Mr.Ma, a famous mental doctor from Beijing once said at an important meeting, "Now many young
students can have problems with their minds. Some students become worried because they have to study
very hard. Others have trouble getting on well with people around them like their parents and classmates.
Parents and teachers should care more about this problem."
     Then Mr.Ma gave some examples. One patient, a middle school student from Xi'an was doing badly
in his lessons. He thought his teachers and friends often laughed at him, and he became so nervous and
worried that one night he left his homes without telling parents. Another student, a 14-year-old schoolgirl
from Shanghai, was very afraid of exams. While she was reading the exam paper, she couldn't think of
anything to write.
     A recent report from Jiefang Daily says about 18% of the young students in Shanghai have mental
problems. They often fell worried and very unhappy. Unluckily many of them won't go and ask for help.
Some think they will look stupid if they go to see a doctor. Others won't talk about their secrets. At the
end of the meeting, Mr.Ma offered some good ideas to young people.

     Young people and old people do not always agree with each other. They sometimes have different
ideas about living, working and playing. But in one program in New York State, adults and teenagers live
together in a friendly way.
     Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults are invited to join the program. They live together for
eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works for seven hours a day. They do so
not only to keep busy, but also to find meaning and happiness in work.
     Some teenagers work in the woods or on the farm near the village. Some of them learn to make things
like tables, chairs and something like that and to build houses. It is the adults who teach them to do those.
     There are a few free hours each day and weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the
teenagers learn to take photos or paint pictures, others sit around and talk, sing or dance. Each teenager
has his own way to spend his free time.
     When people live together,  rules are necessary. In this program the teenagers and the adults make the
rules together.If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. They talk about it and
ask,"What should we do about it?"

   Overseas Chinese youths, such as Chinese Americas, Chinese Canadians, and Chinese Australians
are growing up in two different kinds of culture’s. Sometimes they are confused about the culture of
the society and the Chinese cultural background of their family. "Which country is my motherland?"
"Where is my original hometown?" and "Who is my grand grandmother?" are some of the questions

     After the camp, Sam, a Chinese American, said that this time he came to Beijing to see the Great
Wall of China with his own eyes. The next time he comes, he wants to watch the    
     Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. A girl from Canada said that she learned very little from books
and her parents, but now she deeply experienced the culture. Most of them realized the links between
themselves and China at Root-Seeking Camp.    
     One said,"With only what my parents say, I can't feel proud of my Chinese origin, but now I not
only feel proud of my motherland but also love her. I will remember this root searching tour for ever. "
