      Twentieth Century Inventions
●●●1903-The first flight succeeded.

In 1900, Wilbur Wright said flight was possible for man. After much work he and his brother
Orville Wright made this dream come true.
On December 17, 1903, the brothers made the first successful airplane flight on a windy beach
at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The brothers’ plane flew 120 feet. Although the flight lasted only
12 seconds, it moved the course of history in a new direction.
●●●1935-Nylon was invented.

In 1928, a new chemical lab was opened to make a kind of man-made materials. Wallace Carothers
took part in the team when he was 32 years old.
In 1934, he made fibers (纤维), but the fibers were quite weak. He didn’t give up. After many
experiments, he produced the long and strong fibers in 1935. They named the fibers "nylon".
Carothers was very satisfied with his work.
Nylon hit the markets in 1939, and quickly became a replacement of silk. But it was a pity that he
didn’t see the wide use of his invention. He died in April, 1937.
●●●1968-The computer mouse was first shown in public.

As a graduate student, Douglas Engelbart began to imagine ways in which all sorts of information
could be on screens.
In 1964, Douglas Engelbart made the first computermouse. The computer mouse had a wooden
shell with two metal wheels.
In 1968, the first computer mouse appeared in public. It was named "mouse" because a tail came
out at the end. In later years, the computer mouse became more and more important.
Douglas Engelbart changed the way that computers worked.
Now computer mice are becoming increasingly useful. And there are many different shapes of
computer mice in the world.

Halloween is a strange holiday. It started several centuries ago in Europe. It began as "Hallow
Evening" which means "holy night". At that time November 1st was called "All Saints' Day" (万生日)
and people honored all the saints who did not have their own special day. People believed that all the
spirits of dead people were active on the night of October 31st. So people would play all sorts of tricks
  on each other.
Black is one of the traditional Halloween colors, probably because Halloween festivals and traditions
took place at night. Pumpkins are a symbol of Halloween, so orange has become the other traditional
Halloween color. Making lanterns out of pumpkins is a Halloween custom.
Halloween is great fun for children. They dress up as ghosts (鬼) or witches (女巫). Small children
go "Trick - or- Treating". They wear costumes, knock on doors, and shout, " Trick or Treat!" People
almost always choose to give them candy as a treat, instead of choosing to receive a trick from the
children. Adults sometimes "trick or treat" their friends, too. Usually the "treat" is a glass of" wine or
  some small gifts.

Long ago, people lived on wild animals, fruits and other plants and they didn’t need to use money.
As time passed, families had more products(产品) than they needed, such as animals and crops. So
they needed to trade(交易) with others. They began to use money to make it easier. However, it was not
like the money we use today. They used shells, rice, salt or large stones.
During the 600s BC, people began using coins as money. Because they were easier to carry than
goods(货物), countries began to make coins as their money
The Chinese were the first to use paper money, probably in the 11th century. An Italian traveler, Marco Polo, saw the Chinese use paper money when he visited China in the 1200s. After his travel, he told the
western people what he saw. But European countries didn’t start using paper money till the1600s.
Today we have many ways to pay for things, such as coins, paper money and cards. Some prefer to
pay by card. That’s because paying with a card is easier and safer than carrying around a lot of “real”
money.
