SCIENCE NEWS FOR KIDS

Welcome to log on a new website-SCIENCE NEWS FOR KIDS!

Our goal is to offer timely items of interest to kids, accompanied by suggestions for hands-on activities, books, articles, Web resources, and other useful materials.

Our emphasis is on making the website appealing by offering kids opportunities to comment on and grade the subject matter, get ideas for science projects, and try out mathematical puzzles. At the same time, we offer teachers creative ways of using science news in their classrooms.

The Science News for Kids Web, founded by grants from several corporations and foundations, enhances the usefulness of Science News in the middle-school classroom and offers recreational reading and activities for students interested in science.

A section of the Science News for Kids Web is devoted to particular interests. At present, we have six such zones: a weekly brainteaser for those who enjoy solving and inventing puzzles (PuzzleZone), entertaining science-fiction composition exercises for those interested in writing (SciFiZone), and weekly science fair profiles along with science project ideas and tips (ScienceFair Zone). The GameZone contains a small selection of logic and memory games, implemented as Java applets (小应用程序). The TeacherZone has materials, including question sheets related to the feature article of the week, so that teachers can bring science news topics to the classroom. The LabZone features a weekly hands-on activity or science project idea. In the future, we might add additional zones, for example, for kids interested in robotics, the environment, computers, mathematics, or veterinary medicine(兽医)and animals.

The best way to come first is to go last.An analysis of almost 50 years of competitions--including Eurovision Song Contests and world skating championships--has found that contestants are more likely to win if they are among the last to appear before the judges.

The study by an American university appears to provide scientific proof(证据)that the best man,or woman, does not always win.

It found that。on average, the last competitor to appear in the Eurovision Song Contest was more than twice as likely to win as the one who went on first.

The first rounds of figure-skating championships, for which the running order is selected at random, showed more dramatic results. The final skater had a 1 4 per cent chance of victory, making him or her more than four times as likely to win as the first skater.

The study showed a gradual worsening of chances for competitors who appeared earlier in the running order.A contestant who appears first in a contest is two per cent less likely to win than one who appears second.A contestant who appears second is two per cent less likely to win than one who appears third, and so on。

The findings are published in the March issue of Acta Psychologica,a scientific journal.

Robert Hardman,a senior lecturer in psychology at London Metropolitan University who specializes in the science of decision-making,said that the results were interesting。He suggested that the effect was caused by the limitations of the human memory.

“When people make comparisons;they aren’t really able to make a lot of fine-grade discrimination. When contestants appear at the beginning of a contest, judges have little to compare them to and are perhaps wary(谨慎的)of the scores they give,” he said.

“Later on,when judges are able t0 compare the contestants to those that have gone before,

they might give more extreme marks because they feel more confident about their judgments.”

11.Robert Hardman’s words mainly tell about his       .

A.own achievement in the research

B.explanation for the findings

C.suggestion to solve the problem

D.comments on the findings

12 The first skater in the first round of figure skating championships had a        percent chance of winning.

A.two    B.three    C.four        D.six

13.According to the study, the best competitor does not always win possibly because he/she

_______.

A.fails to show his/her very best

B.is mistakenly put in the running order

C.meets with unfair judges

D.appears too early before the judges

14.Judging from the context, the underlined word  “worsening” in the 5th paragraph should mean        .

A.decrease in number

B.increase in degree

C.reduction in possibility

D.rising in quantity

15. What may be a problem with the judges according to the article?

A.They can’t remember things well enough.

B.They believe the first is seldom the best.

Being on bad terms with your neighbors can make your life frustrating day after day. But taking the time to establish a good relationship with your neighbors has a good many benefits. The community will be friendlier, the neighborhood safer, and the area a nicer place to live in. ’There are some suggestions t0 develop a good relationship with your neighbors.

Whether you're new in the neighborhood or new residents who have just moved into your block, introduce yourself. Say hello, offer a welcoming gift and share or ask about the local area.

Sometimes, you can remedy (补救) problems before they even start; for example, if you do a lot of yard work, let them know in advance and mention that if it's getting too loud, they shouldn't hesitate to let you know.

Be aware of the shared walls, if you and your neighbors share adjacent (相邻的) living spaces. and try to put noisy household appliances such as washing machines and tumble dryers away from the shared walls.

Keep your pet dog on a leash (皮带) if it has a habit of running rampant on your neighbors’ lawns, especially if they have a pet cat or a pet dog of their own, and ensure to clean up after it.

When you park your vehicle, be sure not to block anyone's access, or make them have to pull out of a very tight spot. Don't slam (砰地关上) your car doors late at night.

Weed your garden in a regular way, because the presence of weeds in your yard is not only unsightly but can also spread to your neighbor's yard.
