【答案】Dear Tom,

I am glad to have received your letter. Now I can’t wait to share with you what I did during the holiday.

For a month, I worked as a volunteer in a primary school in Guizhou, where I taught the students drawing. The students showed great interest in my lessons and a few of them did have a gift for art. We got on very well. At the same time, I learned to plant vegetables and gained much agricultural knowledge. Life was tough there. Compared with those children, we are really happy. So we should value our life and help those in need.

How was your summer holiday? Looking forward to your letter!

Yours,

Li Hua

【题目】Minutes after the last movie ended yesterday at the Plaza Theatre, employees were busy sweeping up popcorns and gathering coke cups. It was a scene that had been repeated many times in the theatre’s 75-year history. This time, however, the clean-up was a little different. As one group of workers carried out the rubbish, another group began removing seats and other theatre equipment in preparation for the building’s end.

The film classic The Last Picture Show was the last movie shown in the old theatre. Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience wanting to say goodbye to the old building. Theatre owner Ed Bradford said he chose the movie because it seemed appropriate. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theatre is preparing to close down.

Bradford said that large modern theatres in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete. He added that the theatre’s location (位置) was also a reason. “This used to be the centre of town, ”he said. “Now the area is mostly office buildings and warehouses.”

Last week some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theatre into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were abandoned because of financial problems. Bradford sold the building and land to a local development firm, which plans to build a shopping complex on the land where the theatre is located.

The theatre audience said goodbye as Bradford locked the doors for the last time. After 75 years the Plaza Theatre has shown its last movie. The theatre will be missed.

【题目】 The first men and women came to Britain over two and a half million years ago. 1 But the British Isles only became islands separated from the rest of Europe about 8, 500 years ago, when melting ice formed the English Channel!

3,000 years after Britain became an island, new tribes who came by boat from the mainland introduced farming.2Many of these man-made hills can still be seen.

Later on, people learned to build stone monuments. The most amazing is Stonehenge, a circle of huge stones begun about 4,500 years ago. Stonehenge is the world's most famous prehistoric monument. 3

What we know about the first people in Britain has been worked out by archaeologists from the remains they left behind them. Pytheas, a Greek, was the first person who could read and write to come to Britain. His visit was in about 330 BC, over 2, 000 years after Stonehenge was begun. 【题目】Each year more than 2,500 people die and 12,600 are injured in home fires just in the United States, with direct property(财产)loss because of home fires at about $7.3 billion every year. Every day Americans experience the horror of fires, but most people don’t understand fires.

To protect yourself, it is important to learn something about home fires.

In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for it to be in flames. Most deadly fires occur in the home when people are asleep. If you realize a fire, you won’t have time to take valuables because the fire spreads too quickly and the smoke is too thick. The fire uses up the oxygen you need and produces smoke and poisonous gases that kill. Breathing even small amounts of smoke and toxic gases can make you tired and sleepy, and short of breath. The smoke can cause you to be a deep sleeper before the flames reach your door. You may not wake up in time to escape.

Room temperatures in a fire can be 100 degrees at floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level. Breathing in this super-hot air will burn your lungs. It can melt clothes to your skin. In five minutes, a room can get so hot that everything in it starts to burn at once.

Fires are bright at first, but quickly produce black smoke and complete darkness. If you wake up to a fire you may be blinded, confused about where you are or which direction you should go and unable to find your way around the home you’ve lived in for years.

Only when we know the true nature of fires can we prepare our families and ourselves.

【题目】阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Getting up early has been seen as a good habit since ancient times. Many years ago, people thought that if we went to bed early and got up early, we would be energetic (精力充沛的) the whole day. So, getting up early is of great importance to us all.

In fact, morning is the best time of a day. In the morning, the air is the freshest and people are usually in the best condition. Many of us may have the experiences that we memorize some things more quickly and correctly in the morning than any other time of the day. And it is certain that we find it easier to understand what we learn. If we get up early and do some morning exercises or only take a short walk in the morning, without doubt we can build up our bodies and become much healthier. Also we will have enough time to make a plan and get ready for our work or study of the day if we get up early. For example, if everyone in the family gets up early, the wife will have enough time to prepare the breakfast for the whole family. Children will have enough time to catch the school bus, and the husband will never forget to change his dirty shirt. Everything is in order. However, if we get up late, we’ll probably have to do everything in a hurry.

Getting up early is such a good habit that we should try our best to keep it. If we stick to (坚持) getting up early every day, we will certainly benefit a lot from it.
