart Neal of Barclaycard. "Shoppers are also less likely to queue for long if the item they are buying is of low
value."
     Perhaps I will have to replace "queuing" with"impatience" in my list of things I relate to the British.

     Almost everyone has read about the Taj Mahal in India. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. It is said that the Taj Mahal, like the Great Wall in China, is one of the seven wonders. in the world. Over three
hundred years ago, Shah Jehan built Taj Mahal as a tomb for his wife.  
     Shah Jehan wanted his wife' s tomb to be perfect. He did not care about time or money. He brought
together workmen from all Asia. Altogether, over 20,000 men worked on the building, and it took them over
seventeen years to finish it.
     The building rests on a platform of red sandstone. Four thin white towers rise from the corners of the
terrace(平台),a large dome (圆屋顶) rises from the center of the buildings. Around this large dome there are
four smaller domes.
     The building is made of fine white marbles. It has eight sides. There is an open corridor just inside the walls. From the corridor, the visitor looks through marble screen to a center room. The bodies of Shah Jehan and his wife lie in a tomb below this room.
     A beautiful garden surrounds the Taj Mahal. The green trees make the marble look even whiter. In front of
the main entrance to the building there is a long narrow pool. If you look in this pool, you can see all the
beautiful look of the Taj Mahal in the reflection from the water.
      Some people think the Taj Mahal is most beautiful at sunset. Then the marble picks up the color of sunset,
and the building and its reflection in the pool shines like jewels. Others like it best at noon when the bright sun
makes it clear and clean.
     Still others think it should be seen by moonlight. On nights when the moon is full, hundreds of people visit
the Taj Mahal and spend the night beside the pool. When morning comes and the Taj Mahal tums from silver to
gold in the early sunrise, they go away to retum, perhaps, when the moon is full again.
