There is no denying that we are eager for golden chances to be successful in life. However, many people are not aware that chances are always for those who get well prepared.I didn’t realize it until I went to high school.

Soon after I became a senior one student, a singing competition was to be held in school.I love singing but I was very shy then and had never sung at the top of my voice in public.I could only sing to myself most of the time.Somehow, I wanted to have a try. When I talked about it with my parents, they inspired me to follow my inner voice and told me as long as I got well prepared, I would make it.With their encouragement, I became confident and practiced hard after class.Sometimes, I would turn to my music teacher for help. When I felt I was ready, the day came.Standing on the stage, I took a deep breath and began to sing with my full emotions. It turned out that I won the first prize .

This experience has taught me a precious lesson in my life.If you are not successful yet, most probably you haven’t been well prepared.Once you have, chances will surely favor you.

There is no denying that we are eager for golden chances to be successful in life.使用了that领导的定语从句;第二句中many people are not aware that chances are always for those who get well prepared. Soon after I became a senior one student, a singing competition was to be held in school. When I talked about it with my parents, they inspired me to follow my inner voice使用了when领导的时间状语从句;第二段倒数第二句Standing on the stage, I took a deep breath and began to sing with my full emotions. Once you have, chances will surely favor you使用了once领导的状语从句。本文短语使用也十分精彩,使用了be eager for渴望…,have a try试一试,as long as只要,turn to向…

Three Japanese tourists taking a holiday in Australia got stuck when their GPS told them they could drive from the mainland to an island, failing to mention the 15 kilometres of water and mud in between.

As they drove their hired car from Moreton Bay in Queensland to nearby North Stradbroke Island, they started to notice the firm gravel(沙石)surface they were driving on giving way to the renowned bay mud. However, being confident that their GPS would direct them to a road soon, they decided to plough on, managing to travel around 500 metres before their Hyundai Getz(现代汽车)was up to its axles tires in mud.To make matters worse, the tide started to come in and soon forced them to seek help and abandon the vehicle.Just four hours later the car was trapped in two metres of water —— to the great amusement of onlookers on the shore and passengers on passing boats and ferries.

Yuzu Noda, 21, said she was listening to the GPS and “it told us we could drive down there. It kept saying it would navigate us to a road. But we got stuck…there’s lots of mud.” She and her travel companions Tomonari Saeki, 22, and Keita Osada, 21, instead had to give up their plans for a day trip to the island and headed back to the Gold Coast of a lift from the RACQ tow truck(吊车)driver who was called to the trapped car.No such luck for the hired car though – after assessing the situation, no attempt was made to recover it.The students from Tokyo, who are due to return home tomorrow, said the experience would not put them off returning to Australia for another visit.“We want to come back to Australia again.Everyone is very nice, even today.” Ms Yuzu said.

Remaining excited, Mr. Tomonari joked that the car may have got stuck because it was built in Korea.“Maybe if it was Japanese it would be okay,” he said.He added, “It has rained every day on our six day holiday.Hopefully next time we come back it will be sunny.” The car was covered by insurance, but the tourists will have to pay up to about $1500 in extra charges.

Everyone has some opinion about history, no matter how ill-informed.Walking through a parking lot in a university in Miami, I noticed a bumper sticker (车尾贴纸) that said, “Ruin a Liberal’s (自由派) Day—Recite Historical Fact!” But Marwick thinks this sort of opinion is just fine; it is unavoidable that we all feel a sense of ownership of history.

History never stands still, as Marwick says at the beginning of The Nature of History, “The shape and content of history, too, vary according to the methods and materials available to different generations.” Marwick’s goal is to explain, in plain language, the changes in the way history is done up to the present; one method is to connect history with advances in the physical sciences. Marwick examines a number of case studies toward the end of the book. He ends the book with a refreshing collection of aphorisms (格言) about history. History truly belongs to each and every man and we all belong to history; with the proper education, history can be made more accessible to everyone.

Marwick relates how inventions and the physical sciences have driven historical changes. Dropping a ball in a vacuum will reveal the same properties (性质) each time the experiment is conducted, providing the conditions are the same. But historians obviously do not have the luxury of reproducing such conditions; historians view the past through the present which depends on invention and science.

By looking at the changing nature of history, Marwick feels the study progressing. Although Marwick suspects some people would accuse a historian of creating job security with the endless views of the past, he insists it is imperative based on the philosophy, science, and new materials of the age. History, according to Marwick, must be for everyone and not remain locked behind the walls of academia.

1.The author mentions the bumper sticker in order to ________.

A.show his own opinion about history

D.make the readers know about the argument between historians

2.Which of the following best describes the statement “History never stands still”?

B.Marwick connects history with advances in the physical sciences.

C.He ends the book with a refreshing collection of aphorisms about history.

D.The shape and content of history vary according to the methods and materials available.

3.In paragraph 3, Marwick gives the example of dropping a ball in a vacuum to prove ______.

A.the changeable nature of history

B.the difficulty of historical study

C.changeable ways of historical study

D.the difficulty of scientific study

4.The text is intended to ________.

A.state a historian’s ideas

B.argue against a historian

C.attract readers to study history

D.describe the story of a historian
