      Young athletes from around the world will soon get their chance at Olympic gold. The International
Olympic Committee ( IOC ) voted Thursday to host the first-ever Youth Olympics.
     The Summer Games are planned to stage in August of 2010. The 12-day competition will feature
3,200 kids between the ages of 14 and 18. The Winter Games will be held in 2012 and are expected to
attract 1,000 athletes. Both games will take place every four years.
     Seeing the rise in childhood fatness, IOC president Jacques Rogge said he hopes the competitions will encourage young people to get off the couch and get into shape. Rogge also admitted that the IOC is
looking to pull in a younger television audience to the Olympics.
      In recent years, interest in the games among young people has fallen, with the average age of Olympic viewers on the rise. Rogge admitted that kids today are more interested in flashier( 浮华的 ) athletic
sports like the X Games, which stand for such sports as BMX freestyle, surfing, and Moto X Racing.
      The Olympics have tried to keep up with the competition by adding BMX-cross cycling, ski cross,
and snowboarding to the program. And the IOC is hoping to strengthen its fame among teens by adding
skateboarding in the 2012 London Olympics.
      The Youth Olympics are the IOC's latest attempt to draw the attention of young viewers. "Just as the
IOC has known, over our 100-plus years of living, how to move with the times---so we must now adapt
to meet the taste of today's young generation," he said.

     A new book claims to have definitive evidence of a long-suspected technological crime-that Alexander
Graham Bell stole ideas for the telephone from a competitor, Elisha Gray.
     In The Telephone Gambit:Chasing Alexander Graham Bell's Secret,journalist Seth Shulman argues
that Bell-aided by aggressive lawyers and a corrupt patent examiner-got an improper glance at patent
documents Gray had filed,and that Bell was incorrectly credited with filing first.
     Shulman believes the smoking gun is Bell's lab notebook,which was limited by Bell's family until 1976,

     Shulman's book describes other elements that have angered researchers' suspicions. For instance,Bell's
transmitter design appears hastily(草率地) written in the margin of his patent; Bell was nervous about
demonstrating his device with Gray present; Bell resisted testifying(作证) in an 1878 lawsuit solving this
question; and Bell,as if ashamed,quickly distanced himself from the telephone patent right bearing his name.
     Perhaps the most instructive lesson comes when Shulman explores why historical memory has favoured
Bell but not Gray-nor German inventor Philipp Reis.who beat them both with 1860s telephones that
employed a different principle.

     The dream of getting into an American university is coming true for more and more Chinese students.
Last year almost forty thousand Chinese students were accepted into undergraduate programs in America. That was a fifty percent increase over the year before and four times the number of undergraduate
students just five years ago.
     More Chinese students want to go to American universities and more American universities want them
to come. For Chinese students it's a chance to get a good education and for American universities it's a
chance to, well, make a lot of money. American universities received $26 billion in tuition fees from
International students last year. It's an important part of their revenue. The tuition fees for foreign students
are far higher than for domestic students. For example, the State University of New York (SUNY)
charges local students less than $5,000 a year and foreign students more than $13,000 a year.
     Places like SUNY are easy to get into. They don't look too closely at your academic record and they

courses, attend lectures, participate in seminars, write essays and give presentations-all in English! The
professors don't change their teaching styles and will not lower their standards to accommodate foreign
students.
     Many Chinese students struggle to keep up with the workload. Some drop out and about five percent
fail and have to come back home. It's not surprising because getting a degree from an American university
is difficult even for American students. Only slightly more than fifty percent of American students graduate
in four years from the university they enrolled in. Some will take five or six years to get the credits they
need to graduate. Chinese students work much harder than their American counterparts but language is a

                                 Students and Technology in the Classroom
     I love my Blackberry-it's my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also
love my laptop computer, as it holds all of my writing and thought. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices(设备)and truly communicate with
others.
     On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My
goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to
thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom. I have a rule -no
laptops, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were
not happy.
     Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with
students misusing technology. There's a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. There's no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversions and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students
to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently
and to make connections between the course the material and the class discussion.
     I've been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the educations reflect student
satisfaction with the environment that I create .Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge,
they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.
     I'm not saying that I won't ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I
hear a really good reason for the change. I'm sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue
is just too sweet to give up.

development when they were three years old.Also,  the researchers observed the women for signs of
depression.
     The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not
suffer from depression.The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and

researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their
