Did you sleep the day away on March 21? Well, you should have done because it was World Sleeping Day. This is the one day of the year when people around the world care about their sleep, and ask themselves a lot of questions about sleep.

Why do we need sleep? Nobody can give a perfect answer to it. However, tests have shown that lack (缺少) of sleep over about four weeks leads to a strong drop in body temperature, great weight loss and finally, sickness.

Different people need different amounts of sleep. Eight hours a night is considered the average (平均) amount of sleep. For teenagers, the least number of sleeping hours advised by doctors are: ten hours for primary school students, nine for junior highs and eight for senior highs.

Some people seem to get along just fine with very little sleep at night. Leading American scientist Thomas Edison said that sleep was a waste of time. He did, however take naps during the day. On the other hand,Albert Einstein, another great scientist, said he needed at least ten hours' sleep a night.

Here are some of the most useful suggestions for a good night's sleep: Go to bed at the same time; Don't exercise in the evening;Keep the bedroom dark and quiet;Drink a glass of milk before sleep;Stop looking at the watch while you can't sleep!

Scientists say that the cold started in the Arctic (北极) .The sea ice there has been melting (融化) because of global warming.

This changes how the air moves. "Some areas of the ocean act like a heater as the water is warmer than the Arctic air above it. ” said Professor Stefan.

Watching news about the environment on TV can make people feel terrible. The problems seem so big that it's difficult to imagine how persons can do anything about them. Rebecca Hosking, however, thought differently.

Rebecca is a wildlife camerawoman and she was filming a documentary for the BBC in the Pacific Ocean when she saw something that made her cry ―quite a lot of dead birds that had died because they had eaten some plastic that is thrown into the sea each year. Beaches that used to be beautiful were covered with plastic toys, bottles, pens ― every plastic thing you can think of.

Rebecca decided she had to do something. Back at home she thought about what she could do to help deal with the problem of throwaway plastic. In her hometown of Modbury, she asked local shop owners to stop using plastic bags in their shops.

Plastic bags are used everywhere in theUK. The numbers are amazing. TheUKuses are nearly 17 ,000,000,000 plastic bags each year. And the bags can take a very long time to break down because they are chemical (化学物) rather than natural,so each year the sea and the environment become more and more polluted.

To Rebecca's surprise, the shop owners agreed and Modbury became the first plastic bag free town in theUK. Instead, shops offered cotton bags or paper bags. Other towns around theUKfollowed Modbury's example and are becoming plastic bag free. It won't deal with all of the world's environment problems but it shows that there is something we can do and one person can make a big change with a strong enough decision.
