An earthquake happened in Bam（伊朗的巴姆市） on December 26, 2003. About 30,000 people were killed and more were injured. Many of those killed by the earthquake died only because of poor building methods and a lack of proper regulation.
In Iran, as in many developing countries, earthquake that ought to be survivable（不致命的）often bring human disaster because buildings collapse (倒塌) on top of people. Two days before Christmas, California was struck by an earthquake similar in magnitude (强度) to the one that hit Iran Saturday, but only three people died, thanks largely to safer construction methods. A quake measuring 8.0 caused just 500 injuries and no deaths in Japan in September 2003.
Bam, however, was a disaster waiting to happen. Efforts to bring industrial development to what was a backward agricultural area caused a population boom (激增)and a shortage of housing, which local builders tried to meet with cheap homes, or by adding extra floors to existing houses. Many buildings collapse [even] without earthquakes, because of the poor construction.

Lots of teenagers are trying to enter a university by coping stories and phrases from the internet to fill out their personal statements in Britain. Personal statements are used to show what can make applicants （申请）different as they outline their interests and reasons for studying a particular course. But it seems that some ideas and words are alike, even the same, thanks to an internet site designed to help those who don’t know what to write about themselves. A study found that nearly 800 applications had personal statements containing phrases taken from three online examples. The study, which involved examining 50,000 personal statements, found that 5% used the material from the internet, most from one free website. Borrowed material was most likely to appear at the end of a statement or where the applicant described the reasons for wanting to study a subject. Almost all applications are now completed online, but the new evidence of Internet temptation（诱惑）follow concern that teenagers are cutting and pasting material for A-level coursework(课程作业). A spokesman said later that he and his partners were looking for ways examine whether people appeared to be copying material.

A Thirsty World
Three-fourths of the earth’s surface is covered by water, some of which is frozen and most of which is salty. In fact, less than one percent left for all the living things.
Now fresh water is becoming scare, but more and more is needed because of the increasing number of people. Some industries also use amounts of fresh water in the production of things such as steel, paper, and rubber. These factories have polluted water flow into rivers without making it clean. What’s more, people in the city have much dirtied water piped into ditches after cooking every day.
Scientists estimate that the need for fresh water will have doubled by the year 2003. This means that we must find new ways of saving it or producing it. Some nations have worked on the problem and are already sharing their information with others. They are trying to keep their rivers from being polluted. Deep wells are also being dug, and rainwater is being collected in huge artificial lakes. In one way or another, they hope to provide enough water to satisfy the needs of their people. For example, one important wayof producing water is to distill(用蒸馏法提取) it from sea water. After the salt has been removed, sea water can be used not only for drinking but also for industry and irrigation. However, the equipment for distillation process is very expensive. Distilled water might be as dear as gold if pollution goes on.
