China is one of the biggest countries in the world. Its area is not so large as that of the Soviet Union or that of Canada, but it is larger than that of the United States. Its population is the largest in the world, up to more than 1,000,000,000. China is an ancient country with a long history of nearly five thousand years. Since liberation in 1949, the old country has taken on a new look, and the days when the Chinese people were slaves are gone forever. Led by the Party, the Chinese People are working hard to build the country into a rich and strong socialist one. On July, 1st, 1997 Hong Kong returned to our motherland. On December 20th, 1999, Macao returned to our country, too. We are looking forward to Taiwan's return. |
