Born in Lahore, Pakistan, Komal Ahmad’s parents decided to move the family to Las Vegas when she was very young. Her mother studied to become a nurse and quickly increased the family’s income. She later attended UC Berkeley. Komal was interested in becoming a naval doctor and was part of ROTC in college. She always wanted to serve her country. She didn’t realize then that "serving" her country would later become food-related.

It was 2011, when Komal Ahmad, a senior in college at the time, walked past a young man on the street who was begging for food. She invited him to sit down for a meal. At the same time, a few feet away, the dining hall was throwing away pounds of delicious food. Witnessing this, Komal knew she was meant to do something about the situation. Komal started a student group that recovered food from campus and distributed it to local non-profit organizations.

As rewarding as this was, something bothered her. One day, she got a call from the dining hall manager, who had 500 sandwiches left over from an event. Komal needed to pick them up before they spoiled(变质). She rented a car, loaded it with the food, and called non-profit organizations. She found takers for only 25 sandwiches. Knowing it shouldn’t be that hard to help people, she extended her rental reservations in order to push the sandwiches. Then the light bulb moment she was waiting for: what if there was an app that could pair people who had food with people/span> who needed it? And thus, Copia was born.

Companies use the app to report when they have leftover food. When charity agencies first register with Copia, they indicate how many people they need to feed, and on what days. The app distributes the leftover food, delivered by trained food handlers.

For the last 115 years, the Swedish Academy has decided who will receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, thus determining who will be promoted from the great and the near great to the immortal(不朽人物).

But today the Academy is coming under heavy criticism both from within and without. Critics argue that the selection of the winners often has less to do with true writing ability than with the peculiar politics inside the Academy and Sweden itself. According to Ingmar Bjorksten, the cultural editor for one of the country’s two major newspapers, the prize continues to represent "what people call a very Swedish exercise: reflecting Swedish tastes".

The Academy has defended itself against such charges of provincialism(排外主义) in its selection. It says that its physical distance from the great literary capitals of the world actually serves to protect the Academy from outside influences. This may well be true, but critics respond that this very distance may also be responsible for the Academy’s inability to have an accurate idea of the trends in the literary world.

Regardless of concerns over the selection process, however, it seems that the prize will continue to survive both as an indicator of the literature that we most highly praise, and as a difficult goal that writers seek. If for no other reason, the prize will continue to be desirable for the financial rewards that accompany it. Not only is the cash prize itself considerable, but the prize dramatically increases sales of an author’s books.

【1】What is Paragraph 2mainly about?

A. The responsibility of the Swedish Academy.

B. The history of the Swedish Academy.

C. Why the Swedish Academy is criticized.

D. How the Academy chooses prize winners.

【2】What does the Academy think of its location?

A. It helps the Academy make fair choices.

B. It puts the Academy at a disadvantage.

C. It helps the Swedish develop their taste in literature.

D. It makes the Academy unaware of literary trends.

【3】10. What does the author say about the Nobel Prize in Literature in the end?

A. It will remain important.

B. Its selection process may change.

C. No financial award can compare with it.

D. It will be more difficult to win it.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards the Swedish Academy?

A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.

On one of her trips to New York several years ago, Eudora Welty decided to take a couple of New York friends out to dinner. They settled in at a comfortable East Side cafe and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table.

"Hey, aren’t you from Mississippi?" the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger. "I’m from Mississippi too."

Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair.

"They began telling me all the news of Mississippi," Welty said. "I didn’t know what my New York friends were thinking."

Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Welty’s new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi.

"My friends said: ‘Now we believe your stories,’" Welty added. "And I said: ‘Now you know. These are the people that make me write them.’"

Sitting on a sofa in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation.

"I don’t make them up," she said of the characters in her fiction these last 50 or so years. "I don’t have to."

Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Welty’s people come from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets of her native Jackson, Miss., from conversations overheard on a bus. It annoys Welty that, at 78, her left ear has now given out. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story.

【1】What happened when Welty was with her friends at the cafe?

A. Two strangers joined her.

B. Her childhood friends came in.

C. A heavy rain ruined the dinner.

D. Some people held a party there.

【2】 The underlined word "them" in Paragraph 6 refers to Welty’s.

A. readers B. parties C. friends D. stories

【3】What can we learn about the characters in Welty’s fiction?

A. They live in big cities.

B. They are mostly women.

C. They come from real life.

D. They are pleasure seekers.
