Is the world too crowded? Well, that's a hard question to answer. It's all a matter of perspective(视角).In Montana, you might drive for a mile in any direction and not see another human being. In Macao, about 20,000 people live in every square kilometer!

What is true is that the world's population doesn't stay the same. It has been increasing at a very fast rate. That's in part because in each generation(代)there are more people who then have children than those in the last generation.

Five hundred years ago,the population of the world was about 460 million. In 1900, the world's population was under2 billion. Right now it is doubling every 40 years. That means, if this rate of growth continues, when you are a parent, there will be twice as many people on earth as there are now. Wow!Now there are already a lot of people. And soon the world's population will probably reach 7 billion. Some people worry about that! But there is a lot of disagreement about just how many people on earth equals(相当于)too many people. But everyone agrees that the more people there are, the more resources the world needs to feed them. So there is a need to think carefully about how we live and use the earth's resources.

Recycling is a way to change waste materials into new products, so that they can be used more than once.

Quite a lot of materials can be recycled, such as plastics, glass, paper, electronics(电子器件)and so on. There are many used items made of these materials in our everyday life, like soda cans, water bottles, newspapers, and old computers.

Recycling, in fact,is not a simple process and it is different for each type of material. For example, to start recycling paper, people will mix it with water and some chemicals to break it down. In this way, the paper will be turned into pulp(纸紫).Then the glues or plastics will be removed from the pulp. After that,it gets cleaned to remove any' inks or dyes(染料). Now the pulp is ready to be made into new paper.

However, computers and batteries are usually recycled in order to remove harmful chemicals as well as to find again some useful materials such as gold.

Do you know the recycling symbol? It has three arrows(箭头),which stand for three different steps in the recycling process. First, collect recyclable materials. Second, process the old materials and make new items. Third, buy items made from recycled materials.
