Many students eat their breakfasts on the way to school or in the dinning-room.  But some of them
don't really know how to eat well when eating out.
Here is some important advice.  The first is to eat less fast food.  The most obvious harm of eating
too much fast food is weight gaining because of too much fat.  Young people and adults are at risk of
disease related to weight.  Too much fast food can drag your body down.  French fries, for example,
were recently found to contain much more acrylamide(丙烯酰胺) than other food.  This may cause
cancer.  Actually, deep fried food all contains acrylamide.  So don't eat it too often.
Soda is another thing you should watch out for.  Cokes and other sodas contain a lot of sugar and
can slow down a person's calcium absorption, so it's best to drink as little soda as possible.
Food in the dinning-room may not be as tasty as fast food, but it's actually easier to make healthy
choices.  Human bodies need variety.  You can have a dinner that balances lean proteins, vitamins and
complex carbohydrates(碳水化合物).  In other words, a meal with fish or meat, vegetables and some
bread or rice will provide you with most nutrients that the body needs.
Some snacks, on the other hand, will help keep you going until your next big meal.  It is natural for
teenagers, especially boys, to feel hungry during school time.  Don't forget to take some foods, like
whole-grain biscuits or low-fat milk in your school bag.

Each year a million cows in Africa die from east coast fever. The disease is spread by
tick bites.Young cows are most at risk;they can die within days.Farmers and herders
can lose up to half or more of their calves to east coast fever.
The disease is widespread in eleven countries. And experts say it now threatens ten
million more animals in new areas including southern Sudan.
Researchers first developed an experimental vaccine against east coast fever thirty
years ago.The vaccine works by a process called "infection and treatment".The animals
are infected with whole parasites and treated with antibiotics at the same time. This keeps
the disease from developing.
Controlling east coast fever has meant a better life in areas that have gotten the vaccine.
For example, the vaccine has been available for a group of Maasai herders in northern
Tanzania for about seven years. They used to lose threefourths of their newborn calves
each year. Now,most survive. As a result, many people have extra cattle to sell, and use the
money to pay for school for their children.
But making the vaccine more widely available-especially in rural areas-has been difficult.
Farmers have been using supplies produced in the nineteen nineties.Recently there was a
shortage. The International Livestock Research Institute made one million doses at the request
of African officials. But that supply is only temporary.Another problem is that the vaccine
must be kept extremely cold.
Now,the nonprofit Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines is trying to
expand production and lower the cost.GALVmed spokesman Hameed Nuru says mobile
phones have helped lower some barriers to distribution.
HAMEED NURU:"Now,with the advent of cellular technology, most of the people we
do reach, such as the Maasai pastoralists, they all have cell phones. And they now call the
delivery agent who can now come and meet them at a particular place and do the vaccination
for them."
The vaccine is not cheap. But Hameed Nuru says the herders get together to sell a bull
and use the money to vaccinate all their animals. They understand that they are getting value
for their money:A cow is worth nearly twice as much if it is vaccinated.
A goal is to have local people develop businesses supplying the vaccine.
HAMEED NURU:"People are now seeing that they can actually make a business from
supplying this vaccine and getting out to the very rural areas where there is a market for this."
The efforts are supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the British
government.

Tomatoes are the world's most popular fruit rich in nutrition like Vitamin A, C, fibre and lycopene
(番茄红素). Researchers have found that consuming lycopene helps in preventing cancer. Tomato
also helps in keeping the skin healthy and young by protecting from harmful rays. Since lycopene is
present in the cellular wall of tomato, it is better to consume cooked tomato to have higher concentration
of lycopene. So tomatoes are a wonderful fruit.
Then how to grow tomatoes? First, there should be regular and even watering in the fields where
tomatoes grow. You can also add fertilizer to have better results. Plant the tomato plants with enough
space(for example 2 to 3 inch space)between each other to lessen spreading of disease and pests and
help the fruits get enough sunlight. Provide support like pole when the plants grow up to prevent from
disease and to increase the crop product.
In order to make your tomatoes grow well, you should take some useful tips. For example, choose
variety based on the season and soil type that you are growing. Planting site should have enough sunlight
to have more fruits. Prune(修剪)the tomato plants if necessary to maintain a manageable size. Check
tomato plants regularly for any kind of pests and diseases.
To people's regret, tomatoes possibly suffer from some diseases during their growth. So you must try
your best to prevent them. Soil should be free from debris(残骸)of earlier plant remains and should be
treated first before tomato plantation like solarizing(晒) to prevent from pests. It is always better to
choose resistant plant varieties and follow crop rotation(轮作)as far as possible.

There are different ways in which people try to deal with the problem of energy. One way is the greater production of common energy sources (能源), such as coal, oil and gas. The trouble with these sources,
however, is that they are not renewable (use again).
Another way is energy conservation (节能), which means using energy more efficiently (有效地). In
some very cold countries people build special houses to save energy. They place materials between the
inside and the outside of the walls of the house to keep the cold out and the warmth in. The house is
heated by the lights, the body heat of the people and the other equipment in it.
Finally, renewable energy sources are used even though they are often expensive to develop. One form of these is geothermal energy. In certain parts of the world the temperature of the earth increases thirty
degrees centigrade with each kilometer down. At six kilometres, therefore, it rises to nearly two hundred
degrees. To get the heat, water is pumped (压;抽) down into the rocks and back up to the surface. Heat
from the earth is already used in certain countries.
1. How many ways of dealing with the energy problem are discussed in the text?
A. Two
B. Three
C. Four
D. Five.
2. The writer tells about the "special houses" because they______.
A. show the excellent skills of the builders
B. serve as an example of energy conservation
C. are heated by different sources of energy
D. are warmer than other types of houses
3. The underlined words geothermal energy in the third paragraph mean ______.
A. heat inside the earth
B. underground source
C. renewable source
D. temperature of the earth
4. At a place where the surface temperature is 15℃, how deep do you have to dig so as to
    get a temperature of 75℃?
A. One km.
B. Two km.
C. Three km.
D. Four km.

What would you think if I told you I could eat 40 percent more food than other people-eating boxes
of ice cream, bowls of noodles and plates of meat-all while losing weight?
You might hate me, thinking I have one of those annoyingly good metabolisms(新陈代谢)that just
burn up fat the instant it enters my body. You might wonder if I have an intestinal(肠的)worm, or
perhaps an eating disorder. Or maybe you'd just shrug your shoulders and figure I have a rich fantasy
life.
     You'd be wrong.
For my body to finish such a surprising task, I would have to be a mouse. Not just any mouse, but
one lucky enough to be involved in a new study at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
After identifying an enzyme(酶)that allows fat to be stored in the body, scientists fed mice without
those enzymes, and found those mice were able to consume far more food than other mice-and still
weigh 10 to 15 percent less.
Best of all, the mice that had no enzymes were in very good health, producing baby mice with no
problem and generally acting like any other mouse. That's great news for obesity researchers, who think
that scientists may figure out a way to prevent the fat metabolizing(脂肪代谢)enzyme in humans and
control weight gain. And such a pill would be very exciting for many people who are struggling to get rid
of dangerous extra pounds.
But don't start planning any big dinner just yet. At this point, of course, any pill for humans is but a
twinkle(闪烁) in the eye of every medicine company's CEO. More tests are to be made, and eventually
humans will be introduced in the test.
But for now, unfortunately, control in diet is still the key.
1. What does "such a surprising task" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Eating a lot of food while losing weight.
B. Burning up fat very quickly.
C. Controlling the diet.
D. Having a rich fantasy life.
2. Why did the author say he/she had to be a mouse in Paragraph 4?
A. Because a mouse can lose weight no matter how much it eats.
B. Because the weight losing tests were made on the mouse.
C. Because the mouse has a very good metabolism.
D. Because the author wants to try the food without the enzyme.
3. In the experiment, the mice without those enzymes________.
A. were in good condition
B. put on weight
C. became weak
D. could not have baby mice
4. What does the author want to show through the last two paragraphs?
A. You can be free of guilt when having big dinners.
B. Scientists cannot find the key to identifying the enzyme.
C. Don't overeat before the test is made on humans.
D. It is unnecessary to control weight at present.

The gray-haired lady can't wait to leave the building to search for her dad .Unless watched ,she
will walk in the streets in an effort to find her father ,who died 30years ago.
Not all cases of Alzheimer's disease look like this ,but Alzheimer's is a serious disease that is said
to be the fourth or fifth leading cause of death for people over age 75.
It is said that about three percent of the U.S. population over age 65 have Alzheimer's .In the
early stages ,people may exhibit short term memory loss. Some may experience changes in personality ,
easy to be angry .As the disease progresses ,patients might lose the ability to move and may be unable
to speak or move at all. This progressive disease generally lasts 8 to 10 years before death occurs.
While no one is certain what causes these changes in the brain's nerve fibers (神经纤维),their effect
is certain .Alzheimer's destroys not only the patients ,but also spouses(配偶),friends and families.
What should you do if you notice progressive memory loss in yourself or a loved one? Have the
person examined by a doctor who is a specialist in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
Though many reasons other than Alzheimer's disease may cause memory loss ,its early diagnosis(诊
断)and treatment may delay some of the most serious effects.
What feeling will you likely experience should a loved one suffer from Alzheimer' s disease? A person will often go through the various stages of sadness, shock, anger, and so on. If the spouse develops the
disease, you may experience hurt and disappointment when he or she doesn't remember you are married.
Life for the Alzheimer's patients and their loved ones will never be the same as the disease progresses ,bringing a deep sorrow ,loss and even anger towards God .No matter what feelings are present ,facing
them honestly will serve one better than burying them.
1. What can be inferred from the passage about the gray-haired day?
A. She has been living with her father.
B. She was sad about the death of her father.
C. She can't search for her father without being watched.
D. She suffers from Alzheimer's disease.
2. When people suffer from Alzheimer's disease , ________.
A. their families and friends will suffer from the same disease

Africa is home to nearly 700 lakes and rivers. It holds the largest amount of water on earth. Because of
the overuse of the lakes, natural climate changes and other factors (因素), these lakes are disappearing quickly.
Millions of people in Africa depend on water sources like lakes and rivers for their daily water. In other
words, they cannot live without these lakes and rivers. Recent studies by the United Nations show that this
loss of water supply is putting a great pressure on the African population.
In the 1960s, Lake Chad was nearly 83,200 square feet large. In about forty years, it has lost 95% of its
size and it has almost completely dried up. At one time, it was one of the largest lakes in the world, and was
around 960,000 square feet around 6,000 years ago.
The sizes of lakes and rivers and the amount of water have something to do with seasons naturally. But,
pollution and agriculture also play an important part in the loss of water. Many pollutants (污染物) are put into
lakes and rivers so that many lakes and rivers are seriously polluted, and the water may be poisonous (有毒的).
If something isn't done soon about the disappearing lakes and rivers, there will not be enough water for
everyone. Then many people in Africa will face diseases and possible dehydration (脱水).
1. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
[     ]
A. There are about 700 lakes and rivers in Africa.
B. Africa is the largest continent on earth.
C. As climate changes, there is less and less water in Africa.
D. Now Africa has less water than before.
2. The figures in the third paragraph show _____.
[     ]
A. more and more lakes are drying up
B. Lake Chad was a large lake
C. how quickly water is being lost in Africa
D. Lake Chad is 4,160 square feet now
3. Which of the following is NOT one of the results of the loss of water in Africa?
[     ]
A. African people's daily life is affected.
B. Agriculture develops quickly.
C. The number of population in Africa will be smaller.
D. Many people will suffer from diseases.
4. What is the purpose of the passage?
[     ]
A. To explain why lakes and rivers are disappearing in Africa.
B. To show people the results of the loss of water in Africa.
C. To call on people to solve the problem of the loss of water in Africa.
D. To tell people how to protect the lakes and rivers in Africa.

Pregnancy(妊娠) and childbirth kill more than 536,000 women a year. More than half of the cases
happened in Africa, according to the World Health Organization. In fact, most of the deaths are
preventable with basic medical care.
The five leading causes are bleeding, infection, high blood pressure, longtime labor and bad
abortions (流产). Mothers' deaths from such causes were largely reduced nearly a century ago in
developed countries.
Experts say that what kill many women are "the three delays",   the woman's delay in deciding to go
to the hospital, the time she loses traveling there and the hospital's delay in starting treatment. Only
about 15 percent of births have dangerous complications(并发症).
Women lack education and information about birth control. Husbands and inlaws may decide where
a woman gives birth and insist that she stay at home to save money. However, there is no single solution
to a problem with so many factors shortages of doctors, nurses, drugs, equipment, roads and
transportation-though hospital officials are trying many things now.
One stopgap measure to solve the problem for the present has been to train assistant medical officers,
to perform certain operations. Some African countries are now struggling to train more assistants and
midwives(接生婆), and provide places for pregnant women to stay near hospitals.
But there is a long way to go. Only 20 percent of women in the continent give birth at the hospital.
More than 50 percent stay at home to give birth, and the rest go to local clinics that cannot handle
emergencies.
1. Which is not included in the five leading causes of women's     deaths during pregnancy and childbirth?
A. Infection.
B. High blood pressure.
C. Traveling long distances.
D. Bleeding.
2. The underlined word "stopgap" probably means "________" in     the passage.
A. final
B. temporary
C. effective
D. instant
3. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Most problems that cause women's deaths during pregnancy and childbirth can be
     treated or prevented.
B. Developed countries should help African countries reduce mothers' deaths.
C. The husbands in poor countries should take responsibility for their wives' deaths.
D. The governments of African countries have to take more effective measures to save pregnant women.
4. What is the author's attitude towards the future of preventing women's deaths during pregnancy
     and childbirth?
A. Positive.
B. Negative.
C. Objective.
D. Subjective.

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will
almost certainly mention recycling.Recycling in the home is very important of course.
However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we
need.We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way
possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home
in the first place.
The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005.It now
makes up a third of a typical household's waste in the UK.In many supermarkets
nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK,for example,
is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt,it gives off
greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect.Recycling helps, but the process
itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place.Food waste is
a serious problem, too.Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they
need. However,a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging
customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us.We have learned to associate
packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality.
This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which
often have far more packaging than necessary.
There are signs of hope.As more of us recycle,we are beginning to realise just how much
unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture,
but we have a mountain to climb.

1.What does the underlined phrase "over-consumption" refer to?
A.Using too much packaging.
B.Recycling too many wastes.
C.Making more products than necessary.
D.Having more material than is needed.
2.The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show          .
A.the tendency of cutting household waste
B.the increase of packaging recycling
C.the rapid growth of supermarkets
D.the fact of packaging overuse
3.According to the text,recycling         .
A.helps control the greenhouse effect
B.means burning packaging for energy
C.is the solution to gas shortage
D.leads to a waste of land
4.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.Unpackaged products are of bad quality.
B.Supermarkets care more about packaging.
C.It is improper to judge quality by packaging.
D.Other products are better packaged than food
5.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Fighting wastefulness is difficult.
B.Needless material is mostly recycled.
C.People like collecting recyclable waste.
D.The author is proud of their consumer culture.
