Recently, a “Free Hugs” campaign, which hit the streets of Beijing, Changsha and Shanghai,

has received both support and criticism.

Some think that free hugs will bring people closer and make the world more like a big family. Meanwhile, hugging and caring for strangers may remove the coldness of human relations in big cities. What’s more, it can be a step to harmony.

Some others have just the opposite opinion. They think hugging is a foreign tradition. Most Chinese are not accustomed to this and they may get either uninterested or embarrassed. So we shouldn’t merely copy Western things without considering Chinese traditions and customs. We can find other ways to help society.

Personally, I agree with the first view. Too often, we ignore the power of a touch, a listening ear, or the smallest act of kindness. If you embrace your parents when you go home, or embrace your friends when they feel unhappy, things will be quite different.
