ALMOST everyone wants to get smarter. We struggle to improve our memory, intelligence, and
attention span. We drink cup after cup of coffee to help us get through the day.
However, a new study published in the journal Current Directions in Psychological Science warns that
there are limits to how smart humans can get, and trying to increase your thinking ability could be urisky.
Each of our body parts evolved in a certain way for a reason. For example, we are not 3 meters tall
because most people's hearts are not strong enough to send blood up that high. Scientists are now saying
that our thinking ability works in the same way. A baby's brain size is limited by a series of factors, such as the size of the mother's pelvis (骨盆). If our brains evolved to vbe bigger, there could be more deaths
during childbirth.
The study of Ashkenazi Jews (德裔犹太人), who have an average IQ much higher than other
Europeans, showed that they were more likely to develop diseases of the nervous system. This might be
because of their increased brainpower.
If intelligence cannot be improved, can we at least get better at concentrating? Not really, say scientists. They studied drugs like caffeine that improve attention span. They found that the drugs only helped people with serious attention problems. For those who did not have trouble paying attention, the drugs could have the opposite effect. Scientists say that this suggests there is an upper limit to how much people can or
should concentrate.
Our memory is also a "double-edged sword (双刃剑)". People with extremely vivid (生动的)
memories could end up having a difficult life because they cannot forget bad things that happen to them.
Thomas Hills of the University of Warwick in the UK, one of the authors of the paper, said that
considering all the problems in trying to get smarter, it's unlikely there will ever be a "supermind".
1. Which of the following aspects do the scientists refer to in order to explain that there will never be a
"supermind"?
  a. intelligence   b. nervous system    c. concentration ability  d. memory  e. heart disease
A. abc
B. acd
C. bcd
D. cde
2. Our heights and babies' brain size are mentioned to prove that ______.
A. there are limits to people's intelligence
B. a baby's IQ is determined by the mother's pelvis
C. most people's hearts are not that strong to make them smarter
D. it's likely that people's body parts will continue to evolve
3. Which of the following is TRUE on concentration in the fifth paragraph?
A. There is no case where concentration is improved.
B. Coffee does help a little in some people's concentration.
C. The drugs work for those who do not have attention trouble.
D. With the help of the drugs, we can gain better concentration.
4. What does the author mean by saying "Our memory is also a 'double-edged sword '"?
A. Good memory can lead to bad results, too.
B. Good memory will lead to diseases in people's body.
C. Without memory, people will lead a better life.
D. Poor memory makes people more generous.

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about
attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as
medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in.A particular
danger was, thought to lie in public baths.By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his
kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546.Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe
lived with dirt in a friendly way.Henry Ⅳ, King of France, was famously dirty.Upon learning that a
nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not
go out.
Though the belief in the merit of dirt was longlived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor
ever since the 18th century.Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health.Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease.Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness
have moved beyond science since World War Ⅱ.Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to
be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine.Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many firsttime parents nervously try to warn their children
off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an
American immunologist (免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune
system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.
1. The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because _____.
A. they lived healthily in a dirty environment
B. they thought bath houses were too dirty to stay in
C. they believed disease could be spread in public baths
D. they considered bathing as the cause of skin disease
2. Which of the following best describes Henry Ⅳ's attitude to bathing?
A. Afraid.
B. Curious.
C. Approving.
D. Uninterested.
3. How does the passage mainly develop?
A. By providing examples.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By following the order of time.
D. By following the order of importance.
4. What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A. To stress the role of dirt.
B. To introduce the history of dirt.
C. To call attention to the danger of dirt.
D. To present the change of views on dirt.

BBC News (May 11, 2008)-Edinburgh Zoo plans to bring a pair of giant pandas from China to Scotland.
Representatives from Edinburgh Zoo have recently returned from China. They signed a letter of intent (意向
书) there, making a promise to bring giant pandas to the Zoo.
It has been suggested that the pair of giant pandas should be on loan (暂借) to the Royal Zoological
Society of Scotland (RZSS) for 10 years. The pair of giant pandas would give birth to babies during that time.
Edinburgh Zoo would be the eighth zoo in the Western world to care for the species if the project goes ahead.
Zoo chiefs said that looking after the endangered animals could benefit conservation. David Windmill, chief
of RZSS, said, "Working with giant pandas means so much more to us than introducing a new species to our
collection. It is an opportunity to work on a global level with other conservationists to gain a better
understanding of the giant pandas, the threats they face, and what we can do to ensure their survival."
At present, there are only around 1,500 giant pandas in the wild. RZSS has been working on the project for
almost a year, hoping to have giant pandas at Edinburgh Zoo by 2009, the year of the society's centenary (一百
周年纪念日). Mr. Windmill said that the project has received strong support from the UK and Scottish
Governments. He also said that this must continue if the Zoo is to reach an agreement with the Chinese. As
part of the agreement with the Chinese Government, Edinburgh Zoo will work together with Chinese scientists
on research projects benefiting conservation in the wild.
RZSS will also provide money to support giant panda conservation projects in the wild. Giant pandas live
in mountainous regions in central China and almost mainly feed on bamboo, which makes up 99% of what they
eat.

The legal limit for driving after drinking alcohol is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood,
when tested. But there is no sure way of telling how much you can drink before you reach this limit. It
varies with each person depending on your weight, your sex, and what sort of drinks you've had. Some
people might reach their limit after only about three standard drinks.
In fact, your driving ability can be affected by just one or two drinks. Even if you're below the legal
limit, you could still be taken to court if a police officer thinks your driving has been affected by alcohol.
It takes hours for the body to get rid of the alcohol in one standard drink. So, if you have a heavy
drinking session in the evening, you might find that your driving ability is still affected the next morning,
or you could even find that you're still over the legal limit. In addition, if you've had a few drinks at
lunchtime, another one or two drinks in the early evening may well put you over the legal limit till late
in the night.
In a test with professional drivers, the more alcoholic drinks they had had, the more certain they
were that they could drive a test course through a set of moveable posts and the less able they were
to do it! So the only way to be sure you're safe is not to drink at all.
Alcohol is a major cause of road traffic accidents. One in three of the drivers killed in road accidents
have levels of alcohol which are over the legal limit, and road accidents after drinking are the biggest
cause of death among young men. More than half of the people stopped by the police to take a breath
analyzer test have a blood alcohol concentration of more than twice the legal limit.
It is important to remember that driving after you've been drinking doesn't just affect you. If you're
involved in an accident, it affects a lot of other people as well, not least the person you might kill or injure.
1. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Three standard drinks may cause some people to reach the legal limit.
B. There is no sure way of telling how much you can drink before you reach the legal limit.
C. The legal limit for driving after drinking is 0.08g of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood.
D. The amount of alcohol a person can drink before reaching legal limit is the same for different people.
2. We may find that the alcohol in our blood is over the legal limit in the evening after we had a few drinks at noon because ________.
A. the drinks are too strong
B. the alcohol in our drink is likely to get out of our body
C. our body needs some time to get the alcohol out of our body
D. our body is sensitive to alcohol
3. We may infer that even a professional driver ________ if he drinks heavily.
A. will probably fail to pass through a set of movable posts
B. will certainly pass through a set of movable posts
C. will hardly be confident of their ability to pass through a set of movable posts
D. will be absolutely capable of passing through a set of movable posts.
4. This passage indicates that ________.
A. a driver who does not take any alcohol will not die in road accidents
B. those who drink must be killed
C. more young men die in drink-related accidents than in any other way
D. one in three of the drivers often drinks a lot
5.One of the writer's purposes in writing the passage is to tell you that ________.
A. young men should never drive quickly
B. driving after drinking may put many lives at risk
C. safe drinking is impossible
D. the manner of drinking is meaningless

1. ______________
WL: It is a school of hip hop, which is the way I like to think of it. It combines Chinese elements and
sounds. I started it off in my last album called Shangrila. And this album combines the music of ethnic
minorities, in China, in Tibet, and in Mongolia. It's beautiful and original to Chinese culture. And this new
album called Heroes of Earth combines Opera and Quen-chu, which are thousand-year-old traditions
also unique to Chinese culture. Very unique instruments, costumes, singing styles. I don't think anyone
has ever done this before in the hip hop world.
2. ______________
WL: Um, just the large quantity of work that I have to come up with. I produce for other artists and
compose for them as well. And there are a lot of changes in music going on right now in Asia. And it's
really exciting so I decided that I'm going to need a studio in New York. I'm going to need a studio in
Taipei. And maybe the rest I can get by with just my laptop.
3. ______________
WL: Well, I started doing musical theatre. And I loved it so much from the age of 13, you know.
Actually in 2000, I did my first movie and ever since then I've been enjoying doing movies. I don't
think I'm much of an actor. But I just love being surrounded by creative people and a lot of times doing
music is a lonely struggle, especially composing, and arranging, producing my own albums. Acting, every
day you get called and you're surrounded by other actors and creative people.
4. ____________
WL: The first time I won, like you just said, when I was 22, it meant a lot to me. It was like…I didn't
know I could make this happen. I didn't know I could get this kind of recognition. So back then, it was
huge increase of confidence. And I don't want to say vanity(虚荣心), but confidence. I think every artis
needs confidence.
5. _____________
WL: Well, it can be a real pain in the neck. You know, I feel lucky that I can go back to New York
and not be recognized and not be followed. At times it can be really, really annoying. Today many
people own a cell phone that has a camera on it…and a blog. In the entertainment news, there's a recent
trend of journalists or media just going on to the Internet and saying "Oh, so and so saw so and so." when
they see a blog. You know, it's completely irresponsible but in the blog what he says can become the title
of the newspaper article.

Washington (Reuters)-People who drink two or more sweetened soft drinks a week have a
much higher risk of pancreatic cancer (胰腺癌),an unusual but deadly cancer, researchers reported
on Monday.
People who drank mostly fruit juice instead of sodas did not have the same risk, the study of
60,000 people in Singapore found.
Sugar may be to blame but people who drink sweetened sodas regularly often have other poor
health habits, said Mark Pereira of the University of Minnesota, who led the study.
"The high levels of sugar in soft drinks may be increasing  the level of insulin (胰岛素) in the body,
which we think contributes to pancreatic cancer cell growth," Pereira said in a statement.
Writing in the journal Cancer Epidemiology,Biomarkers & Prevention,Pereira  and his colleagues
said  they  followed 60,524 men and women in the Singapore Chinese Health Study for 14 years.
Over that time,140 of the volunteers developed pancreatic cancer. Those who drank two or more
sweetened soft drinks a week had an 87 percent higher risk of being among those who got pancreatic
cancer.
Pereira said he believed the findings would apply elsewhere.
"Singapore is a wealthy country with excellent healthcare.Favorite pastimes (消遣) are eating and
shopping,so the findings should apply to other Western countries," he said.
But Susan Mayne of the Yale Cancer Center at Yale University in Connecticut was cautious.
"Although this study found a risk, the finding was based on a relatively small number of cases and it
remains unclear whether it is a causal (因果的) connection or not," said Mayne, who serves on the board
of the journal, which is published by the American Association for Cancer Research.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer, with 230,000 cases globally. In the United
States,37,680 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in a year and 34,290 die of it.
