Pushing children too hard is a really big social problem that seems to be getting worse. Now we
have 6montholds in music classes and swimming classes. Parents fear that if other children are attending
these classes, they will be holding their own children back if they do not enroll, too.
The other extreme, simply taking a_laissezfaire_approach and letting children do-or refuse to
do-whatever they want, is not the answer either, of course.
Dr. Taylor emphasizes that parents need to push their children based on what is best for children, not
what is best for themselves. If children understand that an activity is in their best interests, then they will
accept it, he finds.
Dr. Taylor and other family experts remain pessimistic about the possibilities for widespread social
change. "The force of our popular culture, driven by money and superficial(表面上的)values, cannot
be resisted," he says. But change can take place at a "microlevel", in families and schools.
When change does occur, the rewards can benefit everyone in the family. One mother supporting this
new approach toward parenting mentions the advantages her family experienced after her children cut
back on activities. "The biggest thing is that since we have done this, we are rested," she says. "Not only
are our kids rested, because they're not in a ton of stuff, but my husband and I are rested, because we're
not driving them everywhere. We weren't living in the moment when we were always busy. We were
living by the schedule. The return on our investment of spending time together has been enormous."
1. One of the reasons why parents push children so hard is that they ________.
A. believe in early development in children
B. are too busy to take care of their children
C. don't want their children to lag behind
D. want to repeat what their parents did to them
2. The phrase "a laissezfaire approach" (in Paragraph 2)most probably refers to ________.
A. denying them what they need
B. controlling children in a flexible way
C. developing a keen interest in children
D. letting children do whatever they want
3. The best way to encourage children to work hard is ________.
A. to make them believe it's in their best interests
B. to consider the matter from parents' standpoint
C. to emphasize the importance of hard work from time to time
D. to make it interesting and enjoyable to them
4. What the author doesn't approve of in the essay is ________.
A. achieving a balance between pushing children too hard and leaving them alone
B. going from one extreme of pushing children too hard to the other of leaving them alone
C. involving children in activities that will probably contribute to their development
D. enrolling them in classes that are best for children
5. The new approach toward parenting mentioned in the passage most likely refers to ________.
A. relieving children's hard work and unnecessary activities
B. resisting the superficial values of pop culture
C. reducing more activities off their school schedule
D. spending more time with their children

My family and I lived across the street from Sout hway park since I was four years old. Then just last
year the city put a chain link fence around the park and started bulldozing (用推土机推平) the trees and
grass to make way for a new apartment complex. When I saw the fence and bulldozers, I asked myself, "Why don't they just leave it alone?"
Looking back, I think what sentenced the park to oblivion (被遗忘) was the drought (旱灾) we had
about four years ago. Up until then, Southway Park was a nice green park with plenty of trees and a
public swimming pool. My friends and I rollers kated on the sidewalks, climbed the trees, and swam in
the pool all the years I was growing up. The park was almost like my own yard. Then the summer I was
fifteen the drought came and things changed.
There had been almost no rain at all that year. The city stopped watering the park grass. Within a
few weeks I found myself living across the street from a huge brown desert. Leaves fell off the park trees, and pretty soon the trees started dying ,too. Next ,the park swimming pool was closed. The city cut
down on the work force that kept the park, and pretty soon it just got too ugly and dirty to enjoy
anymore.
As the drought lasted into the fall, the park got worse every month. The rubbish piled up or blew
across the brown grass. Soon the only people in the park were beggars and other people down on their
luck. People said drugs were being sold or traded there now. The park had gotten scary, and my mother
told us kids not to go there anymore.
The drought finally ended and things seemed to get back to normal, that is, everything but the park. It
had gotten into such bad shape that the city just let it stay that way. Then about six months ago I heard
that the city was going to "redevelop" certain wornout areas of the city. It turned out that the city had
planned to get rid of the park, sell the land and let someone build rows of apartment buildings on it.
The chainlink fencing and the bulldozers did their work. Now we live across the street from six rows
of apartment buildings. Each of them is three units high and stretches a block in each direction. The
neighborhood has changed without the park. The streets I used to play in are jammed with cars now.
Things will never be the same again.Sometimes I wonder, though, what changes another drought would
make in the way things are today.
1. How did the writer feel when he saw the fence and bulldozers?
A. Scared.
B. Confused.
C. Upset.
D. Curious.
2. Why was the writer told not to go to the park by his mother?
A. It was being rebuilt.
B. It was dangerous.
C. It became crowded.
D. It had turned into a desert.
3. According to the writer, what eventually brought about the disappearance of the park?
A. The drought.
B. The crime.
C. The beggars and the rubbish.
D. The decisions of the city.
4. The last sentence of the passage implies that if another drought came,________.
A. the situation would be much worse
B. people would have to desert their homes
C. the city would be fully prepared in advance
D. the city would have to redevelop the neighborhood

Like most writers, Willa Cather did not write books for the money that they brought her, but rather for
the pleasure that came in their writing. Her works were, like her, simple and full of the vigor of her days in Nebraska, where she grew from child to young womanhood and where she developed a deep love for
the treeless land of the great plain with its wild flowers, wheat fields and rivers.
"It's a rather strange thing about the flat country, " she wrote later."It takes hold of you or it leaves
you perfectly cold.A great many people find it very dull; they like a church tower, an old factory, a

Many Chinese have been greatly shocked by the traffic accident caused by the drunk driver Sun
Weiming,  who has killed five and injured some others in Chengdu,  Sichuan. However,  such a case is
not rare.
Today,  traffic accidents may have been regarded as a social problem. The car has killed and disabled
more people in its brief history than any bomb or weapon ever invented.Much of the blood on the street
flows actually from rude behavior of drivers who refuse to respect the legal and moral rights of others. In
fact,  the enemies of society on wheels are rather harmless but just ordinary people acting carelessly,
you might say. But it is a principle both of law and common morality that carelessness is no excuse when
one's actions could bring death or damage to others.A minority of the killers go even far beyond
carelessness that can be imagined.
Researchers have estimated that as many as 80 percent of all automobile accidents can be attributed
to the psychological condition of the driver.Emotional upsets can change drivers' reactions,  slow their
judgment,  and make them blind to the dangers that might otherwise be evident. The experts warn that it
is vital for every driver to make a conscious effort to keep his/her emotions under control.
Yet the irresponsibility that accounts for much of the problem isn't only put upon drivers.Street
walkers regularly ignore or break traffic regulations. They are blamed in most vehiclewalker accidents,
and many cyclists even believe that they are not subject to the basic rules of the road.
Significant legal advances have been made towards safer driving in the past few years.Safety
standards for vehicles have been raised both at the point of manufacture and through regular road
inspections. In addition,  speed limits have been lowered.Due to these measures,  the accident rate has
decreased. But the accident experts still worry because there has been little or no improvement in the
way drivers behave. The only real and lasting solution,  say the experts,  is to make people believe that
driving is a skilled task requiring constant care and concentration. Those who fail to do all these things
present a threat to those with whom they share the road.

1. Traffic accidents may be regarded as a social problem because________.

A. auto driving has become dangerous and harmful in today's society
B. people usually pay no attention to law and morality when driving
C. they have caused serious psychological problems among drivers
D. the car has killed and disabled more people than any weapon in history

2. Who are NOT mentioned to be responsible for the road accidents in the passage?

A. Careless bicycleriders.
B. Careless people walking in the street.
C. Irresponsible auto drivers.
D. Irresponsible auto manufacturers.

3. By discussing solutions to traffic accidents,  the author seems to be________.

A. doubtful and hopeless
B. angry and disappointed
C. objective and concerned
D. anxious and annoyed

4. The author writes this passage to________.

A. show his worries about drunk driving
B. help protect street walkers from car accidents

Fatherhood is going to have a different meaning and brings forth a different answer from every man
who hears these words. Some feel proud when they receive the news, while others worry, wondering
whether they will be good fathers.Although there are some men who like children and may have had
considerable experience with them, others do not particularly care for children and spend little time with them. Many fathers and mothers have been planning and looking forward to children for some time. For other
couples, pregnancy was an accident that both husband and wife have accepted willingly or unwillingly.
Whatever the reaction to the birth of a child, it is obvious that the shift from the role of husband to that
of father is a difficult task.Yet, unfortunately, few attempts have been made to educate fathers in this
remobilization process.Although numerous books have been written about American mothers, only
recently has literature focused on the role of a father.
It is argued by some writers that the transition to the father's role, although difficult, is not nearly as great as the transition the wife must make to the mother's role. The mother's role seems to require complete
transformation in daily routine and highly innovative adaptation;on the other hand, the father's role is less demanding and immediate. However, even though we mentioned the fact that growing number of women
are working outside the home, the father is still thought by many as the breadwinner in the household.
1. According to the author, being a father________.
A. brings a feeling of excitement to males
B. has a different meaning for those who have daughters
C. makes some men feel proud and others uneasy
D. means nothing but more responsibilities
2. It is stated in the passage that________.
A. some couples are not prepared to have a child
B. young couples do not like children at all
C. young couples do not have much time to take care of their children
D. many couples look forward to having a boy as their first child
3. The transition to the mother's role requires that the wife________.
A. change her lifestyle in a highly innovative way
B. make a complete change in her everyday life to deal with the new situation
C. stay at home to take care of the baby
D. help her husband in his remobilization process
4. Some writers argue that with respect to the change of roles, fathers, compared with mothers, ______.
A. have to shoulder more burdens
B. have to make more difficult adaptations
C. have an easier job to do
D. can usually do a better job

To some people, happiness is something to do with simplicity, and it is the ability to extract pleasure
from the simplest things-such as a peach stone (桃核). It is obvious that it has nothing to do with success.
For Sir Henry Stewart, it was certainly successful. I remember some ten years ago when he was made King's Counsel, Amos and I went to congratulate him.We smiled happily; he merely looked as miserable
as though he'd received a punishment. He took his success as a child does his medicine. And not one of his achievements brought even a sign of a smile to his tired eyes.
I asked him one day what it was like to achieve all one's ambitions. He looked down at his roses and
went on watering them. Then he said, "The only value in achieving one's ambitions is that you then realize
that they are not worth achieving."
Yesterday, I was passing his house and he called me,"Come and see, Jan.Look! I have done it at last!" There he was, holding a small box of earth in his hand.I observed three tiny shoots out of it.
"And there were only three!" he said, his eyes laughing to heaven.
     "Three what?" I asked.
"Peach stones," he replied. "I've always wanted to make peach stones grow, even since I was a child,
when I used to take them home after a party, or as a man after a banquet. And I used to plant them, and
then forgot where I planted them. But now at last I have done it. I had only three stones, and three shoots," he counted.
Then Sir Henry ran off, calling for his wife to come and see his achievement-his achievement of
simplicity.

A. He felt happy from the simplest things.

D. to tell us that Sir Henry took his success as a tiny thing in his life
3. According to Sir Henry Stewart, the value in achieving one's ambitions is _____.

B. that he finds it worth his efforts
C. that he has achieved it

A. criticism
B. disapproval
C. admiration

In the age of reality television, success isn't the only way to the public eye. Failure can also create
fame, just like William Hung,21, a native of Hong Kong.
Hung recently has made an agreement with USbased entertainment firms Koch Records and Fuse
Music Network. They'll publish a record, titled The True Idol on April 6.
The idol is a civil engineering student at the University of California at Berkeley. He did a version of
Ricky Martin's She Bangs on the television show American Idol 3, on January 27. The Fox TV singing
contest searches for pop stars among ordinary people. In the case of Hung, however, his act was so
bad that the judges cut him off in midact.
Hung's response?" I already did my best, so I have no regrets at all." That's good, because any
common person would have found plenty to regret:the offkey singing, the blue Hawaiian shirt worn with
pants pulled up too high, the terrible dancing and the hips jerking (摇摆) to a beat that did not belong to
the song, maybe not even to this planet. It was, by all accounts, bad.
However, it was this very bad act that sold well.
Mare Juris, president of Fuse, explained it this way:" Every one of us is happily guilty of singing our
favorite song at the top of our lungs with complete freedom, completely offkey and completely unworried. That's what William did and immediately won the hearts of America."
Whatever it is, for the moment it's big. Three websites devoted to Hung have gone up on the Internet
in the past few weeks. Versions of his performance have been remixed with hip hop and technomusic
and have made it to the top 10 request list at a Chicago radio station.
So, what does Hung think of this?
"There were all these people saying things about me. A lot were saying I was very courageous and
that I was great on the show, but some didn't have much respect for me and some were kind of mean."
Now he says he's not so sure whether to distance himself from the glamour (魅力) or to accept it.
Returning to normal hasn't been easy.
1. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Something an idol behaves quite foolishly.
B. Hung's performance attracted the public eye.
C. How an unsuccessful person became famous.
D. Success sometimes does not require hard work.
2. What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 7 refer to?
A. William Hung.

Did the iPod kill music ?
DID Steve Jobs kill the music industry? That's the question on many people's lips since rock star Jon
Bon Jovi accused the apple boss of personally destroying the music industry.
Bon Jovi centers his criticism (批评) on how he believes music downloading has robbed young people
of what he calls the "beauty of buying on album", "Kids today have missed the beauty of taking your
allowance (零花钱) money and making a decision based on the Jacket, not knowing what the record
sounded like," he said.
But far from killing the industry, many young people today think Jobs has been a blessing (带来幸
运的人), offering you instant, and selective access to a whole world of music.
Keith Staskiewicz at Entertainment Weekly speaks for the feelings of many music lovers. He believes
listening to Mp3s rather than records or CDs "just saves them money" and doesn't "eliminate (消除) the
sense of discovery they get from new music", Staskiewicz also argues that it's wrong to blame Jobs and
Apple for destroying anything."Change is just part of the business," Staskiewicz said. "No doubt in 50
years, Justin Bieber will complain in his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speech about how kids
don't listen to iPods any more."
For now, though, it appears that music downloading is set to continue for the near future. According
to Summer Redstone, chairman of media company Viacom, iTunes has "resurrected (复兴) the music
industry by creating a legal, affordable purchasing system for fans".
But recent surveys suggested that, despite the "legalizing" of music downloading via sites like iTunes,
young people are still choosing to download music illegally.A report by Jupiter Research suggested that
illegal downloading sites are used three times as much as legal ones.
The problem, according to its analyst Mark Mulligan, is how today's youth grow up viewing music as
something they can get for free. "Unless the music industry can shift these consumers (消费者) while they
are young away from free consumption to paid music formats (格式),they may never develop music
purchasing behavior," warned Mulligan " recording industry could suffer long-term harm."
1. Jon Bon Jovi thinks Steve Jobs has destroyed the music industry because ________.
A. Apple encourages illegal music downloading
B. children today prefer music downloading to buying albums
C. children today do not like to discover new music
D. children don't care what a record sounds like
2. What does the underlined word "jacket" mean in the second paragraph?
A. coat
B cover
C skin
D peel
3. Which of the following statements might Keith Staskiewicz agree with according to the article?
A. Records or CDs shouldn't be sold in stores any more.
B. Steve Jobs and Apple are partly to blame for destroying the music industry.
C. There are surely more ways to enjoy music than on iPods.
D. Music downloading has its advantages and is a change that should be accepted.
4. According to Mark Mulligan, the best solution to illegal music downloading is to ______.
A. legalize music downloading via sites like iTunes
B. ban the illegal music downloading sites on the Internet
C. help young consumers get used to paying for music
D. offer young consumers instant and selective access to a variety of music
5. What is the main point of the article?
