     I had looked forward to this day for a long time. Finally I, Kirsty Stuart, would stand on the top of Mount
Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. Although I climbed often in my native Scotland, this was my first trip
to the Alps. My companions-Jean-Pierre Barton, Maurice Gautier, and Mary Sargent-and I left our camp early
and planned to reach the top by late morning.
     As we neared the top, large clouds gathered and it began to snow. We found shelter and decided to wait
for the snow to stop. After three hours, however, we decided to go back and try again the next day. We started
down the mountain in the thick snow. Jean-Pierre forgot his sunglasses and went back to look for them. As
he was returning to us, he started to fall. His fall started an avalanehe (雪崩) and it was falling towards us! I
was swept away by the heavy snow. Jean-Pierre hurried down to me. "Are you OK?" he asked.
     "I think I broke my leg," I answered.
    "I'd better radio for help!" he said."Where are the others?" We couldn't see Maurice or Mary anywhere.
     Jean-Pierre called the emergency radio number, and the police said they would send help right away. It
seemed like hours, but only minutes later we heard the welcome sound of a helicopter. The helicopter couldn't
land on the mountainside, so they lowered two men, two dogs and a stretcher (担架). One man ran to me, but
I told him to search for the others. The dogs were trained for avalanche rescue and soon began to dig crazily
in the snow.
     Bernardo, the lead dog, found Mary's scarf and led the rescuers to her. Maurice was nearby. The men gave
us hot drinks and warm blankets and then prepared to lift us into the helicopter. Two men inside the helicopter
pulled us up with the ropes. I went first on the stretcher.
     Once we were safely inside, the helicopter flew to the hospital in Chamonix Our poor rescuers and their
dogs had to climb all the way back down the mountain. Later we would find these brave men and thank them
for saving our lives.

     A primary school teacher who left a class of 25 pupils in tears after she told them Santa Claus did not
exist has been fired. When excited youngsters became rowdy as they talked a- bout Santa, the supply
teacher said out suddenly, "It's your parents who leave out presents on Christmas Day."
     The class of seven-year-olds at Blackshaw Lane Primary School, Royton, Greater Manchester burst in
to tears and told their parents when they arrived home. Mothers and fa- thers then complained about the
incident and were sent a letter by the school saying the teacher, who only worked at the school for one day
last week, has been punished.
     The school has now said it will not hire her again.
     One father said, "My son came home and said that his teacher had told the class that Santa doesn't
exist and it's their mum and dad that put out presents for them. Obviously, they were all talking about
Christmas and being a bit rowdy. She just came straight out with it. "
     "My son was in tears and so was everyone else in the class -- especially as it was so close to
Christmas. I thought it was wrong. He was crazy about it. He's only seven-year-old and it's part of the
magic of Christmas to him. "
     "We told him that she did not believe in Father Christmas because of her religion and he's fine now. "
     "The father described the incident as ' shocking' and believed it was done with malicious intent (恶意地). A lot of parents were angry and complained to the school. The teacher, who was supplied by
Rochdale and Oldham Supply Agency, is still listed and will work with other schools," the agency said.

     On the first day of my new high school, I almost had a nervous breakdown. Everything about the
school seemed so difficult. When I got home, my parents said, "You're nervous and that's okay. Everyone
is afraid of high school." I denied it. I wanted to be strong, so I refused to let anyone know about my fear, even my closest friends.
    On the first day I was late for every class and was constantly lost. The school seemed like a puzzle that
I couldn't figure out. Was this how the whole year was going to be? I didn't think I could rise to this

someone out with it! The schoolmates seemed to regard me as a fool, and they were probably right.

bad. It was actually much better than middle school and much more challenging.
    Since then, I've been elected vice monitor of my class, which wasn't much of a victory since only three
people ran for the four positions.
    It is normal to be scared about a new school. Take a deep breath and relax. High school is something
that any student can overcome. Make sure you participate in some outofclass activities because you'll find
it easier to make friends. Try to do your best, even if it isn't straight A's.
    Most important of all, be who you are, whether you're a "fool", an athlete, or a lower grader. Don't try
to pretend to be someone you're not. Now you know the true secrets of high school.

     A father's job is unique. If parents had job descriptions, mine would read: organize bills, play dates,
laundry, meals, carpool, snacks and outings. The only thing on my husband's description would be the
word "fun" written in big red letters along the top.
    Our parenting styles complement each other. His style is a nonstop adventure where no one has to
worry about washing their hands, or eating vegetables. I'm too busy worrying to be fun. Besides, every
time I try, I am constantly outdone by my husband.
    I bought my children bubble gumflavored toothpaste, and I taught them how to brush their teeth.  They

     Hand in hand, we walked by the stores. People smiled and nodded. Lots of smiling and nodding,
in fact. "I never realized there were so many friendly people as we have seen this evening, dear," I
observed.
     "Probably your new straw hat. Or the fact that you're such a handsome guy," she answered.
     We completed the walking tour past the store windows. After acknowledging many smiles, we
found ourselves back at the restaurant, looking at our reflection in the window. It was then that I saw
the reason for all the smiles.

                                                                  A Divine Plan
    At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learningdisabled children, the father of one student
delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by those who attended. He began with a question.
"Everything God does is done with perfection. Yet, my son, Shay, cannot learn and understand things
as other children do. Where is God's plan reflected in my son?"
    The audience was stilled by the question. The father continued,"I believe that when God brings a child

     Recently a young fellow from Sheridan was accused of first-degree murder. The youth was
15 years old when he shot and killed a 79-year-old man while burglarizing (入室盗窃)the man's
home. The victim was a well-respected and much loved Sheridan citizen.
     The crime and punishment are tragedies. It was a tragedy that a wonderful citizen of the city
was shot and killed in his bedroom in the middle of the night. It is another tragedy that the young
man, now 17, will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.
     His mother had largely neglected the young man. Suffering an unhappy marriage life, his mother
sent him to live with an aunt and uncle in Sheridan. The youth really had no activities other than
skateboarding at the skate park.  The circle of friends that the youth had was basically in 1he same
boat: they had little parental love and care in their lives.
     I wonder what would have happened to the young fellow if he had been introduced to the joys
of the outdoors at an early age. Perhaps his life would have taken a different course. Many of us
have learned our outdoor skills by observing our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, or some
other adults. Basically, the people who taught us cared for us and wanted to get us interested in
their outdoor activities.
     Parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends of the family need to do the same thing today. We
need to educate our children in outdoor skills. We need to teach them by taking them fishing, hunting,
hiking, birding, horseback riding, and swimming. Most of all, we need to spend time with our children
and show them we care.
     We need to give our youths some healthy outdoor alternatives to the drug and troublemaking culture
that results from too little supervision and too little love. By doing so, perhaps we can avoid further
tragedies.
