My father and I were very close. I loved pleasing him, and he was always proud of my
success. If I won a spelling contest at school, he was on top of the world. Later in life whenever I
got a promotion(提升), I'd call my father right away and he'd rush out to tell all his friends. In
1970, when I was named president of the Ford Motor Company, I don't know which of us was
more excited.
     Like many native Italians, my parents were very open with their feelings and their loves not

     I just experienced a moment that turned my entire day around. I went to the cafeteria today
to buy my lunch. However, when I entered the line and was ready to take out money, I realized I
forgot to take the purse with me. I dug through different parts of my bag, looking for small

     A woman joyfully paid for my entire meal and I was grateful. I learned from her that we
should give without expecting anything in turn, even "Thanks".

     A 69yearold grandmother with  no teeth of her own has eventually won a long legal  battle to stop

of diseases, including cancer.
     The judge, however, concluded that there was no evidence  to suggest that the inclusion of fluoride
in the water supply would have had a negative effect on public health. Although the chemical might serve
as an efficient and convenient means of achieving a beneficial effect on  the dental health of consumers
generally, he said, and its  use was greatly favoured by the dental profession, he  could also understand
why some members of the public, Mrs McColl in particular, might be passionately opposed  to the
action of the Water Authority in assuming the  right to improve public wellbeing without consulting the
public in the first case. The Authority's legal duty to provide“wholesome” water for public consumption
which was both safe and pleasant to drink, did not, he said, extend to their right to safeguard public
health by chemical means.

     Brave Frenchman Found Halfway Around the World
     (NEW YORK)A French tourist highly praised for rescuing a twoyearold girl in Manhattan said he
didn't think twice before diving into the freezing East River.
    Tuesday's Daily News said 29yearold Julien Duret from France is the man who left the spot quickly
after the rescue last Saturday.
    He lifted the little girl out of the water after she fell off the bank at the South Street Seaport museum.
He handed the girl to her father, David Anderson, who had dived in after him.
    “I didn't think at all, ”Duret told the Daily News.“It happened very fast.I reacted very fast.”
  Duret, an engineer on vacation, was walking with his girlfriend along the pier(码头)when he saw
something falling into the water.He thought it was a doll, but realized it was a child when he approached
the river.In an instant, he took off his coat and jumped into the water.
    When he reached the girl, she appeared lifeless, he said.Fortunately, when she was out of the water,
she opened her eyes.
    Anderson said his daughter slipped off the bank when he was adjusting his camera.An ambulance

      Recently, one of my best friends, whom I've shared just about everything with since the first day
of kindergarten, spent the weekend with me. Since I moved to a new town several years ago, we've
both always looked forward to the few times a year when we can see each other.
     Over the weekend, we spent hours and hours, staying up late into the night, talking about the people
she was hanging around with. She started telling me stories about her new boyfriend, about how he
experimented with drugs and was into other selfdestructive behaviour. I was blown away! She told me
how she had been lying to her parents about where she was going and even stealing out to see this guy
because they didn't want her around him. No matter how hard I tried to tell her that she deserved better,
she didn't believe me. Her selfrespect seemed to have disappeared.
     I tried to convince her that she was ruining her future and heading for big trouble. I felt like I was  
getting nowhere. I just couldn't believe that she really  thought it was acceptable to hang out with a bunch
of losers, especially her boyfriend.
     By the time she left, I was really worried about her and exhausted by the experience. It had been so
frustrating, I had come close to telling her several times during the weekend that maybe we had just
grown too far apart to continue our friendship, but I didn't. I put the power of friendship to the final test.
We'd been friends for far too long. I had to hope that she valued me enough to know that I was trying to
save her from hurting herself. I wanted to believe that our friendship could conquer anything.
     A few days later, she called to say that she had thought long and hard about our conversation, and
then she told me that she had broken up with her boyfriend. I just listened on the other end of the phone
with tears of joy running down my face. It was one of the truly rewarding moments in my life. Never had
I been so proud of a friend.
