The telephone was invented in March. 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell ， a teacher who lived in Boston, Massachusetts. One day Bell and Watson, a worker, were in different rooms working on their new invention. Bell said, " Come here. I want you." But Watson heard these words on the telephone in the other room.

Soon Bell started his own company, the Bell Telephone Company. Other small telephone companies were started in towns and cities all over the US.
