She Nile is a water highway, carrying traffic of all kinds for the people of Egypt. Flat-bottomed boats carry fruits and vegetables from one city to another. There are also passenger boats on the Nile. There boats carry people up and down the river. Very heavy loads can travel by barges. The stone was used to make buildings and monuments.
The Nile also provides food for the people of Egypt. Egypt is mostly a desert. Crops will not grow in this desert land. But close to the Nile, crops grow well. In fact, several different crops are often raised on the same land during one year. Water down the Nile helps make the land fertile(肥沃).
The Nile’s yearly floods used to benefit the people. Rain falls heavily in the Ethiopian mountains and highlands. The water from these rains flows down into the Nile. The river rises. These early summer rains used to cause floods. The river over flowed its banks and spread over the land. It carried rich soil in land every summer. It also brought water for crops.
