Three years ago, I had a job in a retail store (零售店). I    21   to talk to everybody and know what was going on in their    22  . I remember a girl who started    23   there a few months after me. We seldom talked but we always    24   each other and smiled.
She always smiled in a really happy way    25   one day when we got to work in the    26   department. She smiled as if she was the    27   girl in the world. I went up to her and asked, “What’s wrong with you?” She answered, “Why?” I said, “I could feel you’re very    28  , but you’re always trying to    29   it.”
Her mouth just dropped as if I had    30   her deepest secret, so we started talking. She told me    31   she was feeling unhappy and why she was trying to    32   that nothing was wrong. Time went by and we became good friends. She’d always tell me I had   33   her life in so many ways.
Today that girl is one of my best   34  . I really don’t know what I would do    35   her. She has been there for me in every    36   way a friend could be.
What I’m trying to say is that you never know    37   you’re helping yourself. I helped this girl never knowing that at the same time I was helping myself by finding a    38   friend.
So the next time you see a    39   and he needs someone who will    40   to him, wait and let him say what he wants to say. You never know, you might just end up helping yourself.

During one of the toughest weeks of my life, I had the chance to experience surprising grace(善举).
I was in my office, when a young man came by. He was obviously very    36  and close to tears. He was an older student and always appeared like a tough guy,    37  showing emotion.
He had told me   38  that he was dealing with some difficult  39  problems. He was a caregiver for his sister who was ill. This day he came in, sat down and just sobbed(抽泣). I   40  while he told me how he had been up all night in the hospital with his sister and that was why he couldn’t take my exam that morning. I told him not to   41  it at all. He was clearly in no shape for an exam. I told him to go home and    42  . I reassured(使放心) him that I would do everything I could to help him get through the class.
I just sat there while he sobbed. “I think she might die,” he gasped(喘着气说). “What am I going to do?” It was clear to me that he had never   43  this fear out loud to anyone. I just sat there, fully focused on him and his  44 , and tried to offer some soft words of   45  .
After quite some time, he   46  himself. I reassured him again that it didn’t matter to me when he took his exam and that I would help him through. Then he left.
Afterwards, I felt like his    47  was a blessing(为人带来幸福的事). Being able to help him while I was in pain myself was the most valuable gift.
Life never gives more than we can handle.

As a physician who travels quite a lot, I spend a lot of time on planes listening for that dreaded “Is there a doctor on board?” announcement. I’ve been  36 only once-for a woman who had merely fainted. But the   37 made me quite curious about how  38 this kind of thing happens. I wondered what I would do if  39 with a real mid-air medical emergency-without access  40 a hospital staff and the usual emergency equipment. So   41 the New England Journal of Medicine last week   42 a study about in-flight medical events, I   43 it with interest.

The study estimated that there are a(n)  44 of 30 in-flight medical emergencies on U.S. flights every day. Most of them are not   45 ; fainting and dizziness are the most frequent complaints.  46 13% of them-roughly four a day-are serious enough to   47 a pilot to change course. The most common of the serious emergencies   48 heart trouble, strokes, and  difficult breathing.

Let’s face it: plane rides are   49 . For starters, cabin pressures at high altitudes are set at roughly   50 they would be if you lived at 5,000 to 8,000 feet above sea level. Most people can tolerate these pressures pretty   51 , but passengers with heart disease   52 experience chest pains as a result of the reduced amount of oxygen flowing through their blood.  53 common in-flight problem is deep venous thrombosis(血栓)-the so-called economy class syndrome(综合症).  54 happens, don’t panic. Things are getting better on the in-flight emergency front. Thanks to more recent legislation(立法), flights with at   55 one attendant are starting to install emergency medical equipments to treat heart attacks.
