The cold weather of the last week has had a surprising result. Forty thousand Russian red-necked ducks have ___1___ in Britain where the weather, just below freezing, is like spring to them.
The Russian red-necked ducks manage perfectly well at temperatures down to thirty degrees ___2___ zero. They wouldn't think of ___3___ home at minus forty. But, as the weather gets colder, if it docs, they make a quick ___4___ to take off together all with a single thought ____5___,^Go somewhere ____6____ ̄.
Last Tuesday the small ___7___ near my house was invaded by about three hundred Russian red-necked ducks, a noisy lot, though I must say they were not troublesome. Our local birds were at first quite ___8___ by these ___9___ from far away, and there were some obvious language difficulties too. At nine o'clock I went down ___10___ to the edge of the lake, with a little bread and milk ___11___ our own birds. I saw them standing up, __12___ the foreigners to eat up everything. But my worry proved ___13__the red-necked birds didn't like the bread at all. Many of them ___14___ a mouthful, and threw up. In fact they pushed and fought to get away from the food, ___15___ own birds looked at them ___16___.
My wife had ___17___ me down the path with a hopeless cake she had made on Monday evening. She had forgotten to turn off the electricity in time, and the cake got ___18___ Now that, funnily enough, the Russian birds ___19__, though our birds wouldn't touch it. We realized then the visitors were used to ___20___ bread probably, and my wife agreed to make some for them.

During a recent holiday I visited Dusseldorf, a city in the former West Germany. The nine-day trip left a deep impression 1 me. I arrived at Dusseldorf airport at 7 p.m. It was already 2 outside. The first thing I needed to do was to find a place to 3 . I decided to telephone the youth hotel. But to use the phone I needed some 4 so l asked a lady for help. To my 5 she gave me three coins to use. But all the phones in the 6 needed phone cards. And phone cards could only be bought at post offices during the 7 . I was 8 I would not be able to call the hotel. An old gentleman helped me. He couldn't speak English 9 understand that I needed to 10 a phone call. He showed me where the phone was and inserted┣綵 11 phone card. I called the youth hotel and found a plaee to stay that night.
The 12 of the German people made me feel that I was not 13 , my first day in Germany wasn't as 14 as I expected.
Whenever I went, I asked people for 15 . It surprised me that 16 every young German could speak English fluently. Older Germans couldn't speak English very well, but they would try to help me 17 they could. One middle-aged man I asked for direction even 18 me to the place I was looking for.
My 19 in Germany totally changed my impression of Germans. Now I think the people couldn't be more 20 .
