语篇理解
At Escarole, a small mountain town a few miles from Madrid, the Spanish king, Philip II, decided to build a palace which would serve as a royal court(皇家宫廷), an art galley(画廊) and a tomb for the Spanish kings.
It took a little over one score of years for the workers to complete the magnificent task.Philip himself often inspected the construction(工程), seated on a stone throne(皇座) placed on a hilltop two miles away.
Materials were brought from all parts of the world-stones from Italy, ironwork from England, fine woods from America.Paintings were searched for all over Europe. Many of them were also sent away again, Philip II being an extremely particular man who knew just what he wanted.Even a painting by El Greece, who had studied with two greatest artists, Titian and Tintoretto, in Venice, was not accepted.
