I still don't believe in ghosts (麹) even after my experience at the Rose Inn. 1 I have never seen one. But ghost stories have made me feel 2 since then I arrived at the inn late at night and asked the landlord for a room.

  ^There's nothing left, ̄ he said, ^ 3 you'd like to sleep in Number 7. ̄

  ^Why not? ̄ I said, ^What's 4 it? ̄ I was 5 that I would have slept 6 .

^Nothing. ̄ he said slowly, ^But something happened there a few months ago. ̄

Every old inn has its strange stories, so I thought that 7 he told me about it, the better. I was willing to listen to anything for a bed to 8 .

^A man came here late at night, 9 you, ̄ the landlord said. ^I thought there was something strange about him because he kept 10 his shoulder while he was signing his name in the book. He asked me 11 room he could have and I offered him No. 7.` 12 a man who has said he'll 13 me,¨ he said suddenly, `with a knife.¨ He looked so frightened that I thought I had better 14 him to his room. I locked the door and left him 15 . The next day we found him dead, with a knife beside him. He had cut his throat. ̄ the landlord said. ^Or 16 had done it. Do you 17 sleeping there now you know the story? ̄

^Well, ̄I said. ^No one is 18 me. But I wish you had told me the story 19 . As it is, I'll sleep here on the floor in the bar if you've a couple of 20 . ̄

For eighty-four days the old man did not catch any fish. People said that he was 1. But the old man still 2 the sea. He was 3 strong and a good 4. 5 the eighty-fifth day the old man sailed 6 out to sea than any of 7 boats. He sailed to the 8 where the water was very deep. Then he felt his fishing line 9 gently by a big fish which was swimming very 10 in the water.

The fish was so powerful 11 it pulled the boat after it. It took the small boat far 12 to sea. The old man could 13 see the land.

"Fish," he said softly, 14 "I'll stay with you 15 I am dead." The old man pulled the line a little 16, but he did not dare to pull it 17. The fish might jump and 18. Or it might dive 19 into the sea and pull the boat after it. But the fish was 20 and brave. It pulled the boat 21. When the fish 22 at last to the top of the water, the old man saw that it was two feet 23 than his boat. The old man 24 many great fish, but this one was the greatest fish he had ever seen. It was also the most 25.

A Joke on a Friend

Mark twain was a famous American writer. He wrote many famous stories which are still popular in many countries today.Mark Twain was also famous in his day 1 a public speaker. In his speaking Mark Twain always liked 2 funny stories. He also liked to listen to funny stories and to 3 his friends. One day one of his friends 4 his wallet and asked him 5 his train fare for him.

^But I don¨t have enough money to pay 6 your fare and my fare, ̄Mark Twain said.

The friend didn¨t know 7 to do.He was very sad. ^We can do this. ̄said Mark Twain.^We can 8 the train and when the conductor comes to take the tickets you can hide 9 my seat. ̄

Later, 10 ,on the train, when the conductor came to take the tickets,Mark Twain gave him two tickets 11 for Mark Twain and one for his friend. Then 12 a loud voice,Mark Twain explained.

^My friend here is a 13 strange man. When he travels on a train he doesn¨t like to sit 14 a seat.He prefers 15 on the floor under the seat. ̄

Of course, everybody in the train then looked at the poor friend under the seat and laughed at him loudly.

In the middle of the night, Peter¨s wife suddenly fell ill. She couldn¨t help crying, ^Oh, my stomach! Get the 1    ! ̄

Peter, awaking from a deep sleep, thought his wife was only having a    2    dream.

^Stop that noise, ̄ he said to her. He turned over and tried to go to 3 again, but his wife still cried out, ^On, help! help! I¨m sure I¨m 4    . ̄

Peter got out of bed and started 5    , but he could not find him any clothes.

^Where is my shirt? ̄ he asked. His wife was 6    ill to tell him, and she could only cry, ^Oh, my    7 stomach! ̄

As soon as he had put his clothes    8    , he said, ^Now, my dear, are you quite   9

that you need the doctor?  Surely you can wait 10 morning, can¨t you? ̄

^No, I can¨t. Go, go, go, ̄his wife shouted, ^    11    you will find me dead    12

the morning. ̄

So Peter went out into the dark street. He had only gone a few meters 13 he heard his wife calling him again.

^I¨m 14 again now, and I shall not want the doctor, ̄ she said, softly.

Hearing this, he started running as 15    as he could towards the doctor¨s. When he arrived there, he knocked at the door loudly enough to wake 16    around.

The doctor put his sleepy head out of the bedroom window and said, ^Er?  Who¨s there? ̄

^Oh, Doctor, ̄Peter called up to him, ^I¨ve very 17    news for you. My wife    18

ill with a terrible stomachache. I was on my way to bring you to her, but she called me back to say the trouble had suddenly 19    her. So you need not come. Go back to    20 now, and sleep well! ̄

Last evening I was watching the evening news on television. The news was about a prize for scientific  1   ;I forgot what it was. The announcer, whose name was Ralph Story, said something that caught my  2  .^All great discoveries, ̄he said,^are made by people between the ages of twenty-five and thirty. ̄  3   a little over thirty myself, I wanted to disagree with him.  4   wants to think that he is past the age of making any discovery. The next day I happened to be in the public library and spent several hours looking up the  5  of famous people and their discoveries. Ralph was right.

First I looked at some of the   6   discoveries. One of the earliest discoveries, the famous experiment that proved that bodies of different  7   fall at the same speed, was made by Galileo when he was 26. Madam Curie started her research that  8   to the Nobel Prize when she was 28. Einstein was 26 when he published his world-changing theory of relativity. Well,  9   of that. Yet I  10   if those^best years ̄were true in other  11   .

Then how about the field of   12   ? Surely it needs the wisdom of age to make a good leader. Perhaps it  13   ,but look when these people  14   their career. Winston Churchill was elected to the House of Commons at the age of 26. Abraham Lincoln  15   the life of a country lawyer and was elected to government. At what age? Twenty-six.

But why  16   best years some after thirty? After thirty, I  17   ,most people do not want to take risks or try   18   ways. Then I thought of people like Shakespeare and Picasso. The former was writing wonderful works at the ripe age of fifty, while the latter was  19   trying new ways of painting when he was ninety!

Perhaps there is still  20   for me.
