It seems that Americans are much happier to help strangers than Chinese.Once I walked on the street and tried to find my 44        to my hotel. I stopped and 45        out my map and began searching for the right way. Then a lady came to me with a friendly smile.I was 46        if I was in her way. The lady asked/4 Do you need any help? I can 47        you the way." I was very surprised. In China, most people won’t give you a hand 48        you ask. I said yes to her. She

carefully explained the direction to me. I was 49        moved by her warm attitude.

After experiencing 50        many things like that in the US,I thought about the situation in China. My teacher inChinatold me that several years ago he went to 51        city by himself. After a whole day’s hard work at a factory,he

bought a pancake at a stall (摊位)52        he later found out

that it had gone bad.Since then,he has been very 53 to buy food at the little stalls.

Chinese people are more vigilant (警慑的)to strangers because they are afraid to get hurt. But many American people believe that if you love others first, you will be loved.I think we should learn from this attitude.

Fluency (流利)in another language is a dream of a newcomer to another country. Besides, understanding the culture and learning to communicate comfortably with people of that culture are as important as learning the rules of the language. Language learning and culture learning go together and may take a long time.

Sometimes people feel that they understand a culture after a few weeks or months.People do learn a lot when they first begin living in another culture, but this is only the first step of learning. It usually involves things like learning everyday activities and some basic customs (习俗).

To really understand another culture, people have to go beyond the first step. This is a challenge because it is often difficult to know what to learn. Much of what we call u culture^ is hard to see.

Culture is like an iceberg(冰山).Imagine in your mind a huge iceberg in the ocean. The only part of the iceberg that you see is the tip. You don’t see the rest of the iceberg because it is hidden from sight in the water. It is easy to forget that it is there. Most of the iceberg is deep in the ocean, just as much of a culture is deep within its people.

When you meet someone from another culture, certain culture differences are obvious: You hear another language or you hear your own language spoken with an accent (口音)• You see different foods, clothes and sometimes physical characteristics of people. You watch new customs or habits, such as the use of chopsticks, and bowing or kissing on both cheeks as a greeting. These differences are interesting and important, but they are usually not too difficult to understand. They can be seen easily and quickly.

The part of culture that is like the underwater part of the iceberg consists of assumptions (设想),communication styles, values, and beliefs about what is right and wrong. The hidden part of culture influences much of a person’s way of thinking and communicating.lt is the meaning behind his or her verbal (言语的)and non-verbal language. Learning to communicate well with people from another culture involves understanding the hidden part of culture.

Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing (令人迷惑的).A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They thought that miscommunication was always possible, even over something as simple as “yes” and “no”.

On her first day inMicronesia,an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. Jane remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was known for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today?” He nodded his head. Jane waited, but the cabbage never came.In that country,a nod means“ no ”

Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some students had not understood ,so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean “yes ” or“ no ”.
