Have you ever imagined what it would have been like to go on an old-time western cattle drive?
The early cattle drives were long and hard-and sometimes even dangerous. They took place because Texas ranchers wanted to get their beef cattle to people in northern cities. Railroads used for carrying the cattle did not go all the way into Texas at that time, however. The ranchers decided to solve their problem by hiring workers, called cowhands, to take the cattle to the railroad stops in Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado.
The long cattle drives ended when the railroad lines were extended into Texas and other western lands.
