阅读理解Every summer many people try to swim across the English Channel. The shortest distance is only about twenty miles (one mile is about 1.6km) , but because of the strong currents , the distance that must be swum is usually more than twice as far.
The strong currents from the Atlantic Ocean divides in two before it passes round the British Isles. One goes round the north of Scotland , then into the North Sea, and then south, towards the Dutch and Belgian coasts. The other goes up the English Channel. They meet at Thames estuary(泰晤士河口)and make the swimmers impossible to swim in a straight line across the Channel.
The first man who succeeded in swimming the Channel was Captain Webb, an Englishman. This was in August 1875.He landed in France 21 hours 45 minutes after he started at Dover.Since then there have been many successful swimmers and time has been shortened. One French swimmer crossed in 11 hours and 5 minutes. In 1960 a Canadian crossed in 10 hours and 23 minutes , thus, making a record.
