Twenty-six. So can you read it now?

she felt puzzled. She couldn't read it at all. But David was very happy that his sister couldn't read his message!
Lots of people use codes to send secret messages. In a war, secrets are very important so soldiers often
send each other messages in code. Nowadays, we can use computers to make and break difficult codes. Even
before computers, people invented other machines to do this.
Here's a famous machine that Germans used in the Second World War (1941-1945). It's called the Enigma
Machine. The machines were very big, heavy and expensive. Every day they changed the codes automatically,
and this made it almost impossible for anyone to break the codes. The person sending a message had one
machine, and the person receiving the message had another.

Children all over the world like to celebrate their birthdays. American children are of no difference.
They usually celebrate with a party. They invite their friends to their birthday parties. The party may
not be held on the right date of their birthday if it comes on a school day. It may be held on the weekend
instead.
Today two kinds of parties are the most popular. One is held at home. Parents decorate the house
beautiful with balloons and coloured paper. They prepare a special birthday meal. The children play games.
The other kind is held away from home. Some are at a special restaurant. The children eat pizza and ice
cream. The waiters, who serve the food, also sing and tell jokes to the children. Other parties may be held
at a park, or at a movie theatre, or in some other places. Every birthday party has a cake with candles on it.
There is one candle for each year of a birthday boy's or girl's age. When the candles are lighted (点燃),
everyone sings the special birthday song: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU.
As Americans grow older, their birthday parties change. In fact, many people stop having them. They
say they would like to forget how old they are. Yet they do like to keep the happy birthday parties of their
childhood in mind.

Below are some suggestions given by the English children posted on the website about how to help
Africa. Which one do you think is the best?
I think health is the most important thing. We need to make sure that the money we give is
spent wisely. The money should be spent first on clean water supplies and better health care.
                                                                             -----Robin, aged 16, Birmingham

I think the most important thing is to improve the education of the African countries.
There is an old saying,"If you give a man a fish, you'll feed him for a day. If you teach him
how to fish, you'll feed him for a lifetime." We need to help people to help themselves, not
just throw money at the problem when it appears.
                                                                             -----Rebecca, aged 15, Liverpool

People seem to give a lot more money to charity when there is a sudden, huge disaster (灾难) like the earthquake. It's good for people to do so, but I also think that everyone should
give a small part of their salary (工资) to charity. If everyone did that, it would make a big
difference.
                                                                      -----Mary, aged 14, Stratford-on-Avon

Giving money to charity can help, but it's not the final answer. I think what these
countries need is a good government.
                                                                      -----Bethany, aged 16, Newcastle

The best thing we can do is to send experts like engineers, doctors and teachers to
help the people to help themselves.
                                                                        -----Robert, aged 16, Cardiff

B. We should help people in Africa how to build a good government.
C. We should help the African people develop skills to make a living.
D. We should help the African people build more schools.
4. What is Mary's opinion?
