More Than I Had Dreamed Of
From the time I was seven, I had a dream of becoming a member of the Students Union. I always 36  my school leaders for taking responsibility for all of us. So I dreamed of being a leader.
Years flew by, and soon I was able to participate in the elections,   37  I would win. But the reality struck that I hadn’t had a chance. I wasn’t pretty. Girls across the school hardly knew me. I just did not have what it   38  to win a school election. I was   39 .
As I cried in my room that evening, I   40  took a deep breath and decided I wouldn’t stop dreaming. I decided that I would   41  elections again in my final year at school—and I would win.
I recognized that my   42  had a lot of things in their favor. What were the   43  that would work in my favor? I had good grades, and I was friendly and helpful. And my biggest   44  was the faith I had. I would not allow my   45  appearance to hold me back from putting my best foot forward. That evening, I   46  my election plans a whole year in advance.
I realized that girls would have to get to know me and recognize that I had the ability to   47  them. I loved making friends and I liked being helpful,   48  I decided that perhaps I could use these qualities to work to my advantage. In order to learn how to present a great election   49 , I also attended a course on effective public speaking.
The day after the election, when the principal(校长) announced I won the second highest number of votes, the students   50 . That joy on the faces of all my friends showed me that my victory was    51  theirs.
Suddenly, I realized that I had   52  much more than I had dreamed of. I had made many new friends and had helped people   53  the way. I had won the   54  and love of my school-mates and they knew me as somebody who would stand by them. I was able to put a smile on their faces and    55  their day.

After attending a conference, I returned to my hotel room late one evening. The overhead light out- side my door was burned out and I had  36 finding the keyhole. When I   37  to open the door, I 38  around the wall for a light switch.I found a plate where a switch was   39  installed… but no switch!
Not discouraged easily, I remembered   40   a lamp by the bed when I deposited my luggage 41   in the day.I found the bed in the    42   and then the lamp, but when I switched it on ,nothing   43  ! That evening I discovered in a whole new way just how dark the world   48  be and how-necessary light is! My wife and I used to feel that it was impossible to be a true friend to someone whose name we didn’t know. How wrong we were! Years of Sunday-morning bus trips through the city with the same group of “nameless” people have changed our thinking. Before the bus takes off, we all join in a conversation: where’s the silent woman who sits up front and never responds to our cheery greetings? Here she comes. Her worn clothing suggests she doesn’t have much money to spare, but she always takes an extra cup of coffee for the driver.
We get smiles from a Mexican couple as they get on the bus hand in hand. When they get off, they’re still holding hands. The woman was pregnant late last year, and one day her change of shape confirmed that she’d delivered the child. We even felt a little pride at the thought of our extended family.
For many months, our only sadness lay in our inability to establish the same friendship with the silent woman at the front of the bus. Then, one evening, we went to a fish restaurant. We were shown to a table alongside someone sitting alone. It was the woman from the bus.
We greeted her with friendly familiarity we’d shown all year, but this time her face softened, then a shy smile. When she spoke, the words escaped awkwardly from her lips. All at once we realized why she hadn’t spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her.
Over dinner; we learned the stay of a single mother with a disabled son who was receiving special care away from home. She missed him desperately, she explained.
“I love him… and he loves me, even though he doesn’t express it very well,” she murmured. “Lots of us have that problem, don’t we? We don’t say what we want to say, what we should be saying. And that’s not good enough.”The candles flared on our tables. Our fish had never tasted better. But the atmosphere grew pleasant, and when we parted as friends—we shared names.

When Julie was a child, she was a very big fan of animals. As a result, 36 she ever heard growing up was “Julie, you should be a vet. You’re going to be a great vet. That’s what you should do.”  37  when she got to the Ohio State University, she started studying to be a vet.

Away from the family  39  back home, she found herself one day sitting at her desk, surrounded by biology books and staring out the window, when it suddenly hit her: “I’m in total  40 . And then it hit her—it was all of the youth leadership conferences that she had volunteered  42 , and the communications and leadership courses she had taken as elective courses back at Ohio State. “How could I have been so  43 ? Some years ago I was offered a writing assignment that would require three months of travel through Europe. I had been abroad a couple of times, but I could hardly claim to know my way around the continent. Moreover, my knowledge of foreign languages was limited to a little college French.
I hesitated. How would I, unable to speak the language, totally unfamiliar with local geography or transportation systems, set up interviews and do research? It seemed impossible, and with considerable regret. I sat down to write a letter begging off. Halfway through, a thought ran through my mind: you can't learn if you don't try. So I accepted the assignment.
There were some bad moments. But by the time I had finished the trip I was an experienced traveler. And ever since,I have never hesitated to head for even the most remote of places, without guides or even advanced bookings, confident that somehow I will manage.
The point is that the new, the different, is almost scary by definition. But each time you try something, you learn, and as the learning piles up, the world opens to you.
I've learned to ski at 40, and flown up the Rhine River in a balloon. And I know I'll go on doing such things. It's not because I'm braver or more daring than others. I'm not. But I'll accept anxiety as another name for challenge and I believe I can accomplish wonders.

It was the last day of the final examination in a large eastern university. On the steps of one building, a group of engineering students were talking about the exam that was going to begin in a few  36 . On their faces was confidence . This was their last exam — then on to 37 and jobs.
Some talked of jobs they already had; others talked of jobs they 38 get. With the certainty of four years of college, they felt ready and able to take 39 of the world.
The coming exam, they knew, would be a(n)  40 task. The professor had said they could bring  41 books or notes they wanted, requesting only that they did not 42 each other, during the test.
43 they entered the classroom. The professor passed out the papers. And smiles 44 on the students’ faces as they noted(注意到) there were only five essay-type questions.
Three hours had passed 45 the professor began to collect the papers. The students no longer looked confident. On their faces was a frightened expression. Papers in hand, no one spoke as the professor faced the class.
He looked at the 46 faces before him, and then asked, “How many completed all five questions?” 47 a hand was raised.
“How many answered four?” Still no hands.
“Three? Two?” The students moved restlessly (不安地,慌张地)in their seats.
“One, then? Certainly somebody finished 48 .”But the class remained silent.
The professor put down the papers. “That is exactly what I 49 ,” he said. “I just want to impress upon you that,   50 you have completed four years of engineering, there are still many things about the   51 you don’t know. These questions you couldn’t answer are relatively(相对地,相当地)  52 in everyday practice. ” Then smiling, he added, “You will all  53 this course, but remember — even though you are now college graduates, your education has just  54 .”
The years have 55  the name of this professor, but not the lesson he taught.

We arrived in Spain for the first time a few weeks ago. I decided to   31  a car because we had sold the one we had in England before   32  home. Yesterday the sales office rang us to say the car was   33  . I had tried out a model like it before, but as I was not yet   34    driving in this city, my wife did not want me to collect it   35  so we went together to   36    it. We paid for the car and     37  the papers. They told us that there was   38  petrol(汽油)to take us to a garage, where we could fill up. I got out of   42    as fast as I could by backing into the garage   43    and the man behind  44  me.

Once Dr. Mellinkoff invited me to join him at the hospital to discuss interesting cases(案例, 病例) with his  students. The case at hand was a Guatemalan man, aged 34, who had a fever and many other medical problems. His condition was not improving, and there was not much hope he would live.
Dr.: Mellinkoff asked to see the patient. He introduced himself in Spanish and, in a very gentle voice, asked how he felt. The patient smiled and said everything was all right. Then the doctor asked if he was able to eat.The patient said that he had no desire to eat.
"Are you getting food you like?"
The patient said nothing.
"Do you get the kind of food you have at home?"
The answer was no.
The doctor put his hand on the man's shoulder and his voice was very soft.
"If you had food that you liked, would you eat it?"
"Yes, yes," the patient said.
The change in the patient's appearance couldn't have been more obvious.Nothing was said, but it was easy to tell that a message had been sent and had also been received.
Later, the doctor asked why the Guatemalan man wasn't getting food he could eat.One of the students said, "We all know how difficult it is to get the kitchen to make special meals."
"Suppose," the doctor replied, "you felt a certain medicine was absolutely necessary but that our hospital didn't carry it, would you accept defeat or would you insist the hospital meet your request?"
"I would probably insist," the student said.
"Very well," the doctor said."You might want to try the same method in the kitchen. It won't be-easy, but I can help you.Meanwhile, let's get some food inside this man as fast as possible, and stay with it.Or he'll be killed by hunger.By the way, there must be someone among you who can speak Spanish. If we want to make real progress, we need to be able to talk with him."
Three weeks later.Doctor Mellinkoff told me that the Guatemalan man had left the hospital under his own power. It takes more than medicine to help sick people; you also have to talk to them and make them comfortable.

We were driving along the village of Simdara. I  36  to my right and saw an old shelter 20 meters from the side of the road that appeared to be filled with  37 .
“Would you mind  38 ?”  I asked the driver Waris. “I think there is a(n)  39 .”
Waris laughed. “No, Greg, that’s actually a public toilet,” explained Waris and he kept  40 .
“But why are there so many kids? What are they doing there? We need to  41 ,” I insisted. The word caught Waris  42  and he stopped the car.
When we reached the shelter, to my surprise, it was  43  a toilet—or at least it had been at one time. The roof was gone now, and the four toilet pits (坑) had been  44  with old boards. There were 25 children between 4 and 5 years old, one  45 , and a wooden board against the wall.
Though having a tough learning environment, the students are quite  46  to chat with us about their class and curriculum (课程). After about ten minutes, the teacher  47  if we might like to see “the rest of the school”. We  48  and followed her up the hill.
Just over the top of the hill, there was an old tent. It was very  49  inside because nearly 100 students were packed like sardines (沙丁鱼). These students were a little  50  , fourth-, and sixth-graders, and all of them were sitting on the ground.  51  the teacher, they were doing extremely well —  52  most of them had no books, paper or even pencils.
We were forced to  53  to catch our plane. We were all  54  and decided to collect money to build a school for these children who had a hunger for  55 .
