11．Black boxes（黑匣子） are special instruments．They are mainly used on planes to record all in-flight information．They are the most important tools to help people find out the reasons of air accidents．
A plane often carries two black boxes-the Digital Flight Data Recorder which can record data about the speed，direction，while the Cockpit Voice Recorder keeps conversations and other sounds in the pilots'cabin （驾驶舱）．
They are wrapped （包裹） with thick steal and other special materials that can stop high temperature．They often are placed on the tails of planes，which are considered the safest places of planes，so that they can't be destroyed badly when air accidents happen．
They are not black，instead，they are colored orange to make them easy to see．Because the instruments are often burned and turned into black after air accidents，people often call them black boxes．
They can survive （幸存） in as deep as 6，000meters underwater or a very high temperature-one hour at 1，100degrees centigrade．They can send signs for one month so that people can find them．
