A few years ago, my younger brother and I went to Norfolk, Virginian by plane. , before we took off, we heard the pilot's voice throughout the plane, “Sorry, ladies and gentlemen. We have no on the plane. We have a generator(发电机), and we are going to the engines with it. We will in the air and head to Norfolk, and see what happens. ”

See what happens? We are going to get up in the air, and see what happens? At this point, one woman started crying. “Oh, no! We are going to !” There were sighs of and anxiety quickly spreading throughout the plane, and we hadn't even yet. Thirty minutes passed and we were still there. Then the voice of the pilot came over again,“ Ladies and gentlemen, I know you are , so are we. We only have one engine going right now, and it is working double time.”

There was crying we had walked in to grave(坟墓). But the pilot told us our one engine was working double time, and his was to get up in the air and see what happens! Then we did. We got up in the air and happened. We arrived in Norfolk and everyone for still being alive.

Although I do sincerely like to have a plan “see what happens”, it really isn’t such a bad life strategy. All too often, I would see people pursuing their goals with inaction just because they don’t have success. Actually, success will never be guaranteed. The thing that you can do is just get up in the air, and see what happens.

If you are planning to learn a new skill, “get up in the air, and see what happens!” It might not be as as you thought. You might be smarter than you thought, and the result could be very ! So don’t stay there trying nothing just because there is no of guaranteed success.

Thank you, Dean Areen, for that very generous introduction, and very special thanks to my good friends President Lucy Reed and Executive Director Betsy Andersen for the extraordinary work you do with the American education.

It is such a pleasure to be back here at the ASIL. I am embarrassed to confess that I have been a member of ASIL for more than 30 years, since my first year of education school, and coming to the annual meeting has always been a highlight of my year. Let me start by bringing you special attention on something you already know.

As a professor I have grown accustomed to the opinion regarding American education. We are repeatedly told that American schools are failing, that colleges are not teaching, and that the students of today are not as good as the students of the past.

There are, of course, problems with the education system. Because of economic inequality some schools are significantly better than others and the ideas of equality of education and equality of opportunity are cruel jokes. However, the only fact that there are serious problems does not mean that all the dire claims are true.

One stock(陈腐的)claim is that America has fallen behind the world in education in terms of performance on various test. While the fact that America is behind other countries is a point of concern, there are at least three points worth considering here. The first is the above-mentioned economic inequality which will tend to result in poorer performance when taking the average for America. The second is that many countries have put considerable effort into improving their education systems and therefore it is worth considering that America’s decline is also due to the improvement of others. The third is the matter of the measures---do they, in fact present an accurate picture of the situation? I am not claiming that the data is bad. I am merely raising a reasonable concern about how accurate our picture of education is at this time.

Another stock claim is that American students are doing badly on standardized tests. While there is clearly value in assessment, it is reasonable to consider whether or not such tests are a proper and adequate measure of education. It is also worth considering whether the puzzle with these tests is itself causing damage to education. That is, as teachers teach for the test and students learn for the test, it might be the case that what is being taught is not what should be taught and what is being learned is not what should be learned.

1. According to the professor, many people’s attitude towards American colleges is ______.

A. approving B. positive

C. indifferent D. negative

2.What does the underlined word “dire” in the second paragraph mean?

A. Extremely serious or terrible

B. Long and boring

C. Fair or objective

D. Exact or precise

3.Judging by the text, the claims are centered on ______.

A. fair judgment of American education

B. an accurate picture of American colleges

C. American students’ performance on tests

D. what should be taught in the American classroom

4.The passage is written mainly to ______.

A. explain why American students do badly on tests

B. show dissatisfaction with American education

C. defend American system

D. offer advice on American education reform

Woman Uses Daughter's Key to "Steal" Car

Charlie Vansant, a college student of Athens, Ohio who reported that his car was stolen, got a surprise when he learned a woman had mistaken it for her daughter's car and taken it--using her key.

Kate Anderson became an accidental car thief when picking up her daughter's car near an Ohio University building last week. Anderson spotted the Toyota Camry(丰田凯美瑞)and used her daughter's key to unlock the car, start the engine and drive home-without realizing that the car wasn't her daughter's.

When Charlie Vansant left class a short time later, he found only an empty parking spot. He first assumed the car had been towed, but when the police couldn't find a record of it, they took a theft report.

The morning after Anderson took the car, her daughter discovered the Camry in the driveway wasn't hers. Anderson said she was able to find Vansant's name on paperwork in the glove compartment and look up his phone number on the website of the university.

When Anderson told Charlie the car was in her driveway, "It sounded real suspicious at first, as she wanted to hold the thing for ransom(赎金),” said Vansant. He eventually went to the house with a police officer, where he was reunited with his car. According to the police report, the case was closed "because of mistaken car identity", Anderson wasn't charged.

Vansant seemed to blame the car company more than the "thief". "Her key fit not only my lock, but my ignition(点火装置) as well-so high-five for Toyota. I guess." he said.

C. Charlie had thought he had to give Anderson money to get his car back.

D. Mrs. Anderson used her daughter's key to unlock Charlie's car and drive home.

3.What does Charlie mean by "high-five for Toyota"?

A. He is blaming Toyota for the poor quality of car keys.

B. He should thank Toyota for returning his car.

C. He wants to celebrate with Toyota for getting his car back.

D. He thinks highly of Toyota for producing large quantities of cars.

4.What is likely to happen next according to the passage?

A. Mrs. Anderson was charged with stealing a car.

B. Charlie blamed Mrs. Anderson for mistakenly taking his car.

C. Charlie would ask the Toyota Company to give him an explanation.
