My wife passed away a few years ago, and I went through the worst time in my life. I even wanted to
kill myself. Just for kids, I had to continue to live and work as small-town doctor at my medical clinic in
Hawaii. My kids had gone to live on the mainland, and I was alone. Then they asked me to have a family trip.
On our trip, we turned on the TV at the motel and saw the second plane crash into the World Trade
Center. Seeing it falling down, I said to my kids:"I'm going to Afghanistan". And a few weeks later,
international Medical Corps sent me to set up 20 clinics in provinces where people had no health care.
In these field clinics surrounded by frightening shoots or deadly bombs, we were eventually serving
27,000 patients a month in a very busy schedule. Tired and nervous, I gradually had a sense of achievement,
a sense of purpose, and my depression went away. In the years to follow, I went to Indonesia after the
tsunami, Pakistan after the earthquakes, Sudan after the civil warm and Iraq after more and more bombs.
Each time after disasters one after another, hundreds of people were killed, wounded and many more had to
flee. We once set up movable clinics in an area with 19,000 refugees, and it was supposed to hold 13,000
originally. Flu broke out, one of the biggest killers of kids in refugee camps, and it spread like wildfire. Water
and food were also serious problems."Adventures or not?" I often asked myself.
When my wife passed away, I thought my life was done. But in reality, it was just getting started. At the
end of her life, she went unconscious. I held her head in my hands and told her of all the places we would
visit and the exciting adventures we would have.
I think about the moment many times during my "adventures". I didn't know how predictive those words
would be. But I know that she is still with me.
1. Where has the doctor been in the past few years?
A. Some countries where he could set up clinics.
B. Some African countries where flu broke out.
C. The places where the earthquakes happened.
D. The places that the horrible disasters struck.
2. How would the doctor describe his life after he had worked in Afghanistan?
A. Tired and troublesome.
B. Busy and risky.
C. Meaningful and helpful
D. Frightening and depressing.
3. The underlined word "refugees" means people ______.
A. who are robbed, killed, or wounded
B. who suffer from flu in movable clinics
C. who like to take adventures
D. who have lost homes because of disasters.
4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. the doctor's wife encouraged him to work in foreign countries.
B. What the doctor said to his wife before her death became reality.
C. The doctor's adventures made him understand the love of his wife.
D. With the true love of his wife, the doctor started to change his life.

One summer my friend and I decided to go to Italy for a
holiday and we decided to travel there without going through a
travel agency.  You know, you would be submerged (淹没) in
crowds of tourists and lose lots of opportunities to get familiar with
the country more closely. We started to think over our trip and
managed to come up with a free tour of Italy.
The trip was not very long but it was still very impressive (印
象深刻的).  We look forward to going there again !  Of course, we
spent lots of time arranging (安排) the trip, but it was well worth
it !  Of course I was afraid that something would go wrong and I was
especially anxious about my visa, but everything went quite
smoothly in the end.
The most difficult part was getting a visa (签证)  without an
invitation.  In the Italian consulate (领事馆) , one must hand in
some official paper proving that one has a hotel booked for oneself
in order to get the visa. Then we had to solve the ticket problem.
Airlines often sell cheap tickets and we bought ours far in
advance. The next step was to book a hotel. We finally booked a
hotel about 30km away from the heart of Rome and it was the
perfect choice for our trip.
Every day we took a train that carried us to the heart of
Rome. Our big house, which was surrounded by the forest, was a
rare place for the fresh air and absolute silence, beautiful views,
hospitable hosts, comfortable living conditions delighting us to no
end. Besides this, we were very lucky that our mistress was a
Russian. She gave us a lot of advice that was of great use. She
told us what transport to choose and where the best places to go.
Don't be afraid to arrange your trip by yourself. It's not
difficult ! The only thing I'll say right now is that we really enjoyed
traveling by ourselves. We walked with a map and a guide-book to
wherever we wanted and we even met some of our fellow
countrymen on the way just two or three times. So, if you're also
planning a "single" trip, don't forget to take a Russian-Italian
phrasebook as people in Italy prefer to speak in their native
tongue.
1. Why does the author want to go to Italy again?
A. He had a great time there.
B. Italy has a lot of attractions.
C. His friend invited him there.
D. He didn't stay in Italy long enough.
2. What does the author think was the hardest in preparing for his Italian trip?
A. Buying cheap airline tickets to Italy before the traveling.
B. Getting a visa without an invitation from the Italian consulate.
C. Booking a comfortable hotel on his own in Rome.
D. Solving the ticket problem far in advance.
3. In the fourth paragraph the author mainly explains ____ .

A. the reason why he chose to live in the center of Rome
B. the reason why the hotel he booked was the right choice
C. what transport they chose to travel in their Italian trip
D. the reason why the mistress gave them some advice

When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother's Chinese English. Because of her
English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not
take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they
did not hear her.
My mother has long realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to
have me call people on the phone to pretend I was she. I was foxed to ask for information or even to yell
at people who had been rode to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票经纪人). I said in an
adolescent voice that was not very convincing, "This is Mrs. Tan."
And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, "Why he don't send me cheek, already two
week late."
And then, in perfect English I said, "I'm getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two
weeks ago, but it hasn't arrived."
Then she talked more loudly. "What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss." And so
I turned to the stockbroker again, "I can't tolerate any more excuse. If I don't receive the cheek immediately,
I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week."
The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs.
Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English.
When I was a teenager, my mother's broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To
me, my mother's English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I
hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way
I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.
1. Why was the author's mother poorly served?
A. She was unable to speak good English.
B. She was often misunderstood.
C. She was not clearly heard.
D. She was not very polite.
2. From Paragraph 2, we know that the author was _____.
A. good at pretending
B. rode to the stockbroker
C. ready to help her mother
D. unwilling to phone for her mother
3. After the author made the phone call, _____.
A. they forgave the stockbroker
B. they failed to get the check
C. they went to New York immediately
D. they spoke to their boss at once
4. What does the author think of her mother's English now?
A. It confuses her.
B. It embarrasses her.
C. It helps her understand the world.
D. It helps her tolerate rude people.
5. We can infer from the passage that Chinese English _____.
A. is clear and natural to non-native speakers
B. is vivid and direct to non-native speakers
C. has a very bad reputation in America
D. may bring inconvenience in America

Many years ago, , when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, , I was driving to my
parents' home in Missouri for Christmas.I stopped at a gas station(加油站) about 50 miles from
Oklahoma City, , where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the
cash register(收款台), , I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took_off, , but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car.I
stopped and wondered what I should do.A car pulled up behind me.It was the couple I had spoken
to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's.We chatted on the way into the city,
and when I got out of the car, , the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thankyou note for helping me.Soon afterward, , I received a Christmas
present from them.Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, , I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my
car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, , and the battery(电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the
Friendly Ford dealership-a shop selling cars-was right next door.I walked over and found two salesmen

When I was 17 years old I had surgery because of a disease. The day after the surgery, I
awoke to find a friend of mine sitting in a chair across from my bed. I don't remember much
about his visit. But I will not forget that he visited me on that day, and sat there for I don't know
how long, while I was under the influence of a morphine drip(输液). We benefit greatly from
our close friendships, but they are not a matter of calculable gain or loss.
Our age, what we might call the age of economics, is strongly influenced by two types of
relationships that reflect the lives we are encouraged to lead. There are consumer relationships,
those that we participate in for the pleasure they bring us. They are focused on the present. It is
what brings immediate pleasure that matters. And there are entrepreneurial(商业的)relationships,
those that we invest in, hoping they will bring us some return.
Aristotle thought that there were three types of friendship: those of pleasure, those of usefulness,
and true friendship. In pleasure friendships, he said, "It is not for their character that men love
ready-witted people, but because they find them pleasant." About the usefulness friendships, he
said, "Those who love each other for their utility(效用)do not love each other for themselves, but
because of some good which they get from each other."
Although we benefit from our close friendships, these friendships are not a matter of calculable
gain and loss. Consumer pleasures are lasting for only a limited time. They surround us for a short
period and then they fade, like a drug. Entrepreneur friendship, when successful, leads to the victory
of personal gain.
It is precisely this non-economic character that is threatened in a society in which each of us is
offered only the choices of ownership, shopping, competition and growth. It is threatened when we
are led to believe that friendships without obvious recognizable gain are, in the economic sense,
irrational(不合理的). Friendships are not without reason, perhaps, but they are certainly without
that particular reason. Shared experience, not just everyday amusement or advancement, is the true
basis of friendship.
