 Everyone knows that English is spoken as the first language in the United Kingdom，the United States of America, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. But few people may know that English is also the mother tongue in countries such as the Republic of Ireland(爱尔兰)，Barbados，Jamaica，Trinidad，and Guyana. Among these countries, the Irish(爱尔兰人)have made the greatest contributions to the English language in both its words and literature(文学).

  English literature has become more colorful because of the writings of the Irish. Many great "English" writers were born and often raised in Ireland, though many moved to the United Kingdom at some point in their lives. George Bernard Shaw, and Edmund Burke were among them.

  A giant(巨人)of English theater was George Bernard Shaw ( 1856-1950). Shaw was born in Dublin the capital of Ireland, and moved to England with his family when he was 20 and stayed there for most of the rest of his long life. Among Shaw's plays, one of the best well-known plays is Pygmalion( 1916). It was later filmed,winning an Oscar(奥斯卡奖)for Shaw. A good story never dies. Now Pygmalion has been made into a new movie named Pretty Woman(1990).

  Though English literature written by the British is rich and colorful, it would be dimmer (暗淡的)without the Irish contributions.
