     Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive (欺骗) ? When someone tells you something
that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.
      For example , some might say, "I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery (彩票) . It was great. I
took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars! "
      This guy's a winner , right?  Maybe , maybe not. We then discover that he bought  $200 worth of
tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser!
     He didn't say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That's called
a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
     Some politicians often use this trick. Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term,her state lost
one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents (对
手) says, " During Govemor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs ! " That's true. However, an
honest statement would  have been , " During Govemor Smith's term , the state had a net gain of two
million jobs. "
     Advertisers(广告商) will sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to make false statements so
they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, " Nine out of ten doctors advised their
patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache. " It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and
nine of them work for the Yucky Company.
     This kind of deception happens too often. lt's a sad fact of life :Lies are lies , and sometimes the truth
can lie as well.

homes across the UK. The UK's National Blood Service is running a TV and radio campaign
using well-known personalities, such as business leader Richard Branson, to encourage people
to donate blood.
     Only 6 percent of people in the UK have been giving blood. People can register to donate
with the National Blood Service.There are currently l.9 million blood donors registered. Fifteen
percent of these are lost each year because of moving, ill health, or even death. The service
collects over 2 million donations every year. It encourages people to give blood three times
a year and needs 8 000 blood donations every day to keep up with demand.
     Because blood donations in the UK are voluntary, the donor receives no money for their
good act. And they must be between the ages of 17 and 60 and are asked questions about
their health before donating. Many people are reluctant to give blood because they think it
will be bad for their health or that they will get an infection. Whenever mobile units are in
town, the National Blood Service hands out iriformation on how to donate blood safely to.
     The service has also worked on speeding up the donation process so that people can he

    Do you want to improve the way you study? Do you feel nervous before a test? Many students say
that a lack of concentration is their biggest problem. It seriously affects their ability to study, so do their
test results.
    If so, use these tips to help you.
Study Techniques
    You should always study in the same place. You shouldn't sit in a position that you use for
another purpose. For example, when you sit on a sofa to study, your brain will think it is time to relax.
Don't watch TV while you are studying. Experts warn that your concentration may be reduced by 50
percent if you attempt to study in this way. Always try to have a white wall in front of you, so there is
nothing to distract (make less concentrated) you. Before sitting down to study, gather together all the
equipment you need. Apart from your textbooks, pens, pencils and knives, make sure you have a
dictionary. If your study desk or table is needed when you are not studying, store all your equipment in
a box beside it   .
     Your eyes will become tired if you try to read a text which is on a flat surface. Position your book
at an angle of 30 degrees.
     Be realistic and don't try to complete too much in one study period. Finish one thing before
beginning another. If you need a break, get up and walk around for a few minutes, but try not to
telephone a friend or have something to eat.
Test-taking Skills
     All your hard work will be for nothing if you are too nervous to take your test. Getting plenty of rest
is very important. This means do not study all night before your test! It is a better idea to have a
long-term study plan. Try to make a timetable for your study which lasts for a few months.
     Exercise is a great way to reduce pressure. Doing some form of exercise every day will also improve
your concentration. Eat healthy food too.
     When you arrive in the examination room, find your seat and sit down. Breathe slowly and
deeply. Check the time on the clock during the test, but not too often. Above all, take no notice of
everyone else and give the test paper your undivided attention.

demanding organ. Vitamin B-1 also helps the memory, and that is found in eggs, meats and nuts. In

both the kidneys and the brain. And according to Chinese culture, if you keep those two important organs
in good working order, you'll live longer.
