Five tips to deal with stress
Stress, the biggest enemy of the modern world! It kidnaps our peace of mind, tortures our evenings,
when we return home from work and murders those beautiful moments. But like all enemies, this enemy
can also be got rid of!
Put your body in motion.
Moving from the chair to the couch while watching TV is not being physically active! Physical activity
is one of the most important ways to keep stress away by clearing your head and lifting your spirits.
Physical activity also increases endorphin levels-the natural "feel-good" chemicals.
Laugh
Some say that laughter is the best medicine-well, in many cases, it is! Did you know that it takes 15 facial
muscles to laugh? Lots of laughing can make you feel good-and, that good feeling can stay with you even
after the laughter stops. So, head off stress with regular doses of laughter by watching a funny movie or
cartoons, reading a joke book, or even make up your own riddles…laughter can make you feel like a new
person!
Everyone has those days when they do something really silly or stupid. Instead of getting upset with
yourself, laugh out loud! No one's perfect! Life should be about having fun. So, lighten up!
Have fun with friends.
Being with people you like is always a good way to get rid of your stress. Get a group together to go to
the movies or play a board game-or just hang out and talk. Friends can help you work through your problems
and let you see the brighter side of things.
Spill (发泄) to someone you trust.
Instead of keeping your feelings bottled up inside, talk to someone you trust or respect about what's
bothering you. It could be a friend, a parent, someone in your family, or a teacher. Talking out your problems
and seeing them from a different view might help you figure out ways to deal with them. Just remember,
you don't have to go it alone!
Lend a hand.
Get involved in an activity that helps others. It's almost impossible to feel stressed out when you're helping
someone else. It's also a great way to find out about yourself and the special qualities you never knew you
had! Signing up for a service project is a good idea, but helping others is as easy as saying hello, holding a
door, or volunteering to keep a neighbor's pet. The feeling you will get from helping others is greater than
you can imagine! In conclusion, remember, you're not alone-everyone has stresses in their lives…it's up to
you to choose how to deal with them.

Hi, everyone. What would you miss most and least if you were stuck on a
desert island? For me, it would be the changing seasons in New England. I
guess this will sound stupid but I'd probably miss the rain, too. I wouldn't
miss getting up at six every day to go to work, though! What about you?
Post 2
Tomas Germany
Good question. Steve, I think I'd miss different types of bread, and shopping
at the supermarket. I'd miss the food most. What would I miss least? My
mobile phone---I'd like to be completely quiet --- at least for a little while
Post 3
Paola
Italy
I would miss the company of people because I know I'd like to have
someone to share experiences with. I'd go mad on my own. And I sure
wouldn't miss junk mail (垃圾邮件) --- I hate coming home every evening
and a pile of junk mail in my post box.
Post 4
Miko
Japan
Hi, I would miss Manga cartoon, the internet and Japanese food, like sushi.
I'd also miss TV shows and shopping for clothes… In fact, I'd miss
everything.
Post 5
Roger
UK
I would miss my daily newspaper and listening to the news on TV and
radio. I'd feel very cut off if I didn't know what was happening in the world.
What I'd miss least would be traffic jams in the city, particularly my journey
to work.
Past 6
Jayne
Why hasn't anyone mentioned their family? I'd be lost without my husband
and two kids. They're the most important for me. And I can't get started in
the morning without a cup of black coffee. I wouldn't miss doing the
housework!
Post 7

Hi, Antonio,
I read your blog and guess what? Now I have a summer job with my neighbor moving their lawn and
doing work around their house and I am getting paid. I do the same work at my house but the pay is better
at the neighbor's. Have a great summer, man!

Dear Antonio,
My son is 15 and he has been begging for a summer job. Do you know of any place that hires children
of that age?

Hi, Antonio,

Hi, Antonio,
I am 19 years old, a college student and I am looking for a summer job. Does anyone know somewhere that
is hiring? I have been looking for two weeks now.

Dear Antonio,
My daughter is working in the file room at the law firm I work for and I am very happy that we were able
to get her on. My concern is that she wouldn't have got the summer job if I had not "known" people. What
about kids whose parents do not know someone?

Hi, Antonio,
I found my summer job on my own and my parents are so proud of me because I did it on my own. That
is why the world needs teens who can take responsibility for themselves and grow into mature and wise adults.
Can't wait for your next blog. I enjoy your writing. You have a great point of view.

Michael, a normal American, stays home on workdays. He plugs into his personal computer terminal in
order to connect with the office. After work he puts on his headphones, watches a movie on his home video
recorder or plays baseball on the computer. On many days, Michael doesn't talk to any other human beings,
and he doesn't see any people except the ones on television. Michael is imaginary, but his life style is very
possible
. The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting us off from communicating with our fellow
human beings.
The world of business is one area in which technology is separating us. Experts say, for example, that
many people will soon be able to work at home. With access to a large central computer, employees such as
office clerks, insurance agents, and accountants could do their job at display terminals in their own homes.
They would never have to actually see the people they're dealing with. Also, the way employees are paid will
change. Workers' salaries will be automatically paid into their bank accounts, making paper checks
unnecessary. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their checks. Personal banking will
change, too. Customers will deal with machines to put in or take out money from their accounts.
Another area in which technology is changing is entertainment. Music, for instance, was once a group
experience. People listened to music at concert halls or in small social gatherings. For many people now,
however, music is an individual experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their living rooms, they wear
headphones to build a wall of music around them. Movie entertainment is changing, too. Movies used to be
social events. Now, fewer people are going out to see a movie. Many more are choosing to wait for a film to
appear on television or are borrowing videotapes to watch at home. Instead of laughing with others, viewers
watch movies in their own living rooms.
1. The underlined sentence in the first paragraph means _____.
[     ]
A. Michael is a person full of imagination and his dreams can come true
B. Michael is not a real person but the life style does exist
C. Michael has ambitions but he can't make his dreams come true
D. Michael is full of imagination and his life style is common nowadays
2. What does the author discuss in the last paragraph?
[     ]
A. Technology is changing ways of entertainment.
B. People will never go to the concert in future.
C. How to borrow videotapes at home.
D. How to see a movie at home.
3. What is the main idea of the passage?
[     ]
A. We may no longer need to communicate with other people.
B. Modern technology seems to be separating people.
C. We may no longer need to work in the office.
D. Modern technology makes it possible for us to work at home.

makes for a good story, no matter from where or whom the story springs.

Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were
all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon left their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them,
I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.
Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim (模糊的) memory of
the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts,
uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the
local birds, and above all, the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm had led me into
varied investigations (调查研究). I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil reading
about other people's observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations
together in my conscious (清醒的) mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all
seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with
the title of scientific research.
But curiosity, keen (敏锐的) eyes, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make
a scientist: one of the excellent and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist, up to
a certain point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.
1. The first paragraph tells us the author _____.
[     ]
A. was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood
B. lost his hearing when he was a child
C. didn't like his brothers and sisters
D. was born into a naturalist's family
2. The author can't remember his relatives clearly because _____.
[     ]
A. he didn't live very long with them
B. the family was extremely large
C. he was too young when he lived with them
D. he was fully occupied with observing nature
3. The author can't remember his relatives clearly because _____.
[     ]
A. he didn't live very long with them
B. the family was extremely large
C. he was too young when he lived with them
D. he was fully occupied with observing nature
4. The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he _____.
[     ]
A. has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmetic
B. lacks some of the qualities required of a scientist
C. just reads about other people's observations and discoveries
D. comes up with solutions in a most natural way
